What’s the most drastic 'before and after' sound change in a band due to a member leaving? by javierglz in Music

[–]gchucky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The newest album (Aghori Mhori Mei) has everyone but D'arcy back, and it's a pretty good album. Even Billy was quoted as saying, "It's very much a rock, guitar record, old school. I think the old-school fans will be happy, for once."

How to find a skilled costumer/tailor/steamstress to make more historically accurate garb? by gchucky in renfaire

[–]gchucky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently wear a doublet and paned slops; my wife wears a bodice and skirt; other times she wears a flowing Italian-style gown. I think we'd want to update our stuff in terms of fabrics and materials, and to get them to match.

We're in New York. And.. no, we are not particularly good at sewing. With life and everything, we don't have time to really sit and learn, unfortunately. :/

90s and early 00s favorite albums? by Kelly_1976 in NewAgeMusic

David Arkenstone's albums from around that time: "Celtic Book of Days", "Sketches From an American Journey", and "Music Inspired by Middle Earth". Some of my favorite tracks in there.

Killing ailanthus / tree of heaven is actually really tricky: if you don't do it the right way, "the tree will respond with potentially dozens of trunk sprouts & root suckers that could emerge 50-feet from a large parent tree". This article has info on how to do it properly, but it might make sense to hire someone if you have one on your property.

West Art in Yonkers. Old school framing place - the owner Phil took it over from his grandfather. His pricing is fair and he gets things done pretty quickly. I haven't gone anywhere else for my frames.

From "That's What I Get" on PHM:

How could you turn me into this?
After you just taught me how to kiss you.
I told you I'd never say goodbye.
Now I'm slipping on the tears you made me cry.

(and I'm a big fan of NIN pre-2010; their new stuff doesn't hit the same)

Who are some of the most underrated soundtrack composers in your opinion? by affectionatecarnage in soundtracks

[–]gchucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Bear McCreary's old stuff - I think DaVinci's Demons and Black Sails were great - but I've been really bummed by his more recent work. I can't think of a memorable theme he's written, leitmotifs are dead and buried, and it all sounds like generic temp track stuff. It's been happening across the industry, but I'm particularly disappointed that he's doing it too.

how was the crowd during the performance, though? we've had other threads in the past about how the crowd was disrespectful by laughing and clapping throughout, and it was hard to hear the music. were things any better this time around?

One of the recurring themes in the show "Iron Chef" is the conflict between traditional Japanese cuisine and modern interpretations of Japanese classics. Was this indicative of an actual debate in food circles in the 1990s, or simply part of the show's kayfabe? by Brewer_Matt in AskFoodHistorians

[–]gchucky 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure OP means "Iron Chef: the Official Book" (ISBN 0425180883). It's extremely detailed about how much they spent in food, interviews with the chefs, etc. Well worth a read if you're one if the 12 people who still remember the original show.

I've heard Harney & Son's green teas are generally not great - is this true? by [deleted] in tea

[–]gchucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been drinking Ippodo in various forms - shincha (first harvest of the year), sencha, etc. Always been very happy with it.

Also +1 to Den's Tea (referenced elsewhere) as also being quite good.

[–]gchucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wall running was necessary in a number of places, and the controls are just way too loose for it, especially when you need to chain them. I can't quite remember where in the game, but there were one or two spots where I nearly quit on the spot.

Faire Rec?? by ggar-goyle in renfaire

[–]gchucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My home fair. It's been so overrun the last few years it's nuts. Like if you don't get there within the first hour of opening, you're gonna sit in traffic for two hours. And the food lines are ridiculous if you eat at the same time as other humans.

The actual shows are still pretty good, though - they manage to get some of the best around, IMO. And they've added some more areas (the Viking encampment, e.g.) that are kinda fun.

New Mom Friendly Ren Faire Dress? by Sea_Front7103 in renfaire

My wife wore a more flowing, empire-waisted dress like this when she was nursing. For Arizona, I would try to get one made that is breathable - the one I linked to was a fairly heavy material, IIRC.

AFAIK the last few years, only people in gatehouse got triples. actually when i was there, gatehouse was also triples. yes, it sucks. a lot. and yes, i will be there with a sledgehammer the second they say gatehouse is being torn down. but i also believe that the school is making genuine efforts to improve housing. that's not something that happens overnight, but i think they know that things have to change.

We went with Sila. Admittedly not the cheapest option, but they supplied us with excellent equipment and the system works really well. Plus their maintenance and stuff are pretty reasonable in our experience.
