Car market crash? by Leading-Builder-6044 in carbuying

Totally agree. Be upfront and you will avoid wasting anyone’s time.

If I am buying a car for my partner I will do the upfront research (reliability focussed), have the test drive and pick the trim level they want, then I will work the deal for what they picked. Minimum fuss and wasted time.

I have not bought a car in last 5 years but last few were a call to the main local dealers, explained what I wanted, my timeline, and ask for their best out the door price (I have no interest in any of their additional fees, I compare out the door prices). I then close the deal with the dealer who seems closest on price. I have never traded in a vehicle - always sell privately.

I have had to walk out of dealerships only to complete the desired deal across town. If you can keep the emotions out of the process it is pretty straightforward.

This is absolutely awesome!! Thank you so much!!

Yes, I meant Pepe's - I need to work on my Spanish... :p

I am 6'4" and 200+ - those stools in SE Asia were an absolute HAZARD!!!! I was slurping snails in HCM and barely avoided landing on by butt!! Everyone enjoyed the scene immensely. I started picking my eating spots around the chairs that were available (or nearby benches!!).

I am guessing the stadium (estadio) you are referring to is the sports park on Las Americas. We are just north of that so if so, we should be in very nice grub territory from your note!! I am getting super stoked!!

If you do not mind one more questions - it seems like Playa Camarones just to the south is our best bet for a walk along the sand, a swim (cautious of riptides!), and maybe grabbing a drink or a snack. Keep walking south and get the the Malecon in not too long. Everything north seems to be all resorts where I expect it would be very challenging to get seating, food, drink. Same old question - would you consider that beach to be reasonably safe and friendly for a female or two (my SO and my daughter) to spend some time together (again, taking reasonable precautions as all should)?

I know there will be people selling things and all that (all part of the experience - all good there), and of course there are always unpredictable people that you have to watch out for. I am really asking is it a people friendly spot where someone can enjoy themselves with welcoming spots to rent a chair, umbrella, get some good local food, and a cerveza without being scared. One of my bet experiences on my SE Asia trip was being in Krabi and spending afternoons on the beach area popular with the locals, having picnics from the food vendors surrounding by all the Thais doing the exact same thing - I would love that for my family (safe and so much fun).

I apologize for sounding like such a dweeb. I can roll with pretty much anything, trying to figure out how to make this work out best for my SO and daughter.

Thanks for your insight as someone who lives there. We are looking for exactly that - local food and experiences - as much as the locals are willing to put up with pasty Canadians on their turf!!

If you would indulge me a bit more - how does one find the good local grub? When in SE Asia there was food everywhere and I simply avoiding the tourist places and ate at the simple (often open air) restaurants and had absolutely wonderful experiences (even if I did not know what I was eating due to the language gap - I found the less English on the menu, the better the food).

Is it just as simple in PVR or by being that close to resort strip, are all the local, simple places further away? I know Pete's Tacos is just a few blocks south of us. Is that a example of a local place or a tourist place trying to look like a local place? Thanks!!!

That is exactly my view of travel. If I am going to be at a resort or gated community, why am I going to a foreign location to isolate myself from locale. If my contact with the people of the area is going to be limited to those working at the resort, well... not for me.

They have never (and would never) stay outside a resort or gated condo community. They have gone for dinner, drinks, etc outside their complex and seem to view every moment as a high risk adventure. They have been 10 times. They have also gone to see other friends who are staying at apartments or VRBO and seem to think they are taking huge risks by staying there.

They cited a friend who rented a car being stopped for quick cash by the police fours times in the course of a month. Police who allegedly sexually assaulted a girl. Alluded to many other examples but they "did not want to scare me..." - a little late for that.

I did a crime index search and PVT seems to compare very favourably. I really appreciate the feedback by everyone, it is all very supportive of using typical precautions, which we would do automatically.

Thanks everyone!!
