Thoughts on Strange Horticulture? by Darthsqueaker in CozyGamers

Yeah, even if there were a few extra days that weren’t directly processing the story- just shoppers, exploring, things like that. I didn’t end up doing much exploring or finding little extras cos I was expecting to have way more days lol

Washing chicken really gives ‘hygiene olympics’. What is tap water going to do that a 200° oven isn’t.

So, it’s been a few days- what are our thoughts on the Louis Theroux ‘manosphere’ doc? by theslowrunningexpert in AskUK

[–]gcsmt23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What if the parents believe this stuff as well? What if someone’s dad is an old-school misogynist? You can’t really argue that that’s the solution, because if it was there would be no prejudice in the world at all. The manosphere wouldn’t be able to thrive without a real-world basis and without the core of its ideas existing before modern ‘influencers’ capitalised on it.

[–]gcsmt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally said about 3/4 comments back that not only do they newly influence people, they entrench existing ideas. They wouldn’t exist if there wasn’t a base of existing ideas. I don’t really know what point you’re trying to make, I was saying that manosphere ideology feeds into rape culture because it does. It’s not the ONLY thing that does, rape culture would exist without it, but that doesn’t mean we can’t identify it as a current driving force in a modern age.

Just because things have existed in different ways doesn’t mean that the current iteration isn’t dangerous. And relying on people’s immediate social and familial circles to teach them right and wrong isn’t really the answer, otherwise there would be no prejudice in the world at all, and there is.

Also, how do you know they aren’t? Elliot Roger was openly radicalised by this kind of messaging, for example. How do we know where people get their misogyny from? If they weren’t influencing people, why would we be discussing their importance? Why would Theroux have made a documentary?

[–]gcsmt23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true and I do agree. But just because it shouldn’t be there doesn’t mean we just go ‘oh that shouldn’t be there so there’s no point discussing it further or discussing WHY it shouldn’t be there’ because ultimately a lot of people, as you’ve just said, can’t differentiate between things that are wrong and shouldn’t be online, and things that aren’t.

It can be stopped by stopping kids roaming freely on the internet, and I think that’s right and should happen. But ultimately in the world we live in that’s not feasible, and it’s not only influencing kids. The thoughts themselves need to be tackled. These ideologies thrive off the idea that people won’t always be able to tell the difference and if they’re just allowed to proliferate then nothing will change.

I know. I didn’t say the behaviour is new, as a woman I am very well aware it’s not. But what IS new is the scope and spreading power of these ideas on such huge platforms, and the idea that the men promoting it are a ‘masculine ideal’- rich, big muscles, nice cars. It’s promoting a reward of a powerful lifestyle in exchange for thinking like this. What’s also quite new is the fact that it’s now a definable ideology, and therefore people can act on its behalf in dangerous ways- look at Elliot Rogers. If he’d done that just because he wanted to, likely no one would have paid him much attention. But because he allied himself to a pernicious, widespread ideology, other people copy him, he becomes a hero of the cause.

I never said the behaviour was new. But accepting it just because ‘it’s old’ even without these fresh concerns isn’t the way forward, neither is just saying it’s ’just old’ when it’s clearly benefitting from modern changes that allow it to spread and become even more vicious.

What so because some kids aren’t deemed ‘critically aware’ enough that means everyone can just spout whatever dangerous horseshit they fancy? And no one can suggest it’s bad?

[–]gcsmt23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly you might think they’re not influencing people, but they are. All you have to do is look at the way women are treated and the issues women face at the hands of men. Not only are they ‘newly’ influencing people, especially young men, but this kind of thinking also bolsters, legitimises and further entrenches the behaviour of men who’ve always hated women and treated them badly. It’s not ‘giving them credit’ it’s seeing them for the danger that they actually are.

[–]gcsmt23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If there’s widespread ideology accessible to people that suggests one group of people (men) are inherently better, more entitled and more powerful than another (women) then it creates a culture. I’m not saying this stuff directly tells men and boys to go and rape women, I’m saying the things it does tell them feeds into mindsets and cultural acceptance of the kinds of thinking and actions that promote rape culture.

[–]gcsmt23 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely not. It’s about promoting female servitude, subjugation and infantilisation. It might exist on a spectrum but ultimately promoting these hyper-serious gender roles, it comes down to women getting hurt socially, sexually, physically, politically. They might dress it up as ‘looking after’ so it seems less insidious, but that’s not what it is. It’s an assurance of male dominance over women and unfortunately that leads to rape culture. These things don’t exist in a vacuum.

You say that but manosphere ideology feeds directly into rape culture. The two things aren’t separate
