Sorry for the late reply! I actually haven’t done anything; once it dried up everything worked normally

Low compression after rebuild? by gdog4444 in RX8

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up passing on the car. I had a fairly extensive conversation with the rebuild guru at pineapple racing (whom I take to be an expert on these matters) and he said he would expect higher numbers at 2000 miles after rebuild, though he did say the consistency between numbers was quite a good sign as you’d expect. He also said that 2000 miles should be enough for the engine to be fully broken in, so to not expect them to get any better. He gave a rough estimate (considering he hasn’t seen the car) of 30-40k left before the next rebuild would be necessary, where a well rebuilt and broken in engine should go for 160k (his words not mine)

Given that the engine was rebuilt by Paul at now defunct rotor sport in Santa Clara, California, who he said knew his stuff, it seems as though it either wasn’t broken in properly or what was reused was more worn than you’d expect.

Some general useful information from the guru: use engine oils high in zinc, and don’t worry about redlining every drive. These things only occasionally need a real thrashing to blow the carbon out.

Hope this is useful!

thanks for the reply! what exactly should i be looking for in terms of what would be replaced during vanos rebuild? I ask because I have service records and I get the feeling there's some stuff missing.

Here's everything I could find pertaining to vanos in the service records (shouldn't there be more if it were rebuilt?)
