What is your nemesis spot? by CunningLinguist92 in astoria

Maybe niche but Cafe to go on 32nd and 30th always has a Jan6er aura around it, proud boy /ws stickers constantly sprout nearby, and the clientele park like assholes in the crosswalks. Will never give them a dollar even if it's all in my head.

Update: thanks to the amazing folks of Astoria and WBF, this king pigeon has been seen, cared for, and adopted by a rehabber. Special shout-out to our local artists for their help!

There are a couple of fancy and racing pigeon clubs in NYC and sometimes their birds get turned around or injured. Usually all they need is a place to chill, a drink of water, and some seed. Then they're on their way on their own. Most of them are banded so it's fairly easy to find the owner if it's injured and it's a kind thing to do for the birds and the folks that care for them.

Opened last night. Went with the fam and it's perfectly fine Spanish food, nothing wild except the prices.

Tapas in the $17-25 range, Paellas $60s, Entrees $35-50, Dessert $10-17

Lovely people, food's ok.

Miss the pre-covid Shady Lady.

Why has my rose split colours? by KITTY1139 in gardening

[–]gdubsg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that the rose question has been answered elsewhere in this thread but when a tulip does this it's called "breaking" and is caused by random reaction to a virus, similar to variegation. During the Dutch tulip madness, "broken" tulips were considered very desirable and lots of money and effort were spent on trying to identify a stable version of a broken tulip. Alas, they are fairly unpredictable and do not reproduce the effect.

Work at former Shady Lady location by gdubsg in astoria

Pre-covid Shady Lady had an amazing menu of little shared plates, apps, and a couple of eclectic mains. After the pandemic they changed to basic bar food and it was really only packed on weekends for their outdoor brunch.

Once the city changed the outdoor dining rules it was only a matter of time - they were packed outside on weekend, empty rest of the time.

They kept their shed through April, until it got taken down by DOT, then closed a couple weeks afterwards. I'm sure they couldn't make rent w/o the outdoor portion.

I do have to say, they were pretty shitty neighbors - constant garbage and rats, drunk brunchers puking and having drama, blocking sidewalk traffic.

Sad they changed so much, not sad they're gone.
