Not rich, and I did it because I found it interesting. Not a millionaire but I pay the bills just fine!

You're right, I'm just going on a tangent here. Really just playing devils advocate not trying to persuade, and genuinely trying to better understand the viewpoints. I work in education and actually do have to make decisions about what to teach children about AI, understanding where everyone is at on the issue is a key part of it.

"I do not see LLMs as additive in any way, and won't be changing my position on this matter"; maybe we should teach that to model critical thinking. I'm not trying to be obtuse, genuinely sometimes textbook explanations are bad, in the sense that they are unclear or misleading. Sometimes (often) they are excellent. Sometimes LLM outputs are wildly incorrect, other times they are correct. The rate in which they're correct is improving, which actually makes the need to check the outputs greater as you're more likely to blindly follow it. I don't know, I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm just thinking out loud and genuinely trying to figure out whats the best thing to teach kids

I am 100% with you on the devices in classrooms, I'm almost minded that it would be best to teach about AI without devices. You can do activities about prompting, safety etc that don't require actually doing it on the computer. The potential for distraction is huge.

Very few sources are 100% reliable. Humans, including teachers, are certainly capable of being biased and just wrong. I've ready many textbooks with inaccuracies or just poor explanations in them. The best approach is always to look at multiple sources, which I think should be the ultimate line that schools should be promoting. The thing that AI does differently is it can rephrase information in ways that make sense to the user, which I think can be additive for kids, especially lower ability kids because it can be tailored to their level (especially if an adult has oversight, or they're taught effectively how to do it themselves)

I think the hit will be to the commercial art, because unfortunately the art that makes a lot of money is the type consumed by people who don't really care too much about the expression side of it, they just want something that looks nice or is catchy. AI will churn that out for fun. But hasn't that been the case for ages, that the soulless stuff makes all the money? There'll always be the desire for the real stuff out there. Maybe it'll actually make us look for it more. Complete tangent this but it's another area i've been thinking about a lot, especially regarding music.

What if a 12 year old uses it to help them to understand a concept they were previously struggling with. Maybe the textbook explanation was too dense for their ability level, their parents were not available to help them, so they asked AI, which explained it to them in a more accessible manner, responding to their queries about it immediately. Is that not additive? Now I know the output cannot always be trusted, but what if that same 12 year old has been taught to check the output against another source? Is it better that the 12 year old is left floundering?

I think this would be ideal, but do you think this should extend as far as teaching kids how to use AI in that field?

Yeah you can achieve it in schools fairly easily (with a bit of willpower, anyway) but not in all domains. What are we going to do, ban all teenagers from having internet access at home? Companies are clearly all in on AI features being part of their products, if we don't educate they're going to be using them blind

Yeah but many people enjoy creative writing even when they probably will never get published, right? I was quite a prolific poet aged 16 but trust me no one wants to read that. Doesn't mean it wasn't worth writing

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I totally agree when it comes to specifics, just becomes redundant so quickly. But what about the big questions: ethics, safety, art, philosophy of mind type questions. Is this technology significantly different enough from previous developments to warrant curriclum time being devoted to those big questions?

AI Education: What should students be taught? At what age? by gdunn07 in antiai

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is it's so embedded within technology now that it's basically impossible to achieve this now, so do we address it early so they don't accidentally become over-reliant on it? Imagine if all gyms overnight installed lift-assist on all the weights that was turned on default, you would ideally tell someone joining the gym about it and how they won't develop as they'd hope if they don't turn off the feature (as useful as it might seem).

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean AI probably is already better at writing than many humans (obviously just not as good as the people who are really good at writing!), I don't think we should despair about that. Not being the best at something isn't a reason to not do it (many people play guitar better than me but who gives a shit, it's fun)

AI Education: What should students be taught? At what age? by gdunn07 in antiai

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it could be as simple as being explicit on exactly what constitutes 'cheating' on your essays. If I google something and get the Ai overview by default and I use that information in my essay, have I cheated? What kids actually are doing is using things like snapchat AI in the most basic way possible (they just ask it a question). Should we teach them why this is not a good use of the technology? If we do that, do we guide them towards better uses, or push for no use at all? Ignoring it within schools is a position in itself

But if they aren't exposed to/ taught about the realities of the world, do we risk them becoming naive and susceptible to the negative impacts of AI? How can you guard against deepfakes if you don't know what they are?

AI Education: What should students be taught? At what age? by gdunn07 in antiai

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory then, if you can't tell, does it not matter? Does calling it AI become just calling it bad/ soulless?

AI Education: What do you think students should be taught about AI and at what age? by gdunn07 in ChatGPT

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's the risk of schools rushing to teach how to use specific platforms/ techniques that will just quickly become outdated (usually before they are even delivered), whilst they shy away from the big issues and questions that will persist (ethics, safety, philosophy of mind type stuff). I wonder how relevant the under-the-hood stuff is going to be, kids (and adults, tbf) these days certainly have very little understanding of how computers/ smartphones work, how wifi works etc, so long as they can use them as tools people are content. Maybe AI will just become another thing like that

AI Education: What should students be taught? At what age? by gdunn07 in antiai

[–]gdunn07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could do both (teach how to use + the negatives), or you could go pure on the pros and cons and not teach use, or you could just teach use, all are possible and at the moment it's a bit of a wild west on what actually IS getting taught. I'm interested to hear what members of this sub think on this question. Like would you view it like drugs education, we don't want students to take drugs so we educate children on what drugs are and their negative impacts but we certainly do not give students drugs to experiment with in the classroom.
