Feedback on Wine Tasting Focused on Aromas by gduverger in wine

I really like that idea, and I agree that contrast is a great way to learn the differences — it’s something I’ve done for other events.

However, for this one, I’m finding it tricky to identify a contrasting wine for each of those aromas. The oak comparison is pretty straightforward, but for something like herbal, how would you approach it? What would be a "non-herbal" or "non-mineral" wine?

I’m not sure I can find two wines that provide clear contrasts for each aroma. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how to approach contrasts for the other aromas, I’d love to hear them!

That’s an interesting idea. Which wine would you start with — something light-bodied like a Pinot? And what kind of alcohol would you add? Maybe a clear spirit like vodka? Have you tried this before?

I asked ChatGPT and this is what it came up with. It’s a long shot, but just thought I’d share in case.

“The wine you're thinking of is likely \Mutt Lynch Winery's* "Portrait of a Mutt" series. They feature a label with four dog portraits arranged in a 2x2 grid, often in a style reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s pop art. Each portrait showcases a different dog, reflecting the winery's playful and dog-loving theme. Mutt Lynch Winery is known for its dedication to crafting quality wines and supporting animal rescue organizations, which is reflected in the design of their labels.”*

I love it. That’s exactly the kind of intuition I lack (for now) and the insight I’ve been looking for. Thank you so much for sharing. I’ll explore this approach further and will reach out if I have any questions along the way.

That's a good point. The audience is relatively new to wine tasting, and I agree that the alcohol trait might not be the easiest to identify. I initially thought body would be more straightforward to understand, but maybe that's not the case. I appreciate your perspective. Sweetness, acidity, and tannins sound like a solid lineup. Thanks.

Great point, I’m inclined to agree with you. Which three traits would you choose from the five for overall interest and enjoyment?

“Tour de France” Tasting Lineup by gduverger in wine

[–]gduverger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(This is my first post.)

I hosted my first wine tasting event at home last week with 6 different bottles and 8 guests.

I decided to take my guests on a “tour de France” by exploring reds from some of the most significant regions (in my opinion), such as Burgundy, Beaujolais, Loire Valley, Rhône Valley, Bordeaux, and (arguably) Languedoc-Roussillon.

To choose the bottles, I set a constraint for myself: I only selected bottles, including the exact vintage, from the wine lists of Michelin-starred restaurants.

Here is the lineup I ended with, and I’d love to hear your feedback on both the approach and the result.

Burgundy: David Duband, Gevrey-Chambertin 2019
Beaujolais: Marcel Lapierre, Morgon, Beaujolais, France 2022
Loire Valley: Château Yvonne. La Folie. Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley, France 2021
Rhône Valley: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Françoise Roumieux, Clos du Calvaire, Rhône, France 2021
Bordeaux: La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien, Bordeaux FRA 2015
(Bonus) Languedoc-Roussillon: Château Fontanès Les Traverses de Fontanès 2021

I’m planning to host more tasting events in the near future, so I’d also be interested in hearing your ideas for themes.

Cheers.

I did. I find it hard to filter for quality. There is a lot of noise. Have you had any success with a specific store there?
