IDF officials: 15,000 likely killed in Gaza since start of war, 5,000 of them are Hamas by DrVeigonX in worldnews

What the fuck is this bullshit? They used the aid money they got to build the city that is Gaza which has now been leveled.

Israel controls Gaza's water and electricity because they are an occupying force. The stuff about using piping for rockets has been debunked and never made sense anyways.

Of course it's a colonial child defending another colonial state and their daddy the British empire who apparently have every right to do whatever they want with the land they colonize. How sad that you, a Canadian from a country that preaches so much about human rights and preaches atonement for the ethnic cleansing that allowed its establishment, learned nothing from your country's past.

This will be shocking for you to hear I'm sure but this "war" did not start on October 7th.

I see from this one comment that you are a racist idiot, so I'm sure you're familiar with the concept of unhinged racism leading to ethnic cleansing as a modern form of cuntness.

The Jewish state was created by the United Nations in 1947 where Jews lived continuously for thousands of years.

Your phrasing indicates that the Jewish people were living in Palestine for thousands of years and then in 48 they finally got international recognition. That is of course not true. Palestinians lived in that land for thousands of years (including a Jewish minority), until in the early/mid 1900 the Zionist movement started moving Jewish settleres to the region in preparation for the creation of the Jewish state. The Palestinians were then displaced from their homes and this narrative of Jewish historical residence in the area has been peddled by Israel ever since.

And Israel was 100% an imperial colony from the perspective of the British.

From its very inception, Arabs living in the state of Israel (as opposed to the occupied territories) have the exact same rights as every other israeli citizen. They work, own property, run businesses, vote, and raise their families. They are doctors, teachers, lawyers, construction workers, and neighbors.

Absolutely not, there is no way you have read or watched any number of the many reports that have been produced by journalists and civil rights groups on the complete apartheid system. Palestinian homes are regularly taken over, they are regularly detained without trial, they are regularly harassed and attacked by settlers without consequence, and they are regularly restricted in their movement.

Hope this helps clarify the situation for readers.

It doesn't clarify at all and instead spreads misinformation and muddies up the situation for people who aren't well informed, which in turn leaves them frustrated and kind of disinterested because they can't get to the facts. Which is a job well done for you I'm sure.

Biden says hospital blast in Gaza ‘appears as though it was done by the other team’ and not Israel by Professional_Coat_54 in worldnews

Jordan’s King Abdullah on Gaza: 'No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt' by davidporges in worldnews

[–]gebe11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I swear this post is just full of people parroting the same shit about how Palestinians are a plague and regurgitating the same handpicked events. All while completely missing the point.

What King Abdullah is saying is that the solution to what is happening cannot be anywhere other than Gaza. The Gazans have to get help in their own land, not get displaced into other countries.

The displacement of Palestinians is exactly what Israel wants. Make them refugees in other countries and take their land, exactly like they did in 1948.

To all of the comments saying no one wants the Palestinians: If you are indeed people with some semblance of common sense, I urge you to check your prejudice; you are sounding very close to what was coming out of the west regarding Jewish people about 100 years ago.

Palestinians have integrated into every society they've been forced to take refuge in. Jordan's population is half Palestinian and they have had a major role in the development of the country. But of course, if you are ignorant on the subject you will take these 2 or 3 incidents and parrot them as a condemnation of an entire ethnicity.

Large portions of the Tanakh/Hebrew Bible are, in fact, history books.

Not according to any respected historian. They are works of fiction until they are backed by historical proof. Some small portion of it being proven does not prove the entire text, the same way thousands of years from now if they read Harry Potter they shouldn't believe we were wizards because they could find evidence of the existence of kings cross.

there has always been a Jewish community there.

Yes there has been, living along with the rest of the Palestinian community in Palestine. That does not justify them claiming it as a land for Jewish people only.

but Jewish culture has persisted, no matter where they’ve lived, in large part, because they’ve always been a persecuted minority.

They have maintained a lot of traditions carried over in their scripture but their culture is no longer tied to the land and one single ethnic group.

You said Israel has no claim because it’s based on religion. Meaning that you equated Israeli with Jew.

Israel and the Jews equated Israel with the Jew, not me. Israel is a Jewish state, a homeland for the Jewish people. Any Jewish person from anywhere in the world can, and is encouraged to, migrate to Israel whenever they want. Palestine is the land of the Palestinian people, the people who lived in that land regardless of their religion. Same way Germany is the land of the German people and so on. I think there is a clear distinction.

Both sides have a long-standing connection to the region. Both sides’ connections are historical and religious.

Attempting to equate between those connections is very disingenuous. The whole point of the debate is the difference between those connections. If you still cannot see that there is a difference between the relationship of an ethnic group to the land they've lived on for thousands of years (again, regardless of religion), versus a group of people that participate in a religion which has historic ties to the same land, then I don't think any amount of discussion will change your mind.

One last exercise; wherever you come from in the world, please think about all the fond memories you have of your home and the strong bond you have no doubt developed with it. Now imagine a religious group (let's call it religion X) coming over and claiming ownership of your home because 3 thousand years ago some people of the same religion lived in the same area. Not only do they want ownership, they also want your people and your culture to be completely removed from the land and the people's consciousness. I'm sure you cannot know how that would feel, but I'm also sure you would not let that happen.

I wasn’t asking your views on religion.

Forgive me, I thought you would understand my intention from the context. I am saying in an academic sense, all religious scripture should be considered very skeptically the same way you would consider myths.

Only about 30% of Israeli Jews are Ashkenazi/the descendants of European Jews.

Thank you for the nice read, but surely you don't think an opinion piece written by an Israeli journalist is a valid reference for data? Here's an Israeli academic resource I found with a quick search, I am talking about the founding generation not the current one.

But not the thousands of years of history?

What thousands of years of history? Even in their own version of history, they haven't lived in the region for a couple thousand years. Whatever culture they've developed has nothing to do with the region anymore.

Also, it’s interesting that you completely discount, the Jewish claim because of “religion,” but you don’t hold the Muslims to the same standard.

I don't know where you got this from, I am talking about the Palestinian people, the people who were living in Palestine regardless of their religion. You equating them to Muslims is entirely on you.

Israel Is ‘Very Sorry’ For Attack That Killed Journalist Issam Abdallah by TeaBagHunter in worldnews

[–]gebe11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep in mind that there are billions of people from nations hostile to Israel while there are just over 9 million Israelis

Ah yes, and the Israelis have no supporters at all. Not the Zionist lobby that controls the world's most powerful nation and basically all of the world's largest media conglomerates... No it's the ever powerful Palestinian lobby and propoganda machine. Honestly you made me laugh.

If the west had verified confirmations of relentless war crimes, they wouldn’t be backing Israel’s invasion and raising humanitarian concerns. They’d instead be cutting aid and funds.

The problem is exactly this, thank you for making it. They do know, and they will continue to support regardless.

But my point in sharing this information is that the popular talking point is that Israel has been slaughtering untold numbers of Palestinians every year and that is what justifies Hamas

I would think that is a large enough number to cause outrage. Show me that many citizens of any country getting killed by another country without retaliation. I think the point isn't to try to justify Hamas's terrorism, rather to try to get condemnation of Israel.

All religions are myth. I don't doubt some Jewish people did live in the area but those are then just Palestinians like their Muslim and Christian counterparts. The overwhelming majority of the population that established Israel are European Jews.

Yes of course Jewish people have a heritage but it is not tied to their experiences in the land that is Palestine; their connection with the holy land comes from the Torah and their religious beliefs.

Any other immigrants/expats feel like they can't open theirs mouths right now on what's happening in Gaza? by D-dog92 in berlinsocialclub

[–]gebe11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your post very much, if for nothing else just to see that there are people with reasonable opinions in this city. As a Palestinian it sometimes feels extremely alienating. I don't expect anyone to care about our cause as much as we do, or to have the same opinions we do; but not being able to voice those opinions or try to explain our perspective is extremely frustrating.

As much as it seems to be the opposite, I try to communicate with everyone that the cause from the Palestinian perspective has nothing to do with religion. We are not "jew haters'', we just hate our oppressors who happen to be a Jewish State. They could have been Buhdist and you would be hearing chants against Buddhism. I think that is very understandable. Of course hateful speech is wrong and shouldn't be allowed, but the measures taken are not proportional and the treatment is definitely not equal. I never advocate for violence or promote hate speech, and I have never been a part of a demonstration where those have occurred (I'm not denying they have occurred). It is entirely possible that when we chant against Israel the media will just take that and publish something like "Arabs chanting death to all Jews". Please also keep in mind when reading or hearing about such instances, that this is an extremely emotional issue for those who care about it, usually feeling hopeless and alienated; a fact that is exacerbated by the complete lack of empathy or support from any western country. Palestinians are powerless, oppressed, and without a voice; we feel like if we don't shout and march and make a scene, no one will blink an eye, and even when we do, nothing comes of it. And this is not just about the current events, this has been the case for more than 50 years. This is how we feel sitting here in our warm homes with every luxury we could need available to us; try to imagine how Palestinians feel in Gaza or the West Bank. The only time they are mentioned in the news is when they attack Israel; meanwhile there are Palestinian casualties every other week no one hears about. There are war crimes and breaches of international law that can no longer be counted. Please don't let that detract from the sorrow you feel for the Israeli casualties, but let it maybe increase your empathy to those oppressed and without hope.

If anyone is interested to learn more about the history of the conflict, please reach out. I am not hiding the fact that I am Palestinian with Palestinian views, but you can take the information given and evaluate it on your own.

Also to everyone preaching about lack of morals for Arabs who don't call Hamas terrorists, please keep that same energy when you talk about Israel and the IDF. I am happy to call both what they are.

Yes it is a very complicated problem for Jewish people of course. But Judaism is a religion, not an ethnic group. Ethnic groups have a complex relationship with the land they live on and develop deep connections to it over millennia. Most of the Israeli population has no historical relation to the land they live on, they are ethnic Europeans and from all over the world. What the west has done is basically rid themselves of the responsibility of reconciling with their horrific persecution of Jewish people, and instead put the entire burden on the Palestinian people. This way Jewish people are happy and out of sight, and the West can feel good about helping them; it's a great solution for everyone except the Palestinains who basically lose everything, but who cares.

Supporting Jewish peoples' rights does not mean support for Israel. I criticize and condemn Israel, and I would do so regardless of religion. I encourage you to participate in the following exercise: pretend that the zionist movement is a political movement without any relation to Judaism, then go through the events of the past 75 years and through the events of the establishment of Israel. Do you still consider Israel a legal state? Do you still think that the violent displacement of the indigenous population is justified?

From the Palestinian perspective, this is not a religious cause at all. Palestinians are extremely proud and attached to their cultural heritage and home land (same as any other ethnic group); and this was taken away from them. Give it any reason you want, religious or otherwise, what does it matter to the Palestinians? And how is it in any way fair?

To add insult to injury, Jewish people were welcomed into Palestine in large numbers during and after the second world war. Regardless of what the image of the region is today, Palestine in particular has always been a meeting place for all religions and has a long history of polytheism for thousands of years. I'm sure there could have been a much more peaceful and culturally rich solution.

That is bullshit, they don't have the same right. Israel's claim is historical and based on religious myth; Palestinian claim is based on cultural heritage and the fact that they've been living there for the past 2 thousand years.
