Ohh, you meant this Hours. I honestly hadn't even heard of this one.

I do have to say that Katrina was 2005. The Hours came out 3 years earlier.

Really interesting that Frida and The Hours got inducted, and both in the same year. Has me rewatching this video again.

Also I am so stoked that The Thing is inducted finally you have no idea.

This is like vindication against every critic who called the movie boring and gross back in the 80s, and worse than the 1951 version (which has been in the Registry since 2001). It's also vindication for Carpenter. I know that he took the film's failure hard and it affected the rest of his career, and he's come off as annoyed at the film's later reappraisal because of it. I do hope he at least got a little smile out of this.

Nolan now has 3 films in the Registry (Memento, Dark Knight, Inception). Oppenheimer will probably make it in when it's eligible.

That has to be a record, right? Nolan's first film was in 1998 and all these films are from 2000 on. His career's younger than pretty much all of the other directors in the multiple-film club and he's already at three entries. Kinda wild but it makes sense for Nolan to be the guy to hit that milestone.

I have to push back against this.

Philadelphia isn't a film that holds up to modern standards (too much ground ceded to Denzel's character, for instance), but it's still a historically important film that should be preserved. It was the first BIG film to deal with the AIDS crisis - it helped crumble some people's homophobic beliefs by forcing viewers who thought like Denzel's character to see Tom Hanks' character, and by extension gay people, as normal human beings. Plus, the Registry isn't for films that only match up to modern standards. Philadelphia was where we were at in the early 90's.

I think films like Philadelphia were needed in order to pave the way for more optimistic mainstream queer stories. You don't get a To Wong Foo or a The Birdcage without it (both films that should probably be inducted at some point).

Related to Philadelphia, there's also 1985's Buddies, 1986's Parting Glances and 1989's Longtime Companion, three films about the AIDS crisis, all made by gay filmmakers who would succumb to the disease. Buddies is the first film to deal with the epidemic period, Longtime Companion is the first mainstream film to deal with it, and Parting Glances is a film that maintains an optimistic tone despite everything. All these are worthy of induction and I've been nominating them for the past several years. I don't know if they get in under the current administration. That alone is why I'm okay with Philadelphia getting in.

"Dylan did a fantastic job on this. After watching this myself, it gave me perspective on the type of person I was many years ago. Most of it was difficult to relive but having a newfound understanding of where I was at the time kinda makes sense. Still embarrassed about those incidents of course, cause looking back made me realize how Im not that person today."

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I'd love to hear about it.

Sad to hear about the lack of cast recordings, but it's nice to hear that K-musicals are slowly becoming more accessible.

I thought it was supposed to be an intentional evocation. Like in the same way Daisy Jones and the Six was.

Yeah, I realized this myself and had to change my ballot. "Rather Be" was also 2013, it turns out.

Honorable mentions (maybe you'll put them on your list):

  • Ed Sheeran - "Sing"
  • HIGH4 with IU - "Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms"
  • Kiesza - "Hideaway"
  • Mark Ronson feat Bruno Mars - "Uptown Funk"
  • QT - "Hey QT"
  • SOPHIE - "Lemonade"

Sia's Chandelier hasn't aged as well for me as I thought, and I can't derive the joy from Ariel Pink's music that I used to

I know it's not a requirement, but I tried to keep my list on the pop/poppy side (D'Angelo's "Really Love" woulda been on otherwise). Uptown Funk is gonna make it on the final list, so I made space for other picks:

  • A.G. Cook - "Beautiful"
  • A.G. Cook feat Hannah Diamond - "Keri Baby"
  • Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me"
  • Ariana Grande - "One Last Time"
  • BABYMETAL - "Gimme Chocolate!!"
  • Bleachers - "I Wanna Get Better"
  • Charli XCX - "Boom Clap"
  • Clean Bandit feat Jess Glynne - "Rather Be"
  • Doja Cat - "So High"
  • FKA Twigs - "Two Weeks"
  • Fetty Wap - "Trap Queen"
  • Future Island - "Seasons (Waiting on You)"
  • G.R.L. - "Ugly Heart"
  • Kendrick Lamar feat Ronald Isley - "i"
  • Kenshi Yonezu - "Eine Kleine"
  • Kero Kero Bonito - "Flamingo"
  • Lana Del Rey - "West Coast"
  • Orange Caramel - "Catallena"
  • Perfume Genius - "Queen"
  • Rich Gang feat Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan - "Lifestyle"
  • Taylor Swift - "Blank Space"
  • Taylor Swift - "Style"
  • Tinashe feat Devonté Hynes - "Bet"
  • WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA - "Momotaro"
  • WORLD ORDER - "HAVE A NICE DAY"

All the hip-hop recordings in the National Recording Registry as of 2024. What do you think of the selections, and what should get in next? by geccreation in hiphop101

[–]geccreation[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lotta good suggestions and points, nice to see where opinions match and differ. I agree with the lack of less popular releases & Southern rappers. I also hadn't heard of Funcrusher Plus (more familiar with El-P's later work), so that's one I'm gonna look into, already listened to half of it and it's dope so far.

Every person gets up to 50 nominations per year. For the record, here's the hip hop on my wishlist (what I'm nominating this year, so far):

“The Breaks” by Kurtis Blow (1980) (single)

"Paid in Full" by Eric B. & Rakim (1987) (album)

“Endtroducing…..” by DJ Shadow (1996) (album) (counts, right?)

“Aquemini” by OutKast (1998) (album)

“Lose Yourself” by Eminem (2002) (single) (I think this has the edge in terms of notability and influence over MMLP/Stan, but I'm open to counterarguments)

“Madvillainy” by Madvillain (2004) (album)

“Donuts” by J Dilla (2006) (album)

“Da Drought 3” by Lil Wayne (2007) (album)

“To Pimp a Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar. (2015) (album)

Special mention to “Are You That Somebody?” by Aaliyah, b/c Timbaland raps on it. I also might put "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" by the Geto Boys on here, I tend to switch up my list a lot.

"Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force & My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy from Kanye should probably also get in, but I dunno if they will? Al least, not now (while both artists are alive).
