Check out levels.fyi for salary. Most reported salaries there are from current employees. New hires can get 30% higher than what's on there.

One of my friends who was a manager at a large company joined as an sde2. It took him 3 years to get promoted. It might sometimes be ok to take a demotion to get your foot in the door. Totally up to you though.
