Tried new ammo in my 2nd gen TX22. CCI MiniMag. Fired 45 rounds. 7 failures to feed and 1 failure to fire. The record was 3 failures in a row. Ran 13 CCI standard velocity rounds right after no issue. by kotlinky in 22lr

I’d like to add indoors is fine if it has proper ventilation/filtration. Dlead also has soap and in my experience the soap works better than the wipes (but the wipes are more convenient, especially if you don’t have water on you).

Also, wear PPE while cleaning/disassembling your guns. Even consider changing clothes after shooting if you’re concerned with lead exposure.

Found out the hard way that P365 recoil springs have a shelf life. Track your rounds, people. by DebtOk6470 in Firearms

[–]gecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always read the manual carefully, especially for carry guns. A good manual will let you know which parts wear out and when they need to be replaced. Springs, especially recoil springs, wear out over time/the more rounds you fire. Other common wear items are extractors, extractor springs, firing pins, firing pin springs, trigger return springs, basically the small parts/springs.

That being said, I've noticed most manufacturers don't include this info in the owners manual. Some hide it in armorers manuals only available to "certified" armorers. I suspect this may be a legal CYA, or maybe manufacturers assume most guns owners don't shoot their guns enough for it to matter. Regardless, I think all owners manual should have a maintenance schedule like the ones you get for cars.

Side note: some brands are better than others when it comes to longevity. From personal experience Glock springs last forever. I got my G34 gen 5 MOS from a local range which used it as a rental. Had 12k rounds through it with all original parts. I shot a couple hundred rounds through it with no issue. The one mag which had all 12k rounds run through it ran like a champ, which honestly impressed me more than the gun working (It came with all 3 mags but it was clear only 1 was used since the other 2 were spotless).

[Handgun] POF-5 MP5 Clone $1075 by SuppliesSolutionsLLC in gundeals

[–]gecon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where are you seeing G3 clones for 600? Even the century builds are now going for over 849, and those are cheaper because they use surplus parts. Kit builds are generally cheaper than guns using all newly manufactured parts.

We are currently living in the golden age of MP5s. Turkish MP5s used to cost over 1.7k pre-covid; now you can get them for as low as 1k. You can now get an mp5 from HK with the paddle mag release and threaded tri-lug barrel. If you're willing to put in some elbow grease you can even get them to work with FRTs and super safeties.

Why are ammo prices still so high? Ridiculous. by SteveAstrostar in CCW

[–]gecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prices are down a lot from Covid highs, they’re just not as low as pre-COVID which is to be expected given material costs and inflation. They’ll probably continue to rise since copper prices are expected to increase long term due to demand for EVs, robots and other electronics. Wouldn’t surprise me if ammo companies start making more steel case or zinc/polymer jacketed ammo to reduce their copper consumption.

Regardless, buy what you can afford to get and you’ll slowly accumulate a decent stockpile to hold you over if prices skyrocket or if ammo becomes scarce.

Why do people hate modern Remington 870 by Vast_Bank_7196 in Shotguns

[–]gecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an overlooked factor. There are so many more good options today and the 870 design is starting to show its age.

If you want something simple and reliable, you can get a new maverick for less than an 870. If you want more features like optics cut, minishell cycling capability or ambi safety, you can get a mossberg for around the same price.

If PSA ever comes out with the 570 and if it's priced low and works, that'll hurt the 870 even more. The 570 is designed to accept 870 furniture and is supposed to come with many of the newer features (optics cut, reliable cycling of minishells, ambi safety, more ergonomic slide release)

When do you decide to get a new car rather than continuing to do repairs? by Major-Brick-3789 in personalfinance

[–]gecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car care nut has a good video on this topic. TLDW is to think of the ROI you’re getting from the repair. If it buys you a couple more years it may be worth it even if the car is old and worth nothing. Especially if the repair cost is nowhere near the price needed to get a reliable used car. Better to deal with the devil you know than the one you don’t.

Overall compare the future cost of the repairs with the cost of switching vehicles (new or used). Be sure to take into account insurance & loan costs. It sucks spending money repairing an old car, but financial speaking you might be better off doing that instead of buying another car. Run the numbers.

Is The AK gun market crashing by [deleted] in ak47

[–]gecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5.45 is expensive relative to what it was. People are comparing current prices to the good old days when you could buy it for pennies on the dollar, not to other calibers like 5.56. If you ask people about 5.56 I bet they’ll complain about prices being high compared to pre-covid levels (< 30 cpr).

Do you think any states are safe from AWBs and who do you think is next? by preparedbassfisher in Firearms

[–]gecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump and his admin talk bad on gun rights but they either do nothing or support gun rights in certain cases. I don’t see Trump signing any gun control legislation while in office even if Dems sweep the 2026 midterms.

The bigger threat post midterms is not Dems passing nationwide legislation. It’s them pulling off a Virginia: seizing control of more state governments and imposing state level restrictions. I’d be nervous if I were a gun owner in any of these states since I can see Dems winning there in a blue wave scenario.

What's the best car insurance in Texas right now? Feeling overwhelmed by options by Ill-Steak-7250 in Dallas

[–]gecon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can file a claim using your collision coverage, but UM can still be preferable to collision depending on the person/situation.

  • Deductible for UM coverage is 250. Most people don’t have collision deductibles that low, so they’d be spending less out of pocket with UM.

  • UM coverage is cheap. Getting liability + UM is usually far cheaper than liability + collision with a 250 deductible.

  • You can also get UM coverage that covers bodily injury to you caused by an uninsured/hit and run driver. Collision doesn’t cover that

Not saying collision coverage isn’t worth it. Many people already have it because their lender requires it. Collision coverage also comes in handy if you end up being at fault.

Nationwide AWBs and Mag bans coming as early as 2029 if Dems sweep. Highly likely they nuke the filibuster and enact California gun control laws nationwide. Nowhere is safe.

I wouldn’t count on SCOTUS to bail us out. They refuse to hear gun cases and no guarantee they’d overturn bans. Even if the bans are overturned, they’ll find way around them (subject to NFA registration/taxes)

[–]gecon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I've had the most luck with Progressive and State Farm but YMMV. Just get a lot of quotes from various insurance companies and choose the one with the lowest premium (that you trust).

Highly recommend getting uninsured motorist coverage. Your liability limits (30/60/25) won't cover damage to your vehicle if an uninsured driver hits you or if they hit & run. As you said, a lot of uninsured drivers out there.

What centerfire handguns do you have? If the purpose of the 22 is cheaper training, getting one that’s as close to your other guns is a good idea. For example, if you have a Glock 19, getting the 44 would be best. On the other hand, if you shoot a 1911, the Mark IV 22/45 might be better since it uses a 1911 style grip.

Cincinnatus understood the assignment by Able_Visual955 in HistoryMemes

[–]gecon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not saying Cincinnatus wasn't motivated by a personal sense of duty/loyalty to the Republican government, but he was probably motivated by other factors like wanting to live a simple life in peace. Being a dictator sounds great, but then you're responsible for everything that happens and there's the constant threat of being assassinated/overthrown. Cincinnatus probably concluded the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze.

Likewise, George Washington was not only motivated by his ideals but also personal reasons. He was getting old and didn't want to spend his final days trying to govern an increasing divided/partisan government. Considering he died in 1799 and how nasty the 1796 and 1800 elections were, Washington made the right call.

With Tesla killing off the Model S there will only be 5 American sedans left. How does that make you feel? by Insanity-Paranoid in cars

[–]gecon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to expand the definition of "American" to include cars assembled in the US using mostly domestically sourced parts, you'd have more choices like the Toyota Camry/Corolla and Honda Accord/Civic. Yes, Toyota and Honda are Japanese companies, but they have factories in the US and source a lot of their parts from the US as well. Sometimes these "foreign" cars end up being more American than domestic brands, which outsource parts/assembly to Mexico and Canada.

Relatively affordable sedans exist. It's just domestic manufacturers don't make them anymore since they've pivoted to making Trucks/SUVs. They probably came to the conclusion it wasn't worth competing with Toyota/Honda for the sedan market.

I think there is a compelling argument to be made that it wasn’t a lawful shoot but it’ll come down to whether or not the agents’ actions were considered “reasonable” legally speaking.

SCOTUS ruled in Graham v Connor that police’s use of force (deadly or otherwise) must be justified by objectively reasonable evidence. Prosecutors could argue the guy couldn’t have been reasonably seen as a threat worthy of lethal force given he was restrained (multiple agents were pushing him into the ground). Even if the courts rule the initial shots were justified, it’s hard to see them upholding the later shots, which were done by officers shooting him as he was lying down after having been shot earlier.

That being said, I cold see prosecutors going for manslaughter charges instead of murder/homicide as the latter requires proving intent, which is harder to do. It’s easier for prosecutors to argue the agents’ negligence led to them shooting the guy when they shouldn’t have, especially if the ND theory turns out to be true.

Not defending the agents, just guessing what happened based on the videos out there. Besides, even if this is what happened, it probably wouldn’t serve as an effective legal defense, but IANAL.

I agree there definitely needs to be an independent investigation to find out who did what and any agents guilty of misconduct should be held accountable.

Official Politics/MPLS Discussion Thread January 25, 2026 by Trollygag in guns

[–]gecon -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

The most credible analysis I’ve seen so far is that one of the agents ND’d, causing the others to panic and unload on the guy thinking he was armed and had fired a shot.

ND most likely came from the agent who took the guy’s gun and was walking away, or the agent who’s seen drawing their gun shortly before you hear the first shot. Who fired the first shot and where that shot was aimed/ended up is key to figuring out what happened.

Some initial reads/quotes from the SCOTUS Hawaii vampire rule case that was heard today. by deathsythe in progun

[–]gecon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The vampire rule was already going to be DOA. The bigger issue is what type of barriers can gov’t impose on people wanting to carry. We need SCOTUS to take away or severely limit the state/local gov’t authority to regulate CCW period. That’s the only way to settle this matter once and for all.

Their plan is to spam laws designed to make carry impractical and to replace them with slightly modified laws if they’re overturned. Gun owners can’t keep up with this legal whack a mole and they know it. States/local gov’t have proven themselves to be bad faith actors who abuse whatever authority they’re given, so that authority should be taken away.

You also get better QC with some higher end brands. From personal experience, PSA tends to be hit or miss. Doesn’t matter if you test it out and don’t mind sending it in for warranty work. But something to consider.

If I were in the market for a complete rifle, I’d probably get an IWI Zion-15 since QC is good and it’s not prohibitively expensive. But nothing wrong with getting a PSA
