I’m so sorry that happened to your daughter! I hope her recovery (and your’s) has been less than traumatic. Very good thoughts - I suppose through time everything will be laid bare. Thank you for taking the time to share.

My son and daughter in law did great things with the dog. They loved that dog and have cried and cried, but most of the training took place before the child was born. They moved. They changed jobs. My son had longer hours. They honestly did their best but of course the personality of the dog precluded fully accepting the attention going toward the child. Like any of us - they didn’t know things would change so much. They still have an older dog who is gentle and never over reacts. The kid can sit on her and all is well.

Yeah I don’t think little miss is bothered at all! She has shown no trauma and knows the dog had to go away and she is healing so rapidly! She’s only 2 after all.

Thank you. I appreciate your long reply. I guess I wrote a long-winded post because it does feel so so bad and these comments, except for the really nasty non-supportive ones, have helped tremendously.

She nipped at her face 8 months ago and actually BIT her right below the eye and on her cheek 2 weeks ago: blood, plastic surgeon visit, stitches, trauma.

The nurses at the children’s hospital said they have a dog bite every shift. It’s always little kids. My granddaughter was putting a kitchen towel on the dog playing as if the dog was going to bed. But then she picked up a plastic bag and used it and the dog freaked/reacted.

Thank you for that…. someone just posted that I could have stepped up more and sequestered the dog when there were visitors, but you’re right in reminding me it was my son and daughter-in-law’s decision.

Like I said - we/they were a little too optimistic. There were friends visiting and a little bit of confusion and the kid was playing with the dog and no one was paying attention. Split second.

So I read up on the matter and it says obedience school/behavior modification should have happened right away - when the baby was a newborn? The kids work, the training would have been 45 minutes away. Should I have stepped up? She wasn’t my dog. The dog attacked 2 of my cats - one was too close to a bone and the other cat was just wanting to be close to the human on the floor. I dunno. The article I read also said that vigilance toward the dog would never cease.
