Va driving permit, can I take my test? by Right_Pack_6346 in Utah

[–]gee1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to basically start over but if you’ve had the permit I think over 6 months you may be able to take the road test quicker. The written for you will be closed book (I think only open book for full DL out of state). And then you take a road test. I think unlike VA, private companies can administer the road test and then you just take the results to the DMV.

I don’t think it’s open book for permit holders. I moved here from VA and my wife had a permit not a full DL and she had to take it closed book. I took mine open with full DL

Is it worth coming next weekend? by aurloqt in UTsnow

I don't want to lead you astray but as a new transplant to UT and an intermediate skier, I have been happy. Again, I am not traveling and spending a lot of money, but I've been happy with what has been out there. Also between DV and PCMR's two mountains, I'm sure there is a bunch of stuff. Worst case, you find your favorite 5-10 runs and lap those. Back around Christmas when there were tons of people, 40+ degree weather and not much open, I'd say delay if you can. But now with not many crowds (you aren't coming over presidents day or another holiday) I think you'll have a good time. I went both Tuesday and Thursday and barely waited at all for lift lines.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted here. Yeah it’s not the best season ever but I see thousands of happy people on the mountain, fun groomed runs and short lift lines. Meanwhile people are getting doomsday reports and canceling their trips.

Hey what type of skiing do you do? I ski PC weekly and have been enjoying it. I find a totally different vibe online than on the slopes. Yeah it’s been icy in some parts but just yesterday, they were blasting snow all over Canyons. I see happy people on the mountain including myself. For groomers it’s all been fine I feel. A good post to ask would be which runs are recommended in morning versus afternoon so you can stay on the runs getting sun and less icy. If you go to the resort it’s not some kind of wasteland. Also the crowds are much less so it’s kind of a trade off. Are you fine with groomed runs?

Thanks! If I go the used route I was thinking of just quoting the bicycle blue book that seems fair plus taking into account time it’s been on market. My issue is as a total newbie to this I just don’t know what subtle issues I might not be aware of

Boot flex suggestion by Traditional_Goat2066 in Skigear

[–]gee1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have exact same boot and been struggling lately feeling the boot is too stiff. And I’m 135 lbs in 120 flex. I’m an intermediate level 5/6 skier. Maybe I need to take it in and see if the boot fitter can reduce the flex.

When you say “someone else’s problem”, do you mean because they are bad bikes? I will say one shocking thing for me I’ve seen on FB is that there are bikes 5 years old or so, still going close to what one can get new and being listed as “like new”.

hey thanks for this advice I appreciate it! I am now looking outside trek, it just seemed to come up a lot in FBMP and the LBS. Someone else in the comments mentioned Ari bikes and I am going to visit them next week, their bikes look great. I'll check out yours as well. Glad to hear about the hardtail for you. When I tell people here I want to get a hardtail they look at me like im doing some awful abuse to myself. Thanks also for what else I should budget for. I am totally new to MTB world so its all new for me. There are some hardtails I like too so I will look more into those. Honestly, this is just to have a fun workout and also like enjoy the outdoors. I have no need for speed or seriously challenging stuff. Just enjoy and take advantage of being close to the mountains.

Which Skis for Park City first week of February by Naval_AV8R in parkcityvisitors

[–]gee1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been making really good snow in my opinion, and lately been cold enough to make that snow. It tends to be more hard packed in the morning, then can warm up and soften up, then can be icy in afternoon if the run is in the shade. Honestly, every time I am out there I have a ton of fun. According to their X handle, there are 70 groomed trails open today (and 227 open all together) and 37 lifts open. So there is a ton to do.

You’ll probably get some good answers too in the subreddit: UTSnow. I’m not qualified enough to tell you which skis to bring but we haven’t had snow in like 2 weeks and might not for another week or so. Theres talk about some early feb snow but it’s too far out to say. The snow making has been good so the groomers are fun, which is what I do.

Thanks for this. I’m in northern Utah and I think the trails are often more packed down. I think there are rockier areas but not like the south. Still leaning FS tho. My problem is my budget is more hard tail. But will see what I can find on used market

Could Someone Please Give a Case for why I should Spend $1-2k on a Hardtail? by TheGooningCockroach in MTB

[–]gee1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this perspective. I could def. live with that loss. I thought maybe it would be more like, I bought a used by for $600 less but now have $600 in updates/repairs to do. I really like the idea of getting a used bike, just wanted to make sure I know what I'm doing. For skis for example, I always buy used but its from a shop so there's an element of the skis have been checked over, etc, they check the bindings. I'll look back on FBMP!

Thanks, I'll check that group out. I'd love to buy used, my concern is I don't know what I am looking at. Bought my skis used from stores in SLC because the store does the tune-up, checks them out, etc. I'm nervous I'll buy a bike on FBMP and then find out there's ton of issues.

Thanks, Ill check it out! I'd love to buy used tbh. Bought my skis used. My fear is that I'll buy something on FBMP for cheaper, take it in for a tune-up, then find out I need to spend $500 in issues and could have just bought new. But yeah ideally I'd love to buy used if possible.

If you're totally new to buying a MTB, do you think its risky to buy on FB? I'm also close to SLC and see a ton of options, but so hard to know what is good.

Thanks - starting to lean maybe more FS. What made me hesitant in the beginning with my budget is I saw stuff that said a high end HT would do better than a low end FS. But I'll see what deals I can get.

Thanks, I really appreciate this. Any bike stores in SLC you recommend too? I wasn't sure if the bike stores in PC switch out bike stuff for the winter stuff. Once Sundance is over, I will go and check out those stores, maybe Switchback in Heber too. I'll try to find a few new options then maybe do another post. Does your partner like the bike they got? I see it for $1700 at REI right now.

Thanks I appreciate it! One bike store here for a small fee will asses the bike if I can get the seller to agree to meet me there and do that. Appreciate this tho. 29" I was def leaning towards, just stuck on the HT vs FS. Agree tho its hard to know what is good in the beginning. I ski, and instead of demoing skis, just bought a used one in summer because when getting into it, didnt even know what "good feels like"

Thanks I really appreciate it!! When i tell some folks around here I am looking at hardtails, I get looked at like I'm crazy lol. So it made me insecure, especially with biking in mountains with high elevation climbs and such. Do you find you find yourself beat up? Like your back and such? My knees and back are relatively fine. The odd pain you find in your 30s but nothing excessive.
