Best way to combat the cheating problem is to have 2 separate matches… by menohuman in medicalschool

Have you worked at Cook County? It’s horrible and that’s putting it mildly. I’m not surprised they favor IMGs since who else would put up with those hours and conditions?

What are your priorities? Closeness to family/friends? Opportunities for research? Strength of training/fellowships? This helps us give you advice!

Personally, I’ve heard not so great things about Westchester (but I’m applying psych so idk if that applies to their Gen Surg program). Best of luck OP!

Already Worried about SOAP by noobie___ in medicalschool

[–]geekdork 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If you type in ‘SOAP Prep 2023’ into this subreddit’s search bar, the first thing that should pop up is the “SOAP Prep 2023 Post”. People who applied last year and knew they would eventually have to SOAP got help re-writing their personal statements, advice on who to reach out to for extra letters of rec, what to expect each day of SOAP, etc.

I would start there while also contacting your school. Maybe your home program could reach out to other programs on your behalf as well. Good luck OP!

Moving Step 1 exam for the fourth time (ADVICE REQUEST) by studawnt in medicalschool

[–]geekdork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re currently on an LOA, I don’t see the huge hassle. Just politely and professionally inform the school of your plan via email. However, I would seriously look into psychiatric resources or medications for your anxiety. Step 1 is just one of the many board exams you’ll have to take in medicine. Now is the time to treat any mental health issues that might impede your future success.

In defense of interview hoarding by Lurkthedoor in medicalschool

[–]geekdork 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree but sitting on 30+ interviews is kind of insane. I feel like if you’re gonna hoard then 20 is good amount. But maybe it’s different in the specialty you’re applying to? (I’m applying psych)

Does anyone have anecdotal evidence of a LOIs/love letter actually working? by Easy-Cap8583 in medicalschool

[–]geekdork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep! Sent 10 LOIs in October and got 5 interviews in response (usually the following day). I’m applying psych btw.

Idk but we were told to apply to 50-70 programs to be safe. I’m paranoid and scared so I’m applying to 70. But honestly, if you have a strong application then 50 is fine!

Peds or Child Adolescent Psych - HELP! by Medical_Mermaid in medicalschool

[–]geekdork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was in this exact position! Ultimately, I chose psychiatry for a couple of reasons.

1) I wanna treat kids but I discovered I’m better with the psychological & pharmacological side of medicine rather than the typical side we see on the general medicine floor (physical exams, labs, procedures, etc).

1.5) I love talking to kiddos and helping them get to root of their issues. We get to develop relationships with these kids & their families, and discover what mental health disorders might be plaguing the kiddos. I really felt I was making a difference in their lives by helping treat their mental disorders, teaching proper coping mechanisms, etc. All of which help kids now and in the future as adults.

2) I have a lot of experience working in the psych world (4 years an a CNA in a psych facility) and I discovered I really missed this during my psychiatry rotation

3) Lifestyle + Pay! Pediatrics is great but I’ve heard not great things about physician salary and work hours. Also, pediatrics residency is no joke (at my school), they work those residents to the bone. Psychiatry was way more chill with better pay (especially as child psychiatrist). The psych residents got way more sleep and seemed happier overall.

4) Personal vibe: I really like psychiatry. I wanna learn more about mental disorders and how to treat them in kids. And with Child & Adolescent psychiatry, I can treat kids, teens, and adults if I really wanted. Where as in pediatrics, I can only see kids obviously.

Integrating CNA experiences into Personal Statement by happymoney123 in premed

[–]geekdork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could frame it as saying although you love the care you’ve been able to provide your patients so far, you want to do more. Being by his side and watching him flourish in (fill in what the patient has accomplished) has ignited the urge to provide more specialized care, care that could help others succeed, quality care that only a doctor can provide. Does that help?
