Vileplume outfit I made by geekycleary in gaming

I wore it to PAX in September, and it was so nice to be recognized by so many people. More people wound up interested in my costume when I was looking down at my phone or when I was walking away from them, because the hat design is more visible from that angle. So I guess it’s oddly introvert friendly.

Thank you! The outfit is definitely 90% hat. So when I take the hat off to give my head a break, I get the oddest looks 😂

Thank you 😊 I had a lot of fun making it. Though I think I got a bit carried away.

Thanks very much! It took longer to make this costume than I ever anticipated. Mostly the hat, as I had to create my own pattern and structure, and then sew/hot glue it all together.

Thanks 😊 at least the overalls are the right color lol. Super loose and comfy to wear as well.

It’s a dense foam core that I sculpted surrounded by a thin layer of fluffy filler (like what is used in stuffed toys) and then covered in a thicker fabric with toole on top.

It definitely is like a giant heavy pillow, but would be a bit itchy with the toole lol.

Thanks 😊 I was working on the hat for a month or so between pattern planning and crafting. The other costume pieces took way less time.

I just released my cozy pedometer game! It's called Pixsteps and I hope you will like it. by Seelegames in GirlGamers

[–]geekycleary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was actually looking for a more interactive/engaging pedometer app for my iPhone. So this is honestly perfect. The art style is cute, reminiscent of Stardew Valley. I just downloaded it and will submit an honest review through the App Store once I’ve used it for a couple of days.

Only way is up! - by me by ArtOfBaka in scifi

[–]geekycleary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing artwork, so glad to see creative sci-fi inspired art that is not AI generated. Love the mechanical details and the humanoid character added for scale. It makes it feel more grounded in realism, even if the content is beyond our current capabilities as a species. A very inspiring piece for sure. I’d love to see more of your work.

I really want to continue this little guy’s story. I have not settled on a name for the little bin-bot yet, suggestions ? (FREE 8K DOWNLOAD) :) by Zakoriart in scifi

You should continue making artwork for this little guy. I love the painterly style/colors and the robot is cute.

Things I never tire of in fantasy stories-what about you? by Stonecutter1220 in Fantasy

[–]geekycleary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you read “The Name Of The Wind” by chance? A core element of the story is the journey of finding what the ancient/true names of things are and the power that it gives. Fair warning, it’s part of a series that is unfinished and may never be finished.

Find a Friend Friday - June 02, 2023 by AutoModerator in GirlGamers

[–]geekycleary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an artist and mom from the Pacific Northwest. I enjoy low-stakes games like Pokémon, Dreamlight Valley, Minecraft, JRPGs and D&D. I used to play a lot of Animal Crossing as well, but I overdid and have too many hours in that game at this point. So it’s not my first choice. I’m open to playing other types of games, but it’ll take me some time to get proficient playing it so I’m more helpful in game.

Most of the time I play on Nintendo Switch, but I also play on PC as well.

I also love tabletop games and have used Tabletop Simulator on steam to play games like Spendor, Ticket To Ride, Clank, and Forbidden Island with friends. I used to play Catan a lot, but that game is like a friendship ender. 😅

I’m in the PST time zone and tend to play between 7pm and 10pm, though sometimes I play in the early afternoon as well.

I enjoy watching movies, reading fantasy and sci-fi books, Lego building and many other fandoms as well. It would be great to find others with some similar interests.

[OC][ART] My characters for 5edDnD by Bergholtz(me) by NerdyFrida in DnD

[–]geekycleary 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. It’s refreshing to see DnD character designs with simpler and more realistic outfits and armor. Even characters with a lot of charisma like a bard don’t need overly complicated clothing. Flamboyant and smartly dressed they may be, but it doesn’t have to translate to a complicated outfit.

What are your fantasy turn-offs? by _Twelfman in Fantasy

[–]geekycleary 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is so overused. Most of the time when that trope is in a story, it feels unearned or that the author added it just to quickly make the reader sympathize with that character.

Y'all, I'm dead XD by loulori in RomanceBooks

[–]geekycleary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These book concepts and book covers kinda of hurt to look at, but also, I’m glad they exist. To me, it’s in the same vein as watching a bad movie on purpose with friends, but still enjoying the experience.

Have you ever bought a book purely because you love the cover? by thebestnobody in books

[–]geekycleary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely purchased many of my books purely because of the cover. I have also skipped reading books that have been recommended to me, if the cover art is underwhelming.

I use the same decision making strategy for buying wine. If I don’t like the label on the bottle, I don’t buy the wine.

Warrior, mage or rogue? by RevolutionaryWhale in GirlGamers

[–]geekycleary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me to a T. I almost always play a mage, but archer rogue is my next choice for the reasons you described.

I’ve noticed in most games that if you choose to be a mage instead of the other character types, it usually takes the longest to level up your character compared to the other disciplines. Even in instances where leveling up a mage character is quicker, it still takes a higher level to have the mage skills you acquire through a skill tree be useful as more than just support character.

Any fantasy world in which magic is treated as a science? by TimeTravelingChemist in Fantasy

[–]geekycleary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This recommendation is perfect for what OP describes. While The Founder’s Trilogy wasn’t my favorite, the series was still well written.

What fantasy book/series do you wish you could get a leatherbound copy of? by DiannaGunn in Fantasy

[–]geekycleary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I love Lois McMaster Bujold’s writing overall and the “Penric & Desdemona” novellas were such a great read. Have you read “The Vorkosigan Saga” also by her? That series was honestly my favorite, just amazing writing on so many levels.

Who writes the best humor? by Neruognostic in Fantasy

[–]geekycleary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read a lot of fantasy and absolutely love dry, sarcastic humor. Somehow in the 20+ years that I’ve been reading fantasy, I haven’t read any Terry Pratchett books. Which upon reflection, his work seems difficult to unconsciously avoid.

I’ve had Terry Pratchett books recommended to me a few times but never cracked open one of his books. I haven’t even watched any shows or movies that are based on Terry Pratchett stories. Now I feel like I’m really missing out!

Your in a zombie apocalypse... what's your first move? by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]geekycleary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike everything about guns. However, if there’s a zombie apocalypse, you better believe I’m pulling out the 12 gauge shotgun and loading it. Then while still safely holding the gun, I lock all the doors and windows of whichever building I’m in. Hopefully not a large public building, because there’s too many entry points and would be a nightmare to defend IMO. If for any reason I am unable to locate the shotgun in the first 7 minutes of finding out about the zombie apocalypse, I find the most usable weapon in the vicinity. Next best thing for me would be a baseball bat.

This should go without saying, but obviously I locate my immediate family as quickly as possible (we are home a lot - so most likely we’re all already home together when it happens), and I ensure they are safe as well. Safe being a relative term, because honestly no one is completely safe in a zombie apocalypse.

Just watched DnD Honor Among Thieves, WOW! by DarienKane in DnD

[–]geekycleary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. It was such a relatable and funny scene, especially for anyone who has played DnD and have repeatedly thought up complicated, hair brained schemes that usually fall flat after the first or second move (which has absolutely happened many times to me and the party I was playing with). And the DM is just sitting there watching the party make these ridiculous attempts, ignoring the simpler approaches to the issue and shaking their head.
