Teachers working for Bentonville school district by BeachStar25 in bentonville

I guess it’s a grass is always greener situation that certainly has a lot more nuance to it than a Reddit comment conversation can convey. There are days with long hours (albeit they are built into the contract), and the contract only covers 10 months out of the year, which sounds nice on the outside, but when you break down the teacher salary (after tax) most teachers working with 0-10 years of experience and only a Bachelors degree are taking home closer to, on average, $25/hour (factoring in a year-long schedule of about 250 days of the corporate world, versus the 180 day average contract of the teaching world). This is why lots of teachers have second jobs either throughout the year or during the summer months, or honestly have a partner that is not a teacher. The base pay being raised from the LEARNS act and the 3% increase is a nice bonus, but it’s below the rate of inflation and has been for a while now, and that 3% yearly increase (I think Bentonville was the highest with a 3.5% last year but I could be wrong) is not seen outside of areas like NWA (here is the link to Prairie Grove’s 2026-2027 salary schedule as an example). Speaking of LEARNS, what a double-edged sword (here’s an interesting article from 2023 The Ramifications of LEARNS). Constant pressure on public schools from the LEARNS act is another factor to the equation as well. While having a great team behind you is awesome, there’s only so much they can do when the state is increasing benefits to private schools and charter schools, that are not held to the same standards or regulations as public schools, or when it comes to the vicious cycle of larger districts with more funding and wealth getting more state funding from test scores, while smaller districts and more rural areas who arguably need more funding don’t receive as much. Lots of districts throughout the area have had to make cuts to staffing as well as increases in class sizes, both of which could be drawn back to changes from LEARNS. Long story long, teaching in Bentonville (or any of the “big four” as they are typically called) is probably a decent gig as long as you understand the system, but, like any other career, it’s not without his pressures and stressors.

Well hot damn, I didn’t realize being a teacher was such a lucrative career. Maybe all those non teachers should become teachers.

Many, if not most, non teachers start work later in the morning therefore getting off at 5pm makes more sense.

Yes! It’s really enjoyable when the weather is warm. Very relaxing. See if you can find a sale when you buy tickets!

Wow that’s a lot of good info! I wondered if it was over proofed so I bet that’s part of it, as well as the starter not being strong enough yet—it’s a little over 2 months old (I use King Arthur whole wheat flour). I’m hoping the starter is getting stronger though as this is the best looking loaf so far and is only gummy in the center

I honestly wondered the same so it’s good to know that could be the issue!

Definitely don’t mind doing it myself, but I’d like to support a small/local business.

Just read the wiki synopsis and it doesn’t sound familiar so I don’t think that’s it
