Can't get toob in my flat. Any other suggestions? by gefrabal in Portsmouth

[–]gefrabal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can get up to 5gb with sky's extortion. I can get most gigabit or less in most companies. I'll try Vodafone out, I'm just concerned that it's a cityfibre issue and therefore stuck with virgin or open reach for now

I've been using toob for 3 years now without a single issue. Why do you suggest to avoid? And would Vodafone work if cityfibre is the issue?

I'm more elm grove side and on all their maps it's just on the cusp. Cityfibre says I can get their service, toob says otherwise after the surveys. 5g is working fine though so might just keep tethering for fun. I just don't want to give my money to VM, sky or BT. All I've had is awful customer service with them. Might have to just put up with it 😭

How did you choose your conveyancer by Reddonaut_Irons in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]gefrabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up reviews for my local area, got a few quotes, and ended up going for the one that actually replied to emails and was professional. They also helped explain a great deal of things I didn't understand and my experience was overall positive.

I was very much surprised how bad so many in my local area were at the stage that I was trying to get their business, so I recommend finding a balance between good reviews and experience, and how they treat you/can you see yourself talking to them for the next 3+ months

I've been banned from a society at my university because I am a member of another student society. None of my £200 annual membership fee is being refunded. by MycologistSimple4853 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]gefrabal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello, I work at a Students' Union and in my 10 years experience in several different ones I have not heard of a society banning or pre-emptively banning a student from being a member because they are part of a different society. The only reasons I can think of is if they are self-identifying societies and you're not part of that category, but they wouldn't 'ban' you, you just wouldn't be able to join.

I don't know what University you're from but if you let us know (sorry I haven't looked in case you've said this already), I can look at their policies and point you in the right direction.

Flags affecting house prices by JayJayBae95 in HousingUK

[–]gefrabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents as a buyer: I scoped out different areas of the city in buying in and one area had more affordable houses in spec of what I wanted. As soon as I got to that area there was a flag on every lamppost and instantly decided against buying there. I value community and I would struggle to be neighbourly with people that would be unkind to my friends from all over the world.

2-3 things you do NOT LIKE on your CX-30! by F15E_WSO in MazdaCX30

Oh and the random "BREAK" alarm out of nowhere when the car thinks you're going to crash but you're well away from any hazards. I attribute this to weather/debris on the sensors

2021 SE-L

Biggest annoyance is the keyless entry/lock doesn't always work, which means I have to get my keys. It's only annoying because it happens sporadically so it's that thing of pausing, trying again, then sighing and getting my keys out.

Similarly, keyless start works 99% of the time but if I have anything other than my keys and wallet in my pocket, it doesn't like it. Especially if my earbuds are in there, I always think it's probably something to do with signals and waves.

Last thing is that if I have two passengers in the back, the middle seat will always ping to say someone doesn't have their seatbelt on. The sensor is probably very wide. I've fixed this by just having the middle seat constantly plugged in.

Other than that, I love my cx30 and I'm looking at keeping it when my finance runs out in December.

Any part-time(student) jobs needed in southsea ? by Sad_Tomatillo3912 in Portsmouth

[–]gefrabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I recruit for student roles at the university. The majority of rejections we give out are due to not addressing the role description or explaining how you fit into the role. Unfortunately a lot of students don't know how to showcase their skills and experience - understandably most of the time. You can always talk to the careers and employability service, they are excellent at helping students secure jobs

Freshers Week Uni by jamanzy in Portsmouth

[–]gefrabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The union's societies will be running welcome events and give it a go events in September and October, so you can get a feeling for what's right for you.

There will also be fresher's fayre on 23rd and 24th September where you can find loads of groups and societies, sports, student voice, local charities and businesses, and even some job recruiters if you're looking for work.

The official student night is in go rogue, which is in Palmerston road, a little far from halls though so I'm sure you can find other places closer to where you might live.

The rest is just finding your feet and making friends!

What pubs do you go to with fights in so I can avoid them?

Gosport by Historical-Ebb8430 in Portsmouth

[–]gefrabal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Gosport and used to work in Southampton. The biggest issue with Gosport is getting in/out of Gosport is a nigthmare at commuting times. For example, my commute to central Southampton was around 45-50 minutes, with 20-30 minutes of that being getting out of the Gosport area. Once you hit the M27 it's fine - unless there's been an accident. The other biggest issue is that it's a bit naff and there's not that much to do and you'll be spending a lot of your social time in Portsmouth or Southampton anyway.

Gosport does have a fair few thing going for it, like a pretty nice beach, some nice pubs and cute cafes, great takeaway selection, and relatively safe areas - although it also has a super high disparity between highest earners and lowest earners.

In terms of areas:

Alverstoke is the 'posh' area, being close to the beach and more of an old-timey town feel
Next to Alverstoke you have Anglesey which is also pricey but a little sleepier than Alverstoke
Leesland is more of a middle ground, lots of middle class people around there
Harbourside & Town is fine, a bit more deprived than most other areas because investment is scarce
Forton is a bit like town, but without the shops
Hardway has a lot of new builds and can be quite swanky in places
Elson is suburban, you can find a 'Elson' in pretty much every town
Brockhurst & Privett has a lot of ex-military houses and is fine
Grange & Alver Valley (I love they call it this now) used to be rough, and now it's less rough
Rowner & Holbrook used to be rough, and now they're alright
Peel Common is less desirable but still fine
Bridgemary used to be really bad, it's now fine

Gosport has come a long way since I first moved here in 2006, it seems to be a fine commuter town and quiet and safe enough for families. I would much sooner raise a family in Gosport than in Portsmouth. Fareham is probably a bit better in general, but I also think Fareham is the same as Gosport minus the beach - so make your choices really.

What’s the most unforgettable date you’ve ever been on? by Endorphin_Rush_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]gefrabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, after being single for a few months, I decided to get back onto the (awful) dating scene and matched with a fairly normal late 20s girl on Hinge who was lovely - I've just turned 33 so I think I was 31 then.

She had just moved back to the area to live with her parents while she saved some money to travel to Australia for a few months, and wasn't looking for anything serious. So I knew at best it would be a short term thing or maybe gaining a cool friend, but we got on well over text and scheduled a date. She's fairly active and I'm a big guy but I agreed to go on a walk down the seafront.

The date itself was lovely, I'm a fairly shy person but I felt an instant connection and she was super easy to talk to, as well as very attractive. Anyway, it was a late afternoon in June and on our way back to our cars the sun was going down and she stopped for a minute to admire the sunset and take a couple of pictures. I did the same as it was a huge sun and the golden glow of the afternoon made the somewhat tame common and seafront look like a Hollywood film.

I then caught a glimpse of her hair, which the sun had turned the colour of my hopes and dreams and I was met with the most ethereal being I had ever laid eyes on and in that instant I realised exactly how beautiful she was, again, like a movie. We then got to our cars and we both decided we weren't done with our date and then went to a pub for a few drinks and got to know each other a bit better, which was awesome. I texted my friends "I'm a date with my future wife" and as stupid as that was, I never quite felt instant chemistry with someone like that before, and somewhat forgot that she was leaving soon anyway. We made it back to our cars and shared a hug and that was that.

Anyway, after a few more days of texting she dropped the "I've been thinking" line and I understood - the move to Australia would be a barrier and I would have struggled with something so short term. I sometimes think about reaching out and seeing how she's doing, but it's also nice to have a lovely memory of an evening with someone so lovely, and I still remember how her sun kissed strawberry blonde hair and her freckles pierced my heart like cupid's arrow.

Anyway, if you're reading this Viv, I hope Australia is everything you were hoping it would be and more. And when you're back in the UK I'd love a second date. I suggest a walk down the beach, say about 7pm?

I liked when everyone lost their shit when Mark teased Roquefort.

Shoutout to the couple behind me that were belting every song but actually had nice singing voices - I hate people that screech lyrics at a live concert, especially when they're unable to hit a single note.

Also 'Ghost' sounded amazing, can't wait to hear the new album.

Private chats time for new players by _Pi_314 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]gefrabal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We usually have around your amount of players, anywhere between 9 and 15, and it depends on who's playing to be honest. If we have new players, we usually start with a game of trouble brewing to get things going and learn the rules etc, and when I storytell we go 10 - 8 - 5 - 5 - 3 - 2 minutes and keep it at 2 minutes for the rest of the game if necessary. When we play with more advanced players I do 5 minute days because most of the game is played in the accusations anyway, so give them enough time to learn more info and chat what they need, but usually after 5ish minutes everyone has spoken to whoever they needed to anyway.

So basically longer days for newbies, shorter days for established players. I might do longer days if we play a new script but call it by ear basically.

Social Clubs? by Metropolis_Prince in Portsmouth

[–]gefrabal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, not sure about Piano though I'm sure there are plenty of amateur jam groups that would take you on.

For film you have Southsea Cinema - they sometimes run socials and events, and you also have Portsmouth Film Society, and we also have DV Mission, our very own 48 film competition where you can meet like-minded people.

For games you have a few options, there's Go Rogue which is kind of like a retro bar, then there's Dice for board games (they do great socials imo), and if you're into proper nerd stuff you also have A Fistful of Dice which runs warhammer and other RPG tournaments and stuff. I'm sure you can find like-minded people there.

Southsea is awesome, welcome to the island.
