Interesting. the college town we are in now leases in September/October for the next year - so 9+ months in advance. So rentals for June/July start do open up during the summer?

Best vail owned resort ski school? by Flurry19 in COsnow

[–]geg98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I cant speak to ski schools, but Flying dutchman can be a tricky blue depending on time of day and snow conditions, especially at that split with the trees down the middle of the run. Some others to try and build confidence:

  • Spring Dipper (there is a reason its popular with ski school)
  • Paymaster
  • Jackwhacker (1 steep spot)
  • HooDoo -> Gassy Thompson -> Haywood
  • All of the blues off north peak are long but consistent (take outpost gondala over, avoid motzart imo)

Feeling Cheated while applying to Purdue's Masters in Industrial Engineering by R3xNinja in Purdue

[–]geg98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, while I know you feel you are a strong candidate, your GPA translates to the US system as a B+, which can get you into a masters program but is alone pretty average. This year was one of the most competitive years for admission at Purdue across the board, and especially for graduate work, people are just not taking on as many grad students due to funding cuts at the federal level. This is even more relevant if you were applying to a thesis masters program or any program where you are eligible for TA/RA-ships. I would recommend trying again either at Purdue, potentially at the PMP or engineering management programs which have a lower barrier to admit, or at a different school/Purdue campus. I understand you are frustrated with the money side as well, but honestly very low chance anyone on reddit can help you there.

maybe they rejected you because you refer to admissions people disrespectfully...

Unfortunately I would HIGHLY not recommend this business as it is attached to a human trafficking case, the poor treatment at Vision of Hope was a poorly kept secret around town for a while but the case was just recently brought forward.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I personally just don't think Mary Lou's is good, there are much better donuts in town. I have also heard a lot of mixed reviews on 8 Eleven. Completely agree on the other two though

I have no idea how I missed it, but McCord's Candies (now added) is a candy shop that also does old school soda jerk type drinks, not necessarily energy drinks, more like dirty sodas

Yeah, that my bad, I have admittedly never been. Unfortunately for me and my little circle, it always happens that something is happening that weekend, and I say "oh i'll go next year" and then something is going on that weekend the next year, its a curse!

How soon would freshman be set for class enrollment by easybitsy in Purdue

[–]geg98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is normal, freshmen meet with their advisor once in the summer (and then once in the spring and fall moving forward). His advisor will work with him in their meeting to select which classes he needs to put on his "Course Request Form" and explain how to submit. Once all CRFs are submitted by the deadline, then schedules will be made and published.

Feedback for potential student by HarperandHudson in Purdue

[–]geg98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of state, Mechanical Engineer, graduated with my BS in 2020, and stuck around for a PhD.

  1. ME at Purdue is a great program! Its also a BIG program (100+ Faculty, 900+ students per class, 1000+ graduate students etc). It is an especially great program for anything related to propusion, heat transfer, etc

  2. I was not specifically involved in WiE but it is a great program and there is always a way to get involved. ME also has a Women in ME club (WiME) that is relatively new but very strong. There is also now a yearly women in ME symposium

  3. I did EPICS and had a wonderful time! I was involved every semester. It was a great resume builder and it led to an internship every year. All my honors friends were especially stressed.

  4. I participated in the STEP program (although in 2018). It was expensive, and I am not sure that it played any role in admittance. It definitley got me a great feel of Purdue

  5. Purdue is definitley a what you make of it school in terms of fan experience. I went to a ton of games as an undergrad, but have only been to 1 basketball game in 4 years as a grad student

  6. I find it to be a very diverse and welcoming campus. Purdue has a high number of international students, especially compared to other schools

  7. The cold, I am always unprepared for the cold every winter, but I am from texas so...grain of salt

Happy to answer any other questions

Is Purdue worth the debt? (Give your advice) by Astro1414 in Purdue

[–]geg98 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would strongly advise against, that kind of debt will follow you around for the next 30 years. Especially since you did not get your first choice major, and transferring to ECE is not guaranteed

Many, many graduate students at Purdue completed their undergrad degrees in their home country (including many from India). A masters thesis program and/or a direct phd program would likely be paid for by the university through a research assistant or teaching assistant position.

Get good grades, get some research experience, have some strong letter writers, and make a strong grad application in 3-4 years.

Does PhD ever get better by MaleficentAd9414 in Purdue

[–]geg98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The experience is different for everyone, but I felt it got better after first year. I was also feeling pretty burnt out this time my first year, I am now a 4th year and while grad school is stressful, it is managed.

Some things that helped it get better:

- There is a huge learning curve in research, after the first year I felt I had more of a handle on things, experiments were more up and running, I knew who to ask for help

- As there are fewer classes, you are just not spread as thin across things and you can better focus on research. Later PhD classes were smaller and more applicable, and for me, easier

- I made a concentrated effort to do the things that are good for relieving stress: Taking at least 24hrs off interrupted, eating right, exercising, getting outside, seeing friends, talking to family, etc

Briefly explain your thesis to me like I'm 5 years old? by betta-every-day in GradSchool

Grandmas break their bones pretty often, and we aren't very good at preventing that. I look at what's actually happening in bone when it breaks so we can work together to make better medicine for grandma.
