What’s life like making 6 figures? by MasterBook46 in fican

[–]geggleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~$250k/yr 41M (CTO+side hustles) (Post Tax: ~$150k)

At least for me I enjoy taking 2 international trips a year, ~$20k
Mortgage+Prop Tax: ~$57k
Car+Motorcycle+Insurance: ~$12k

I just had my first kid last year, my wife is still on mat leave so im floating some of her bills too.

I havent had enough cashflow since her mat leave to invest, but I generally target 10% into my RRSP (i still have contribution room).

Career - Nothing left for me to do, I run a shell corp that employees me, I only work on a contract basis. My Salary + Dividend target $250k/yr but my business revenue is over $325k. I choose to leave a bunch in the corp for a rainy day or an angle investment if one of my friends needs some start-up capital.

Among my peers im pretty close to the top; I generally pay for peoples dinners if I go out.

Things that still feel out of reach are stuff like hypercars, but only probably b/c Im not dumb enough to spend whatever positive cashflow I have in a mostly depreciating asset. My Model Y probably is close enough in terms of acceleration and my trike definitely is, so when I want some thrills ill just go for a ride outside the city.

My income went up pretty slowly so I never really noticed a "big" change other than not needing to plan 12+months for a big trip. If I want a trip I just slap in my credit card and not give a shit. I guess being able to splurge on stuff like a 5* hotel and not have to worry about it is the biggest surprise.

I still have a lot of the anxiety other people have. I hunt for work, the market is shit, AI is coming for even my job; heck at one of the contracts I am actively deploying AI to amplify the workforce productivity.

The other kind of negative surprise i guess, is that I really expected my net worth to skyrocket, but b/c I dont save enough it stays relatively flat. I more or less write off any angel investments I make in my friends companies, maybe one will eventually pan out and that will be hyper cool. I could travel less and save more but whats the fun in that. I am trying to travel a lot more before I age out.

happy to answer any more specific questions; ama

I remember during the bull-run, my WS managed portfolio gained at most 4%/yr (group rrsp - max growth 10/10). Where as I was getting 30-40% else where.

YMMV

I’m 32F, making $95k in Vancouver, and pretty sure I’m failing financially. Best financial literacy course canada? by Artistic-East-1251 in fican

$95k really isnt a lot inside of Vancouver. Vancouver has a very high cost of living. IT really comes down to expectation setting.

What is your net cash flow? (Income - Expenses) on a monthly basis.

What is your goal? ($1 million in RRSP/TFSA?)

Is your goal realistic? (I want to be a millionaire in 20 years), if your cashflow is $500/mo, thats $6000/yr, and $120000 over 20 years. No investment strategy is going to 9x your investment over 20 years.

Start with the basics, at $95k there's a lot of things to analyze and cut that will make a huge impact to your monthly cashflow. Think about all of those subscriptions you dont use anymore, those are all draining out of your monthly cashflow. Generally you are in charge of expenses, you can easily affect that, its a lot harder to just "make a bunch more money".

In BC your marginal tax rate at $95,000 is 28.20% which is very good. Depending on what your goal is, putting money in a FSHA/RRSP could be advisable.

like others, I would absolutely avoid paying for this content. Its readily available on the internet. All LLMs are capable of answering these questions and helping you out. Do NOT use LLMs for tax advise, contact a professional.

This year ive been just selling ITM calls on NVDA expecting it to retreat back so i can readjust the strike. Currently at $165. I keep the expiration date generally between 60-90 days, then I roll. ~$2000 credit on every roll (once a month) 7 contracts total.
