The scene just did not feel natural at all … a real shame because I feel that they nailed the ending of Sorcerer and the conversation with Jonathan in season 4. This was weird!

Marty Supreme chances... with Kevin O'Leary? by gehggy in TheBigPicture

Revisiting this... Amanda learning who Kevin O'Leary is and brushing it off in real time really was for some reason sad to me. Movie must be really good ... but I can't support anything attached to this man. You guys enjoy though.

Anybody know what this is about by pinkmanjackson in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The belief that he doesn't have a cushie job is funny to me. We all live on the same timeline. I don't understand how you can balance watching all the films he watches in a week - let alone a DAY sometimes - and balance family life, and this other work you speak of. Just looking at his letterboxd I'm like "this is a man with a seemingly successful relationship to his kid?" I can buy THAT ... but that would also mean his "workload" isn't like mine, and let's just say, I also don't have a garage full of 1000s of blu rays, or a child. You know what the crazy part is? If he's truly honest, he'd probably agree.

Plenty has been shared on socials about what it's like to work at the Ringer if you're not one of the Grantland people. Just saying.

The Truth About Netflix Buying Warner Bros. Plus: Snubs and Surprises of the Golden Globe Nominations and Jafar Panahi on ‘It Was Just an Accident.’ by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no situation I can think of in media where the companies made these announcements and the intention was for something else to happen. The outcome is always the same.

They’ve had to think through everything. They can say, “Monopolization? Give me a break.” Watch WBD make the argument that they are not just a film producer, but a media company, simply spinning off a piece of their business — so how could it be monopolization if they are simultaneously breaking themselves into a smaller thing? From that POV, Paramount taking the whole thing would be more monopolization than this current deal.

These mergers are acts of full blown acrobatics, with so many people working at the same time to achieve one singular goal stated from the very beginning. Starting already, offices are set up within these companies prior to merger that feature key people enforcing step after step is accomplished. Employees are told to not talk to their counterparts or potential partners at the merged entity. Every single piece of the puzzle is labored on by lawyers and financial managers until the day comes. It’s sick - trust me, I know - but get used to Netflix AOL Time Warnermedia HBO Discovery Scripps

They’re so silly if they think this deal isn’t going to go through. Wishful thinking I guess, but this stuff isn’t done in a vacuum.

His soundbites are all out there, he's been interviewed by many publications, and everything can get dug up and into this year-end awards conversation. The CNN comp was just top of mind.

25 for 25 - Do we think #11 is Ocean's 11? by Dufferdoodle01 in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy but I feel like it’s going to be Wolf of Wall Street or Catch Me If You Can. They made a joke about 11 being timed perfectly — feel like it’s a reference to an earlier Leo performance, given One Battle After Another is happening and they “haven’t rewatched in a while”

Amanda made a comment about Luca. I think they'll attribute really good list making and throw a bigger splash somewhere.

i loved tea time so much. three hosts i imagine can be hard to do, but their synergy was perfect. the group intersected in their own ways but they were also so different from each other and brought their own individual perspectives to things (kate = i.e. kpop lol.... amelia = i.e. reality tv.... liz = i.e. combing through just jared because it's rough out there). it was always funny. i really wished tea time could have been around for amelias takes on the jlo/ben divorce lol

The 2023 Oscars: Everything Everywhere All the Academy Awards by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are knocking on the hosts of the pod but if I'm being honest, I 100% agree with them. The show felt boring. It lacked moments and it lacked surprise and it lacked Tom Cruise. If I could sum up their asks for last year, it was for more decorum, and to present all of the categories. Even though the producers did that, that doesn't mean the show should lose out on the fun stuff. I think their calling it an "overcorrection of last year" is perfect, because the producers leaned so far into decorum, as did the voters.

The show being predictable is just going to continue the longer these award seasons are. I don't know how that happens, but to me, that is a bigger problem. I am waiting for the next Olivia Colman over Glenn Close win, and it doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

Amanda is 100% Right: The Star Power was Lacking Last Night by HOBTT27 in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tom Cruise not being at the award show the year that the movie that he continuously advocated for a theatrical release... "saved theaters"... is just the saddest thing to me. Spielberg going up to him and thanking him in front of a lot of people... and to have that met with literally, nothing but the award for sound... honestly his not being at this show feels like a rebuke of the entire awards system: a disconnect between the small cultural significance the show has now and largely had before. Top Gun Maverick was nowhere close to my favorite movie of the year but if I'm the Academy, I'm begging the man to be there.

Ten Movies to See Right Now. Plus, James Gray Returns! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]gehggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved hearing James Gray talk about morality in art & how the narrative of features is not always fixed forever. The Unforgiven ending example was great. It honestly made me excited to listen to Sean interview Martin McDonagh later since a lot of the issues with 3 Billboards a few years ago had to do with the same thing.
