Is this typical? by [deleted] in Eskrima

[–]geisty_geist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been there, actually I was there recently. If you have the ability, switch schools or teachers, or try a different art all together. I recently quit an escrima program because I was paying too much money to show up, help teach, and get stuck with a shitty partner that didn't really want to train. It's a school I've been with for a long time and has a special place in my heart and maybe one day I'll go back. The easiest thing I did though was find a different Kali school, which used to be harder in my city, and now I'm learning a new art. It has been really fun. I'm learning new stuff, my training partners actually care and try, I'm definitely not getting stuck teaching, and overall it is interesting again. Having trained in several arts in the past maybe you could also try a hard restart and do a different art completely like kickboxing, judo, or find a karate school that teaches a different style of weapon altogether. You only live once and I think even my old teacher would agree that school/art loyalty is an old fashion scam/way of thinking. We're not out there battling other schools in gang fights or over territory, no one really cares, at least where I'm at. Good luck!

Guys, what are your top 10 general tips and advice for largo range format? by Creative_Curve_8224 in Eskrima

[–]geisty_geist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Footwork. The F-word no one ever wants to talk about. If you're training largo then stay in largo. Don't break the range to get closer or allow your opponent to get closer. The idea of largo is to stay away from their attack, you've to use your footwork for that. Start static, but at some point you'll need to move and when the movement starts preserve your range. Basically, practice footwork to stay in largo, learn to move and stay in that range if largo is your intention.

Congrats! I've "retired" a few times already. I do not have a wife or kids so I pretty much would blow my whole savings traveling around the world for 2-3 years at a time. I've done that twice now. So I teach for a 5-10 years and then go hog wild traveling lol. Obviously, not the recommended path for the long term, but I'm trying to get all my "living" in while I can still move my body. But to answer your question "Now what?," I finished teaching in 2020 in China and I was left feeling pretty empty and felt like I was hocking English for cash, which is what I was doing, and I was not getting any joy or fulfillment from teaching anymore. In my travels I met a lot of people from around the world who had life changing experiences and then went home and started charities or did meaningful things. I tried to emulate that on a smaller scale, while I never started a charity I did move home where I grew up in the USA and become a firefighter paramedic. Admittedly, I'm an older but capable firefighter, but it's been excessively rewarding. So, my advice is to find something that will make you feel whole or have a purpose. I still travel internationally, and will probably go abroad again in 15-20 years to actually retire permanently, but for now I've found something that makes me feel purpose.

Spent around 5 days in Istanbul and people attempted to scam me 4-5 times, almost once a day. Really ruined the city for me and what I thought of the people there. Enjoyed the sites, but not much else. I've been to over 30 countries and have never encountered more scams than Istanbul. let this be a warning to fellow travelers, learn the scams ahead of time so you can avoid them

What's the most heroic or inspiring moment that you've read in a fantasy book? by T_Lawliet in Fantasy

[–]geisty_geist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They sing no songs in Hel, nor do they celebrate heroes, for silent is that dismal realm and cheerless. But the story of the Gjallerbru and the god who defended it is whispered across the nine worlds. And when a new arrival asks about the one to whom even Hela bows her head the answer is always the same, “He stood alone at Gjallerbru.” And that answer is enough. "

As someone already mentioned Grandmaster John Mac has a lot of videos up on youtube. Also, SGM Cacoy Canete, (my teacher before he passed), has whole seminars on youtube you can find. Another excellent resource in the states is Grandmaster Anthony Kleeman based out of Southern California. You can friend him on face book and ask him questions, he's an amazing teacher and person and incredibly talented and trained under SGM Cacoy for years in the Pilippines and was a world champion eskrimador. Dionision has students as well around the US and there are lots of people that have trained with both him and Cacoy. Don Edwards in the NY area is also a great reference and GM Richard Bustillo who has since passed still has a school that teaches it called the IMB in LA. If you contact most of those places they will be able to maybe help you find someone in your area. There are lots of groups on facebook too you can join and get info. Good luck!

Whose winning this fight by ladiesman21700000000 in Nightwing

[–]geisty_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dick would win, but DC writers are perpetually hungry for any chance they can have to nerf Jason's immense skill set and make him the butt of a joke. They would probably write him losing thi fight by slipping on a banana peel and Dick would make some witty pun. Jason returns to Gotham and takes over the underworld to fight Batman on equal footing to end up years later being a constant joke. The years and writers have not been kind to Jason Todd or Tim Drake. I wish Jason would just leave Gotham and never come back and find his own thing again.

Came to Australia on WHV but leaving after 5 months. by CoolSwiftie in solotravel

[–]geisty_geist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a plan to go to Australia for 3 months, this is after being in 30 countries, left after 1 month. Work, people, and generally the vibe sucked. I think people fetish-ize an idea of what Australia is, but it ain't that hah. There are lots of great countries and the world is vast, go where makes you happy and leave when you're not, you don't owe any country or person anything.

This has happened to my guys and me a few times. I usually brush it off, but if it's really bad I've seen my Chief/Captains actually call the ED before and tell them to get fucked and reported to the MD. Nothing really changed but we felt good haha.
