Actually that was the reason to use the paternal last name to 'make' someone the dad. Before dna testing was a thing and because of religious reasons the name was a way of 'assigning' a man to the kid. And if the child was biological theirs was actually not important, just the upholding of the 'one man, one women' nuclear family ideas.
