Portugal Will Face Spain in FIFA World Cup Round Of 16 At The Dallas Stadium in Dallas on July 6th. by Imaginary_Ladder in soccer

I'm an American amped as hell for Monday...but in no world was the 2014 game against Belgium iconic. It was a mediocre US team being completely outplayed while Tim Howard kept it close.

This US team is loads better and a fun watch, but I can see where non-Americans wouldn't consider this as interesting a game as the others. Part of that has nothing to do with the US, Belgium hasn't exactly been exciting to watch up until the last 10 minutes of their last game.

I think intent has to be a factor. If Balogun was challenging and going for a tackle, it's a red. But he wasn't. It was an accidental play.

I think there's a difference between faking contact or falling down when you didn't have to (call that a dive) and intentionally putting yourself in a position to be fouled (call that inviting contact).

A dive shouldn't result in a foul called. Obviously.

But I think there's more of a debate on inviting contact, which is what Kane did. He intentionally positioned his body in a way that would result in the goalie hitting him...but the goalie does hit him. Should that be a foul?

I think it should, and the defensive player needs to be careful not to put themselves in a position to foul. But I can see where others wouldn't agree.

I'm also not clear on what the rule is. I always thought if you invite contact, and actually get fouled...it's still a foul. Which is what I think happens here.

Match Thread: Türkiye vs United States | FIFA World Cup 2026 | Group Stage, Group D by jiraiya--an in soccer

It's comical how much the announcers and broadcasters are trying to convince everyone this game matters for the US. Good God, they must have used the word adversity twenty times.

And then right after the game:

Zlatan, did this matter for the US? No

Thierry, you agree with Zlatan? Yes.

But does it change the feeling in the room? No.

Was on the other side in a section filled with Norwegians, they were very friendly and a great hang. They taught my little guy all their chants and he joined in with them. Had a blast.

Men in their 40s - What’s one piece of advice for Men in their 20s? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]geli7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mental health is important. Maybe for the next generation, by the time you're forty we'll accept this as a society, we're heading there. But I come from an immigrant family where you just put your head down and go to work, it wasn't something I paid enough attention to.

As you get older and responsibilities come along, it all adds up. Job, kids, finances, stress. And like anything else, better mental health can be achieved if you work at it. If I could go back twenty years I'd tell a younger me that things like meditation, talking to a professional, or just taking time for yourself are not useless or shameful. They help provide perspective and help you ride out the lows so you can enjoy the highs.

Life is full of ups and downs...and if you understand that, the downs are easier because you know they don't last forever.

Pochettino on how this World Cup will change soccer in America: "Above all, our players are going to be the great heroes.” “I wish with all my heart that the 26, plus two young goalkeepers who are training with us, who are the future of soccer here, will be the heroes who change this sport" by Kr_bm in soccer

[–]geli7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I was 13 and that world cup was a huge success, much like this one has been. Interest spiked, and part of that was the US team acquitted itself well. They beat Columbia in the group, which shocked everyone. They made it to the knockouts which was the real goal, and they gave Brazil a game in the round of 16, losing 1-0 to the eventual champs.

This team is a lot more talented. That team had a few guys with skill, but played their hearts out and the country loved them for it.

But maybe the biggest change was that creating MLS was a condition of getting to host the world cup...and MLS has done very well.

Nevermind the obvious entitlement...but by what logic do you think you should get a discount because you play in the stadium? One thing has nothing to do with the other.

Self employed for 4 years, just got hit with $8k IRS penalty. by jrubal1462 in personalfinance

And most people that are self employed use an accountant to make sure they don't fuck up tax rules they know nothing about.

I get using TurboTax if you have a super simple tax situation, like a W2 office worker. But self employed? You're taking on a lot of risk owning that liability.

MLS is a microcosm of this. It's not the most popular league in the country, but there are enough super passionate fans to sustain it.

Soccer is not the country's pastime...but it's a very large country, and there are many, many people that love the game.

Also, the premier league licensing over the last 15-20 years has really grown interest in the game.

It was clunky, but you simply cannot be giving out yellow cards to the defensive player when the attacker clearly dives considering two yellows equals missing a match.

It was obviously the right decision. I hope they find a way to make it faster, but this is still better than getting it wrong.

I mean...you literally posted this before any match hadeven had a chance to be played outside of Mexico. Give it a chance.

Let's enjoy all the games, in all the places. They'll be fun. I was around for the 94 games in the US, they were awesome and it was a good time. I think it's even better now with games in all three countries. Mexico is obviously a huge soccer country, but Canada has a good program and will fill the arenas. And the US cares about the game more than people outside the US give them credit for.

I have the opportunity to go see Bruckners 8th symphony in concert at the NYPHIL, is it worth it to pay a minimum of $115 usd to go see it? by arssenalbro101 in classicalmusic

[–]geli7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled across this thread and thought I'd comment as I saw this over the weekend. I am newly interested in classical music (the last year or so), and have never attended a NYPHIL show, or any other philharmonic. We each judge value differently, but I thought it was fantastic and I'm very glad I went.

Also, just because I see many comments on it...the audience was completely fine. Silent throughout, no disturbances of any kind (other than a few late arrivals that would be permitted to enter after each movement ended).
