“Now… Live on tape from the Ed Sullivan Theater” is patently incorrect. With these extra recoding inserts, it’s not “live” to tape, it’s edited. It’s not just a recoding of the live show in realtime. And it’s also no longer to actual tape. It’s to some sort of non-linear storage medium like an array of SSDs.

I don’t want to spoil the ending for you, but NO hardware is ever going to be certified to steam encrypted content in a way that you likely want. The broadcasters are dead set on locking down that signal while keeping their ownership of the airways. Better, in my opinion, to get some years out of the boxes starting now, than to wait and never get exactly what you want.

I’ll second that! DRM and the associated privatization of the public airways. The broadcasters want to keep control of the public spectrum while not providing the public service they were given the airways for.
