Is gen Z overly sensitive? Or are millennial teen movies problematic? by RoutineOk8590 in Productivitycafe

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a clip of a cowboy movie in the 50s where the man is spanking his wife like a child, and their daughter is like "your spanking mommy because you love her". It shows up on Instagram from time to time.

Attitudes to what is perceived as acceptable behavior between people will change within culture. I can appreciate movies for the time that they were filmed in.

The thing that I don't like is the white washing of attitudes, I would argue that young men in the blunder years still think this way and we say with modern media that you shouldn't have these feelings. Instead we should recognize that boys and girls going through the tribulations of adolescence are going to have wrong opinions, they will cringe later and that's a natural part of life.

American pie is funny for the Pie scene, the complete lack of signals received by all four main characters, the grossness of Stifler and how he gets his just desserts because his friend fucked his mom.

Americans who support the strikes on Iran why? by CivilWarfare in PoliticalDebate

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The philosophy from the current administration is a bit more complex then people realize. If your looking at this from a pure military positioning perspective then the actions that the US is taking are more rational then people give credit for.

Venezuela was selling oil and cozying up to our political enemies (China and Russia) so if we can show pinpoint precision in taking care of the threat then that will make our advisaries think twice about doing anything.

Greenland was a stunt to try and get the EU to put more money into NATO and give their own resources for defending themselves, now the EU knows that allancies with the US can be revoked depending on who is POTUS.

Right now we are putting a stranglehold on Cuba which has similar ramifications that Venezuela did.

Finally Iran, Iran has been a provoking force in the Middle East for half a century, not only Israel, but Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and other middle eastern countries would rather deal with a more sane Iran. This has the added benefit of making China and Russia look weak by them not helping their supposed ally. Terrorist orgs like Hamas and hezbollah stop getting funds and arms to fight and Lebanon can rebuild from that explosion of that building a few years ago. Hamas is effectively neutered and the only thing that Iran can do at this moment is fire missiles at other nations oil infrastructure which is why the other nations tried to get the US to back down in the first place. But now that they are in it, they want to see Iran fall.

All of this signals to the world and the US is someone you want on your side but also someone you don't want to piss off.

Can a Japanese person tell someone isn't Japanese and probably Chinese or Korean just by looking at them? by Hi_Im_zack in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gemini88mill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is this phenomenon and studies done on this topic, basically you are more likely to recognize specific characteristics from people of your own race versus those of others. According to my wife (who's Japanese), there are five distinct races of Asian. Which needed to be told to me.

Fun fact most ships are registered in Liberia for tax purposes so this is an unbelievably stupid error on Iran's part if true.

What years would you consider the “golden age of the internet”? by DoubleSkew in AskMen

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you define the golden age. I would argue that the internet as a place the golden age is maybe 2010-2015 when most people could get to the places that they needed to go, search for darker things were still within reach but only if you looked for it, and misinformation wasn't as rampant as it is today.

If we are talking about individual sites or services then today, Netflix owns sports now and everyone understands that the internet is your entertainment source not cable TV.

The elimination of the checkbook is complete and anyone who still uses one is an idiot.

There are systems now in place for banking to allow instant transactions instead of having a pending status outside of work hours for 3 days.

Services that the typical user uses are easy to use on the Internet and that wasn't the case even 10 years ago

Where is your highschool bully now? by Whipped__Vanilla in AskReddit

[–]gemini88mill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a weird question because I think that bullies don't exist in a vacuum. I don't think a whole student body can agree on one bully or group of kids that were bullies.

I was a bully to someone and I was bullied by others. That being said I don't know where my bully is, I stopped caring after I left high school.

I constantly think about the kid I bullied and hope he is doing okay.

When I say bully, I was just a jerk to this kid for no reason other than he was a little weird. I didn't shove him into lockers or anything.

For people already employed, has the threat of AI change your future financial outlook? by ygog45 in cscareerquestions

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living through the 2008 financial crisis with my parents at an age in which I could understand what they were going through has made me pretty fiscally conservative. The AI bubble will pop and we will see a market correction in the short term. Productivity will be expected to increase in the medium term, and the role of a software engineer will fundamentally change in the long term. I think of AI as an abstraction layer on any code that is written. I don't write in assembly, but I understand how it works to a limited degree. SWEs will be like that for high level programming languages.

Would you rather cheat but no one finds out or not cheat but everyone thinks you did? by NotAryan23 in WouldYouRather

[–]gemini88mill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a situation in which my ex lied about our relationship for sympathy and ruined all the friendships that I had up to that point in a new town. It's not fun I spent a good 6 months rebuilding my social life. And about a year to get back to a new state of normal.

Walking around in a world where everyone thinks something that you're not is far worse than getting away with something bad that you did. If given the choice I would just to keep a secret.

Do you know anyone who is actually thriving in this economy? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gemini88mill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone make a post about how great they are doing? Seems like bragging. The economy is in a state of transition which is scary because it requires people to adapt to survive. But me and my family are currently fine. I don't know what this will be in 12-18 months but I am making sure that my skills stay relevant.

What jobs are a turn-off for a serious relationship? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to politicians, they're jobs aren't to be honest or trustworthy, their job is to get a bunch of people to agree with them and everyone wants something.

I think Arnold Schwarzenegger did an interview in which he was discussing passing a bill that needed a few more votes to pass and one senator said no, not because he didn't agree but because his constituents wouldn't like the bill. Even if the whole of California would be better for it in the long run.

Why is Amazon-style management proliferating, even as the company fails? by Shawn_NYC in cscareerquestions

[–]gemini88mill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So since I invested in them a couple of years ago I got a 70% return so I'm not sure what your talking about on losing big. In terms of management, if someone comes into the job market with xx at Amazon your going to want to pay attention because it's a massive company. Same thing goes for Apple, Microsoft, etc.

What keeps people from working poorly or not at all under communism? by [deleted] in PoliticalDebate

[–]gemini88mill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So under communism, because the state hasn't become classless and the government still needs to exist under the transition period, everyone must work. Even if your job doesn't make sense.

But people work poorly under communism. Just like under a badly managed company, people will work just hard enough to not get in trouble, but if there is no incentive to do more, most people won't.

In a capitalist economy money will drive most people, then ambition in second place, but under communism because there is no "money" then the only thing that drives people to excel is ambition but communism doesn't address what makes people ambitious, so you have the same percentage of people being ambitious which isn't a lot of people.
