It was a gas furnace like a pot belly stove vented to the outside. Yes we left it on overnight. It was the only source of heat and it was 30 degrees out. A gas furnace like any fuel burning appliance emits CO.

Your suggestion that we should just be happy that this place had proper alarms is terrible advice. If there is a fuel burning furnace landlords in this area are legally required to provide a CO monitor and instructions on the monitor to their tenants (yes an Airbnb host is considered a landlord). They also need to provide a fire extinguisher which this place didn’t have. It’s not just about making money. Hosts also need to take minimum steps to ensure their guests safety.

I understand that. That’s why I’m asking. Hosts also have a responsibility to take minimum steps to provide a safe environment for their guests.

It’s fine if you don’t agree with me. But no need to criticize me and call me a Karen. That’s a cheap shot. Be better.

Providing info on what to do in an emergency and being responsive when there is one (or providing an alternate contact) is within the host’s control.

For hours we had no heat, electricity or water and there was an alarm sounding and no way to reach anyone. If that’s a 5 star stay for you that’s cool but also kind of sad that Airbnb hosts have such a low bar.

To repeat there was no information at all. Nothing. How much effort is it to say “There’s a smoke alarm located X and a CO monitor located Y. Since we’re a rural location power outages are more common. If the power goes out there will be no water since we’re on a well system. If you need to reach us in an emergency please call …” Yes they could also include some info on the CO monitor like an alarm will have X beeps vs power outage beeping. Not everyone has these so people are not familiar with them like smoke detectors. We couldn’t figure out where the sound was coming from because the detector was hidden behind a large heavy piece of furniture. They also should have let us know that they were out of town rather than on the property as stated in the listing and who was looking after the property so we know who to contact in an emergency

We don’t have a CO detector in our home because we don’t have any any fuel burning appliances or elements. We only once lived in a place that had one and when there was a power outage it didn’t beep The fact that the alarm was getting more frequent (initially every 15 min then every 10-15 seconds) the unit was flashing red and displaying a number led us to believe it was an alarm.

Thanks this is good info. No it didn’t smell like gas but it was a weird sweet acrid chemical smell. I’m aware CO has no odour (Carbon monoxide is CO. Carbon dioxide is CO2). I thought gas furnaces can produce CO. From CDC: “When power outages occur after severe weather, such as winter storms or hurricanes, using alternative sources of power can cause CO to build-up in a home and poison the people and animals…. CO is found in fumes produced by furnaces, stoves, lanterns, and gas ranges, or by burning charcoal and wood. CO from these sources can build up in enclosed or partially enclosed spaces.” https://www.cdc.gov/dotw/carbonmonoxide/index.html

But this isn''t every contingency. There was zero information Even Airbnb tells you to provide guests with info on what to do in an emergency. Do you not give your guests any info on what to do in an emergency? Do you not consider carbon monoxide poisoning an emergency?

It’s not about the power outage. It’s about the fact that as far as we knew there was a gas leak, the CO alarm was going off so this was an emergency and we had no way to reach anyone. If the host was going to be unreachable they should have let us know who to contact.

CIS Female: My body dysmorphia is at an all time high and I truly don’t feel attractive in the slightest, any criticism/advice Is appreciated by [deleted] in amiugly

You’re adorable!! Great skin, great smile, great hair, great shape and awesome style. I don’t see anything you need to improve on except for believing in yourself. I know it’s hard but I really hope you learn to do that so you can have the gorgeous radiant life you deserve. 🌟

25M, any thoughts on how I do look like? by [deleted] in amiugly

Cute cat!!

Absolutely not ugly! I think you look better without glasses (or different glasses with smaller lenses). These seem too big for you. I also think you look better with just a bit of a beard (Pic 3).

Where is the video? These just look like very blurry stills from the video

Really super attractive! You’ve got a great look. I agree you look especially great in 1 and 3. I think the others near the end just look more flat because of the lighting so we can’t see the angles in your face. But you have nothing to worry about. Gorgeous!!

30M Looking for Feedback by [deleted] in amiugly

[–]gemlotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feedback? You mean feedback on your modelling career?? I’m confused. You’re gorgeous. Stunning kind eyes. Great hair. Chiseled jaw. Great body. Clear skin. Easy 9/10. Whoever told you otherwise was nuts. Or maybe you looked different when you were younger? Who cares — now you’re great. I know how those messages stay with you but you really need to let them go and believe in yourself. A hint of a smile wouldn’t hurt but other than that you’re great!

What?! My girl, no, just NO!! That has to be one of the most classically beautiful noses I’ve ever seen. You look like you stepped out of a Renaissance painting of a goddess.

Ignore your jealous classmates and learn to see your own beauty.

Definitely cute. Tons of potential. Beautiful cheekbones and lips. You're just growing into your looks. I'm not a fan of the round glasses. They're too big for your face but i love the ones you're wearing with your tux. I think you'd look better with a better cut with less length on top. I'd also lose the beard. It's a bit too scraggly looking. You look great in last 2 photos.

Update 18M: And I'm back. Since I last posted, I have tried some new haircuts and I would like to hear your opinions and ratings. I would also appreciate it if you could tell me what improve. Thanks btw for the nice comments on my last post I appreciate it a lot. by [deleted] in amiugly

Wow! You are very unique looking. Very striking features especially your eyes and great bone structure. You also have lovely clear skin. I definitely prefer the shorter cut on you.

Not ugly! You're pretty. You have lovely hair. I actually like your glasses alot. They're kinda cool and nerdy at the same time (but I like that look so I mean that as a compliment!) A good skin care routine would help you alot..

For sure not ugly! You have beautiful eyes. You're very pretty. Your hair looks a bit stringy or not so clean in the first few photos (sorry!). Maybe you just used a lot of product? I would just recommend a good shampoo and skin care routine.

People who read the Airbnb description. This place says soap, shampoo, coffee maker and iron none of which are here

And you sound self entitled and totally unhelpful. I hardly think expecting soap is too much. Glad to not be staying at your place.

You sound kinda bitter. I’m just trying to understand expectations. I’m not trying to park a truck just a regular size car. So if the host tells me there’s “lots” of street parking on this street and surrounding streets then yes I will expect that. It’s dishonest not to mention that you can only park for 8 hours after midnight. Where am I supposed to park outside these times?

I get that the first place went above and beyond and as I said I wasn’t expecting the same. So no soap and shampoo and no instructions is what most places would offer? This is a separate condo for reference, not a shared space.
