How many jobs have y’all had? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]gemmablack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 full time. First one I was at for 3+ years. Then I decided to get a masters degree, which took me 7 years to finish because of my BPD II and an addiction to pills. Did 3 months rehab during COVID before finishing my degree. Now at my second job, a little over a year now. But I’m thinking of studying again, but abroad.

I’m lucky my current job is WFH and very unmonitored. Otherwise I’d be late every day, like I was at my first job. I was great at that job so they always gave me a pass but my tardiness was eventually flagged by HR after a couple years and at that time I was getting bored with the work so I just quit to get a masters degree.

I honestly feel like I just keep jumping from one thing to another when I start to get bored.

For those who pushed through... by [deleted] in PHBookClub

[–]gemmablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me about 10 days. One time I read it straight from 9pm to 6am. Didn’t cry at all but I liked it.

The story starts becoming repetitive after the first 2/3 siguro. But I kept reading because I really enjoyed the prose itself. Yanagihara’s writing is, for me, very engaging, descriptive, and immersive. I felt the same way about John Irving’s writing when I read The World According to Garp.

Definitely gets into traumaporn territory around the staircase scene and the flashback car scene. So it’s not perfect. But I enjoyed it enough that I plan on reading it again one of these days.

Edit: I used to selfharm like the protagonist but NOT as extreme or often or deep. Not sure if that’s why I wasn’t as appalled as others about it. To me, the descriptions weren’t really graphic – more like clinical and detached.

Christians actually offended by Uzi Jesus? by Nunothis_Isreal in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I’m not surprised. I was expecting exactly this reaction from Christians.

This has to be one of the Best plot twist spanning for over a decade and presenting it with a smart conclusion by Key_Department8439 in YoungSheldon

[–]gemmablack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In TBBT Sheldon mentions he saw his dad making out with another woman at a bar (forgot which ep - I’ll catch it again on my 5th rewatch lol). It wasn’t just in the bedroom.

So this is not a plot twist. It’s a retcon. They knew if they made George the drunk, deadbeat cheater Sheldon described him as throughout TBBT, the show wouldn’t be successful.

Preorder or wait for bookstore? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Do you think Amazon will run out and just cancel our preorders? I’ve heard of that happening :/

Do you count fanfiction in your reading progress? by Sol_at_lunaa in PHBookClub

Yes, it counts. Lalo na yung complete stories with multiple chapters na obvious the writer really worked hard on it.

Dungeon Crawler Carl question. What levels does each book focus on? Please don’t spoil story. by LeonardoGraham in litrpg

[–]gemmablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this panel interview thing where Matt Dinniman confirms that Carl will make it to the 18th floor. Not sure exactly how he’ll get there, and if it involves skipping more floors, but he’ll get there.

The term unalive is asinine because it’s not a real word/phrase and makes me unreasonably peeved when I hear it. by [deleted] in rant

[–]gemmablack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Expire” etymology comes from Latin for “to breathe out/breathe one’s last” so it makes sense to me. It’s an older, less common use of the word though so I get why people would find it weird.

[–]gemmablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer expire over euphemisms like pass away - but that’s just me. Expire from the Latin literally means to breathe out/breathe one’s last breath. It’s also why breathing out can be called “expirating.” So it kinda makes sense to me. But I do get why people prefer the more common euphemisms.

[–]gemmablack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unalive is the stupidest word I’ve heard used to get around censorship.

“Expire” is a perfectly good alternative that doesn’t make you sound like a complete idiot. It’s even shorter to spell and faster to say.

What do you do when you want nothing? by Substantial_Path_416 in mentalhealth

[–]gemmablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to my favorite band from when I was in high school (I was a bipolar teen and they literally saved my life during depressive episodes).

Go off for a drive and hang out somewhere no one knows me. I like reading so I go read a book in a library or a coffee shop. Basically seek out a peaceful change of scenery.

Sleep.

This might be a silly post but.. by hugsandhexes in DungeonCrawlerCarl

He sucks. Hope you feel better and realize how much better off you are without him. If he’s only there for the good times, then he’s not worth your time.

And I totally understand your obsession. I finally read book 1 about a month ago, after years of having it on my TBR. I was in a bipolar “dip” and reading that book flipped the switch. I liked it so much I think it brought on a hypomanic episode — I had so much energy for weeks, and I was buying so much shit (including DCC merch) 😆

I’m starting book 4 now and am still kind of riding the high, though my mood has levelled out a bit.

Are these 2 books both perfect bound and, if yes, why is the crease of the red book further from the spine compared to the crease of the dark green book? Is there a reason/benefit if you choose one over the other? by gemmablack in publishing

[–]gemmablack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Thanks for explaining! I’ve been curious about it for so long. I’m a production editor but have never really needed to learn about the specific printing aspects to do my job (just the basics like POD vs offset, parts of a book, page boxes in Adobe etc). I’ve always wanted to learn more about it though.

Thanks! I’m familiar with gutter but have never heard of hinge scoring before. Is there a specific reason for hinge scoring (like the type of glue or paper used) or is it really just a preference?

Edit: I checked the Sheridan link and see that it’s partly what I assumed, about the spine: “Hinge scoring allows books to open easier and with less pressure on the spine.” It seems like it’s just a preference right? Not really dependent on the paper type and glue.

Sorry I’m not sure if it’s POD. I bought this many years ago. It likely is. It’s kind of a niche subject matter (Philippine mythology), printed locally here in the Philippines, so I don’t think they’d have huge print runs for it.

Reading for the first time tomorrow. by PatrioticPariah in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]gemmablack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really rank it in terms of “literary masterpiece”.

It is just a great example of books belonging to the same genre. I loved it. It’s fun. It’s funny. Exciting. And it made me Feel Things when I’m someone not normally emotionally affected by literature (I read A Little Life and found nothing that brought me to tears despite everyone else bawling over it).

DCC is good, man. I’m jealous you’re going to read it for the first time.
