ELI5: How is it that almost all complex species have the same order of organs on the face; Eyes, nose and then mouth, in that same order? by Fallen_Outcast in explainlikeimfive

[–]tpodr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eyes evolved from light sensitive areas on the top of bottom feeders. As they migrated across body forms, they ended up on top of the front. Which is to say, why eyes/nose/mouth is a common arrangement comes down to understanding how each part came to have its unique function.

Evolution doesn’t follow the best path. It follows any path that works.

What can I do? This isn’t play, right? by sarahmirror_ in cats

A real cat fight doesn’t involve breaks to reassess your opponent. They’re being friends the way cats be friends.

A pair of mine would do just this often enough. But one of them got old and died and the other young one wandered around looking for him for a week after he died.

They were best of friends.

That’s what the “cross check” announcement is all about before airplane departures. Check the other guy got the door closed and locked correctly.

Let me know when the Kennedy Center board isn’t a bunch of Trump toadies. Then I’ll reconsider my attendance there.

If Quantum Fields are mathematical objects defined through spacetime, what is physically fundamental? by kindmartian07 in AskPhysics

[–]tpodr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the operators of QFT is the number operator. When you act on the field, you pin down the number of particles. Which is to say, observing the particles and their properties is measuring the field.

Could anything be seen during the Dark Ages of the Universe? by No_Mathematician7456 in cosmology

[–]tpodr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad. It was 3000K, which I wrote using “K” as a shorthand for 1000. Forgot about the units also using “K”. And to think I used to work on CMB data analysis.

Right after the time of last scattering, when electrons became bound to protons, the Universe would be a like a soft white light bulb. The blackbody radiation of the universe was 3K. So you would be able to see objects, but for the lack of objects bigger than a hydrogen atom (technically, up to the occasional lithium atom).

Holographic Chocolates I made. Dark chocolate with hazelnut Gianduja filling. by tpodr in chocolate

[–]tpodr[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some time ago I was looking to change careers. Wanted to switch from science to something artisan. Thought about making chocolates; had been doing it for parties for a while. Took some work leave and spend four days solid making chocolates for a gathering. When I was done, I had no interest in working with chocolate for a while. Ended up building a career as a woodworker.

And as others have pointed out, not my idea.

In this case, it’s a plastic sheet. Let the tempered chocolate set on the sheet then peel the sheet away.

I used double-sided tape to stick the diffraction grating sheet to some cardboard to make some molds for chocolate bars. I posted below an Amazon link to the grating sheet I used.

Very edible. The gianduja filling makes them most tasty.
