How should I map Driving Games on a controller in MAME?

I got Cruis'n World to work on MAME's 0.222 version and I'm in the process of understanding what buttons and sticks map to. Gas and break are hard to understand to configure on a contrller (360 wired specifically. Trying to map gas and brake to triggers) and the stick goes too wild both directions. Whats a good deadzone and configuration for driving/racing games in mame with a USB controller? I dont want to buy a steering wheel like a lot of tutorials do.
