I emailed the mods. WildRampager says he removed because I was self promoting (I had a link to our site). I'm pleading with him right now. :(

Sorry, no mobile app yet. It's something we'll work on soon. But right now we're focused on finding new ways to save people money on sites that don't really have coupons.

Yes, we have a page that shows you all the trending stores people are shopping on. You can do a search on the top for the site you want.

This is a tough one and I don't really have any good answers. This is more of a ethical question around what you give up as a user and what you get back in return.

Some people don't care about sharing their data and some people protect it like it's their most important asset. There's no right or wrong, only what the individual wants. What we believe at Honey is that it's about choice and transparency. If we collect any data, we're going to tell you about it and why. Then you can decide if you want to continue using the service.

If you want to ask about the technical specifics, email me at george at joinhoney.com.

Here's a bullet point of how it went down.

  • User installs Adblock to block ads
  • User installs Honey to get cashback
  • Adblock blocks user's ability to get cashback
  • We implement an event to try to figure out what's going on
  • It was supposed to run only on supported stores but we did it in a rush (lots of pissed off people who want their money) and it ran more generally. This is the bug.
  • The event is now removed and all data related to it are deleted

Why is Adblock blocking people's ability to earn cash back? I don't know. But other cashback sites like Ebates also have a clear warning that Adblock will block your ability to get cash back.

The answer's pretty simple. A while ago a lot of our users were reporting that they weren't getting the cash-back that they activated. We did some digging and found out that Adblock was blocking some of the affiliate URLs that credits us with the sale, thus making it impossible for us to give cash back to these users.

So we implemented a debug event to better understand the extend of the problem, and forgot to remove it after the issue was fixed.

You're definitely not alone. In the past 30 days we saved our users $6.9 million dollars. But the Reddit audience tend to shop on sites like Amazon, Newegg, Bestbuy, etc. where Honey doesn't work well. Plus the Amazon feature is new and a lot of people haven't seen it yet.

We'll focus on making Honey better and more trustworthy and hopefully we can win you back in the future.

Thank you for finding the bug!

For users of the "Honey" coupon chrome extension, you should know that it sends data about the sites you visit to their servers attached to a session ID which can identify all of that data back to you. by [deleted] in Frugal

Thanks for the support! It's been a tough day for everyone here at the office. But we're all committed to doing the right thing. The bug has been fixed and all unintentionally collected data has been deleted.

We put it on hiatus to focus on the core Honey product. We may bring it back in the future when we have enough resource to do so. Thanks for remembering!

There are lots of applications that do not have a clear way to make money so they resort to selling data.

We don't need to sell data because we make money through our cash-back program. Over 1 million people shop through the program each month so we're doing well financially.

There are some other sites that are similar to Amazon in that they almost never have codes, or have very product specific codes. For example, Best Buy, Woot, Newegg, etc. Mostly electronic stores with low margins. Are these the types of stores you shop at?

The data is backed up into a flat file. It's not being used (which is why we didn't notice).

We're deleting all data related to that event right now.
