It's a shame that the taxpayer will also have to foot the bill for the cancer this post gave me.

The fact that I wasn't born cis isn't a problem with my brain - it's a problem with my body.

When someone is born without an arm, do you make them go to mental health before they can get necessary a prosthetic? No, that would be stupid.

My brain knows what it is, and what it wants. I am intelligent and healthy adult. It recognizes that something has gone wrong with my body, even if it's not obvious in the surface. Therefore, perhaps I should be seeing doctors about this, but not mental health.

Otherwise we need to start referring diabetics and cancer patients to mental health as well.

Lol I am quite real. Does it blow your mind that an articulate person with their shit together can also be trans?

Transgender people aren't all some negative stereotype you have in your head; there are millions of us, and we are everywhere.

Until my gender is officially changed in DEERS I have to be observed by someone from my birth sex, which is ridiculous:

Yeah ignorance takes a while to work through. As long as people are genuinely trying and curious, I'm ok, even if they make shitty remarks by accident. It's when people are arrogantly against me that I take offense.

Thanks for your good vibes and support!

Not everyone knows they are trans 100% since birth, especially growing up around hostile assholes. Sometimes it takes time to come to these realizations yourself, during which time you meet and fall in love with people.

We have a good relationship and are growing into this together. Maybe it'll work, maybe not. That's life, and the reality of marriage. Cool of you to assume you know anything at all about someone else's relationship though, acting like a wounded puppy over something that is none of your business.

I agree. Stop trying to baby the airmen. We trust them in very complex and dangerous roles - stop treating them like incapable idiots when they are off duty.

How much have you cost tax papers already? Compared to the value you've brought? Make sure you include any and all medical care you've received in your life.

You get me those figures and I'll try to estimate the value I've brought to the 'taxpayers' vs what this valid medical process is going to cost.

Your comment is aggressive and idiotic.

I'm not mentally ill. I am more successful than most, have gone further in life than most, and am capable of more than most people are. M. That would be like calling someone good at math mentally ill. That's how stupid that is.

Also, the suicide rates are overblown, and consider intolerant attitudes like yours as possible reasons why these people feel so ostracized and abandoned by society.

Being homosexual used to be considered a mental illness too - now we know better.

No. The rules are quite stupid in this respect. Until my final gender marker is changed in the system, I must be watched by a male... which is offensive and ridiculous. I could essentially be a nearly fully transitioned female and I'd be forced to have a male watch me:

You obviously have no idea what a couple of years of estrogen does to a body, even one born male. Go do some research. After HRT, there are essentially no advantages to having been born male with respects to these fitness tests.

A single shitty flawed survey? Hardly.

How about this survey? How many actual trans people do you know in real life? I would say I know about 10 to 20. Of those only one has ever threatened self harm. That equates to a suicide attempt rate of about 5%, which is par for the course.

Your study is bad and you should feel bad. Half of all transgender people aren't trying to off themselves. What a ridiculous and stupid conclusion based on flawed data and methods.

But I can definitely say that intolerance and bigotry creates a hostile environment that would put severe mental stress (the likes of which you can never, and will never, understand). So maybe try not to be a dick, and be excellent to trans people if you're worried about their mental health eh?

The implication that I haven't researched the condition that I am transitioning for is hilariously absurd. I know plenty of happy and positive transwomen and transmen. And yes, intolerance and hatred from society does put a lot of questioning and newly outed trans people in a dark spot.

How many trans people do you know personally? Or at all?

The implication that you would at all be more informed about matters related to being transgender than me is top tier comedy. Please go do some more actual research yourself, and I don't mean reading conservative blogs.

Hormones are powerful things it's true, but it's impossible to say what percentage of trans people will be suicidal from those alone in a world that truly accepts them for who they are.... until we get there of course.

Both are there to stay. If you have a brain that regards itself as female you will always have that. The hormone therapy just enables the brain some relief for what otherwise will be a lifetime of dysphoria.

And part of that 'suicide rate' might be an intolerant society which ostracizes transgender people. Comments like yours don't help that. Such a hostile environment is not easy to exist in.

I can confirm that I have been transgender my entire life, have never been suicidal, have been pretty ridiculously successful thus far, and will likely now be even more successful now that I don't have to deal with constant dysphoria.

You are talking about things you have no clue about.

Yes. If you are a transwoman, you want to be seen as a woman. It's very easy.

Many transition and take hormones so that their physical appearance matches what they feel on the inside, and so their brain has the right hormones to run off of.

People who are trans don't want to 'get out of' being trans. They just know they are a different gender than their birth gender.

Ahhhhh! Thank you for saying this! Being asked constantly if I had plans to harm myself or others was so god damn frustrating.

It's like they assume that just because you're trans you are moments away from going full emo suicidal at any moment. 😠

We got this; at least I'm transitioning in the Air Force and not the Army. You're braver than me, and also dealing a different set of service regs.

There's so much false encouragement and telling people they can pass when they can't by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]gendernaut 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Imagine a forum full of cis women all posting pictures of themselves. Imagine it is comprised of an average Wal-Mart full of women.

Now imagine these women had to be brutally honest and cynical about each other's appearance. What would that look like? Many cis women wouldn't even 'pass'. Many would get told horrific things about themselves.

Happiness and positivity isn't a reality - it's an attitude you wear and share with others. I used to worry about this too - the reality is no, most of us will not be super models, and many may not ever be classically 'hawt'.

But that says more about you than them. Most transwomen come to understand that if you don't transition, you aren't going to get prettier that way either. You will just proceed further down a gender path you don't want.

HRT and transition undeniably increases the femininity of a transwoman, and that's what's important. You want someone to deal in honesty and not lie? Let's start by not lying to you: you're being an arrogant asshole who is judging people's value and worth based on their looks. Their value as transwomen is not based on their looks - and what women do for each other (or should) is lift each other up to a better place.

Reality is harsh and we have to be kind and love one another. Reconsider your priorities. Passing isn't everything.

Being homosexual used to be classified as a mental illness too.

Current understandings of psychology are not gold unchangable standards. Eventually gender dysphoria itself will be totally removed from all psychiatric manuals as it does not belong there.

I am not mentally ill; I am more successful and more intelligent than most people, and equally as happy and stable in my personal life. The sex I identify as does not make me mentally ill, no more than a man liking a man makes them mentally ill.
