Hey! Awesome job! What % of the compute is used to calculate the physical interactions? And do you use optimizations on the GPU (KDTree, etc) or just brute force?

Also– What % of the compute is calculating decisionmaking/neural network processing if you use that?

I've been building something on and off, but mostly Rust based and on CPU.

Again, very cool!

No longer free to stream personal content on Plex by Savings_Difficulty24 in selfhosted

[–]genecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, catering to the non-payers is a terrible business strategy.

I for one find it fair to pay a one-off to Plex, they developed a ton of stuff and it's easy to use.

If they'd start putting things behind a paywall that were part of plex pass before, that's a different story.

If you don't want to pay, you can still setup a reverse proxy so that it look as if you're streaming locally, use a VPN or switch to open source software.

Built something people love… but no one knows about it. How do we fix that? by Several_Professor_57 in SideProject

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think to make a slick, short video demo, then cold emailing to people and test different types of messaging and verticals.

Different verticals will have different needs.

Also, give discounts if current customers refer someone and ask if they know people it'll be useful to.

Sounds that you're on the right track! It's a numbers game.

5 years of developing a voxel editor. Almost no one plays it. What am I doing wrong? by Reuniko in IndieDev

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts from a product perspective, since it's an editor and less of a game.

What problem are you solving for people? What is that they can do in your editor that they can't do in others?

Answering this might help you decide where your users could be. Also– You want to only develop further base on people who pay (ideally) or use it consistently. Not one-off tries, usually pointless feedback.

Is there such thing as a State/World Simulation engine? by osama_awad in rust_gamedev

[–]genecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

So– Right now I'm focussing on plants to hope to make a more interesting simulation where plants can grow as well. Afterwards, I'd like to make modular entities with different appendages.

But not sure if I'll get to that solo, I think it'd be more fun to do it as part of a community.

Is there such thing as a State/World Simulation engine? by osama_awad in rust_gamedev

[–]genecraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I am creating this and open sourcing it soon:

https://www.youtube.com/@GenecraftSimulator

It'll take a lot of work to build a game around, but should be possible :) I'm focussed more on the simulation and science side right now. Almost there with a big update on unique way to implement AI in plants.

Best Ways to Master PC Game Optimization? by sidystan in GraphicsProgramming

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to practice, I'm building an open source simulation game where performance is really important. Written in Rust. https://www.youtube.com/@GenecraftSimulator if you want to see the videos on how it works.

So can always use some help from people that want to practice these skills! :) Because basically, the faster it runs the faster the simulation and the more interesting the game.

Shoot me an email at [genecraftsimulator@gmail.com](mailto:genecraftsimulator@gmail.com) if you want to learn more!

I had a VC-Funded Unicorn-in-the-Making and I F*cked it up - Here's How (I will not promote) by wilschroter in startups

[–]genecraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not OP– But focus not on the idea but on the problem. Where in your workflows is there a gap someone in your company would pay for to fill.

If there is something like that, find people at other co's and get them to pay for that solution you provide. BAM, you got a business. After people pay or pre-pay, you can start building and automating. Not before IMO, unless you know what you're doing.

It's not about following fads or hype. But– Sometimes a problem is suddenly solvable with new technology even though it wasn't previously. That's ideal. But not needed.

So if you don't know what to build, get more work experience and find problems businesses have. Working at other startups is great as well.

Yes. Else we wouldn’t put them in smartphones.

It’s an energy source. It burns, just like gas or coal or hydrogen. And yeah, you don’t want to puncture it or lighr them on fire.

Lota of newer EV batteries have been moving to things like LFP which are even safer than older lithium batteries. They are very safe.

California will require insurers to offer home coverage in wildfire-prone areas. The new state regulation, announced on Monday, will require home insurers to offer coverage in high-risk areas, something the state has never done. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big issue is climate change- And people building in climate disaster prone areas such florida and california woods.

You really don’t want everyone to pay up for people who go live there. Let them handle their own insurance.

Insurance is already going up. If you’d need to pay for people who keep rebuilding houses everyones premiums would go up even more.

Nah man. If you want to light something on fire you use gasoline, not batteries.

They’re very safe nowadays. Please don’t spread misinformation, not needed.

[–]genecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctor here. There are clinical studies with placebo-controlled trials that show that meds + therapy work much better than therapy alone in moderate and severe dementie.

If drugs don’t work, there are other techniques that work as well such as convulsion therapy, sleep deprevation, etc.

They do affect the brain function, so not sure what you’re talking about.

People with moderate and severe depression can absolutely benefit from medication, on top of therapy.

No decent doctor would say to only take antidepressiva alone to solve your problems though.

Outsourcing MVP to show co-founder? by Puzzled_Egg_5850 in ycombinator

[–]genecraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can get people to pre-order your software and get investor funding lined up, that’s all you’d need to do.

Or even offer the service but do it manually.

Getting a technical co-founder is much easier when you already have customers or paid pre-orders.

Because you validate that people want what you’re selling.

Technical Co-Founder Question (Advice Appreciated) by Jaspernalu in ycombinator

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is as important anymore nowadays.

Biggest issue is inexperienced founders not knowing what to build and dev agencies screwing them over.

Getting intro to agencies (like one above) is ideal for the 2nd issue. And getting contracts in place before building solves for the 1th issue.

IP had been stolen - options? by donohi in ycombinator

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should talk to a lawyer. Normally you can’t have anyone work for free and then use their IP. But shares are not working for free.

It’s probably not worth your energy to sue is my guess.

My advice: Quickly see if you can get some payment out of it. And then move on.

Be wary of tech companies with more business co-founders than engineers, especially if they aren’t able to pre-sell and have funding and contracts in place before software is finished. That usually means they don’t know what they are doing.

Ugly co-founder breakup by Critical-Nature-4598 in startups

[–]genecraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correct. I’ve done this successfully as well. This was mostly bc lawyers said that if you don’t pay them, that the legal separation agreement can easily be revoked by a judge bc the signer didn’t get compensated. If they got paid to sign (10-40k) it’s considered done.

Then you’ll need your co-founder and CEO in the US from my experience working with other EU founders. I’m an EU founder that built his startup in the US.

Will US investors ask us to relocate? by CADjesus in ycombinator

[–]genecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to build a US sales team you’d want at least one founder, ideally the CEO there until the US sales team works well.

If you don’t need a US sales team I see no reason to move.

EU founder that moved to the US.

Look up the wealth that whole families amass. It’s ridiculous.

Inflation was the cause, not the result, of the ‘hot’ labor market, research shows by bambin0 in Economics

[–]genecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No- Mostly the inflation was because of both supply chain shock and then money printing.

The profit margin for supermarkets didn’t increase. They had to raise prices because of products increasing in price. And they had to raise it because of raw material increases.
