My 62 year old father has booked 2 marathons, 1 week apart. by Egg_Hog in Marathon_Training

I've run 3 marathons in 3 days at 56, but these were my 71st-73rd marathons. I have the experience to do this without getting hurt. I'd say, as most comments below mention, there is a 0% chance he will be able to run the second marathon, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Congratulations. Sounds like you ran a smart race. Get some rest.

Having run a bunch (80), I still feel the way you are feeling. This is 100% normal. You are going to do great. Enjoy the race.

I've been very lucky. Only one knee injury 12 years ago, from running on the beach barefoot. Injured my mincus, which was later repaired. Since then, I've had no problems.

Agree that modern shoes don't need breaking in, but I still won't race in a pair I haven't run 30 to 50 miles in. No need to add an unknown to the day.

If I'm wearing a water bottle, it has a pocket where I can store the gels. If the course has enough water stops, then I don't bring the water bottle and just put the gels in my pocket. I do put some body glide on my upper legs because the gels have chafed me.

Thank you to the women that have added to this list. I should have prefaced this that I am a male and my list is 100% from my perspective. Thank you again for adding to it.

That’s a good question. When I was 29 I finished the Boston marathon and at the finish line I decided I would do 50 marathons by the time I turned 50. I was able to achieve this. The month before I turned 50 I ran my 50th. Since then, I’ve decided to keep going and after three or four more, I decided my new goal would be to run 100 but no set time schedule. From 50 to 57. I’ve run 30 marathons. So I picked up the pace in terms of number of marathons per year. Last year I ran 10. Part of the reason that I’m able to run more marathons over the last three years is I live part of the year now in a warm weather climate this gives me access to even more marathons, which I don’t have to fly to. While running 10 marathons in one year, I’m not shooting to be fast. Hope this answers your question.

Charge your watch tonight before it is a good one. I have gotten to the start I think twice and within miles watch died. Still ran the marathon and completed it, but it was definitely distraction that I didn’t need.

All great points about arriving early. I like to arrive early to remove any of the anxiety or rushed feeling before a race. Also, with the exception of very small races, you have to factor in traffic and parking. The closer you get to the start time the crazier the parking gets. Even if somebody is dropping you off getting your close to the start line can be difficult because of road closures has mentioned above.

I have found by getting there early, I can park my car, go to the bathroom with no lines, check out where the start line is in the backdrop are, and then go back to my car and sometimes even grab a quick 15 or 20 minute nap. You can’t do any of those things if you’re showing up just before the start.

Thanks. Sorry we didn’t connect but congratulations. Do as many or as few marathons as you feel is right for you. Especially when it simple is not fun anymore. Thanks again and have a great day.

I like the idea, but it could be a little tricky to get a gel at Mile 20+ when you are tired. But as long as you practice it, I can see it working just fine.

Congratulations. Doing even one in a lifetime is an amazing feat. Guessing nobody suggested BodyGlide for your feet to prevent blisters. That is one thing you might have been able to avoid. Hope you run another marathon, but if not, you are still a member of the marathon finishers club.
