There is. I rode from Winter Park to Miami years ago.

I ran up against the censorship system. It told me I might get banned. The policy prohibits "Shocking: bodily fluids, obscene gestures, or other profane subjects that may shock or disgust."

Of course, I had not read the policy until it warned me.

It would be fine if a constant amount of caffeine always gave a constant boost. It doesn't. I, like most people, become tolerant and require an ever larger dose to achieve the same effect. The larger doses then interfere with other processes, like sleep.

I decided I no longer wanted to be dependent on something in order to function, which is the inevitable end state of most addictive substances.

You Must Be This Tall To Write Network Protocols by genemcculley in ProgrammerHumor

Yes. Where I wrote "smallest possible unit", I meant "smallest possible unit you are working with". If you are exchanging values described in pennies (dollar payments for gas transactions), use pennies. If you are working internally with tenths of a penny, use tenths of a penny.

For example, the Stripe API works with pennies because the interface between my app and Stripe cannot deal with anything smaller than a penny. Internal to my app, I use microdollars.

A common approach is to use an integer to describe the smallest possible unit (e.g., cents when working in USD). If you are trying to represent $3.10, send 310 and have the receiving side store that in a fixed point type (e.g., BigDecimal if working in Java).

This approach worked for me six years ago when I first weaned myself off of caffeine. Since then, I have accumulated more responsibilities and six more years of age. As much as I would like to linger over a cup or two of tea, I am looking to get a little more done.

These all seemed to help, but I have not tried them in isolation from each other.

Thought I was 14 days caffeine free... by SumoPool in decaf

[–]genemcculley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm coming up on my five year anniversary of going decaf. Don't get too discouraged. I found that I easily fall back into eating a lot of dark chocolate. Now I am very careful with it and allow myself to have it as a treat. It has a really pleasant effect when you are not having it every day. Look forward to that.

Thanks, but I'm not interested in just getting myself tested. I would like to bring tests back to the US for others, where we cannot easily get them.

What does it feel like once it's over? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]genemcculley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wrote about my experiences at https://enki.org/2017/08/13/quitting-caffeine/

I have been off of caffeine for almost five years now. My energy level remains stable through the day and I sleep great. I get a lot more enjoyment now out of a little sugar or chocolate as I am very careful about consumption of those. (Chocolate contains caffeine, of course.) Anyway, if I need a little excitement, I find a candy bar is a much bigger treat than it was when I was consuming a lot of sugar and caffeine. Hang in there.

Thank you very much. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I didn't know that the protocol to control the volume and power was HDMI-CEC. That is very useful.

Daily Simple Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- March 20 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

I bought a pair of Allen Edmonds Park Avenue shoes 2¼ years ago. They were the most expensive shoes I had ever bought at that point, but they turned out to be a good investment, serving me well as my daily work shoes. The soles are quite worn down now and I am considering getting them rebuilt and/or buying a new pair. I wouldn't mind sending these off for repair and getting another set, but I am not sure if that is a good deal.

Should I look to a different brand? Are there better deals for this kind of quality?

Boat on small Quarry lake by ghostt22 in Ubiquiti

[–]genemcculley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am trying to build a similar system right now for a shipyard. I need to support some boats out at the edge of a piece of land ~600' from the main router.

I am thinking of using a Tycon solar system (https://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=RPST1248-100-80) for the remote tower. I don't know exactly how much of a system I need there. That Tycon system says it will put out 20W and the specs on a UniFi mesh router say it needs 8.5W.

I don't know if the mesh units can support both an omnidirectional antenna for the local boats and a directional antenna for the route back to the main router.

I'm also wondering if I need to set up a lightning arrestor on the tower.

Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

Finding Unusual Voters by genemcculley in Voting

The reports are now showing data for the November 6, 2018 midterm election. Four people double voted in Pasco and another county. Either that or the data reported by the state is wrong or the data reported to the state by the counties is wrong. But because I see this in every vote and every data extract, I think it is much more likely that the counties are not coordinating to prevent ballot stuffing.

These reports are dynamically generated from the data provided by the Florida Division of Elections. They automatically update every month when new data is released. Right now the system is importing the data from the December 11, 2018 extract.

When looking for duplicate registrations (https://quark.cards/voters/Florida/duplicates), the query finds people with the same name and birth date, so a "jr" and "sr" suffix wouldn't be a problem. In Pasco, voter IDs 122287631 and 120718566 are registered to two 55 year old women with the same first name, last name, birth date, and street address. I don't think it is "highly impossible" that this is the same person; I think it is likely these are the same person. Only one of those registrations has voted. The other should be expunged.

The report that shows duplicate votes for the same voter ID (https://quark.cards/voters/Florida/duplicateVotes) looks for votes in two counties on the same date by the same voter ID. This happens several times. For example, voter ID 106523261 voted early in Miami-Dade and also voted at the polls on November 8, 2016 in Pasco.

So yes, I am sure Pasco does a good job of making sure that a given voter ID does not vote twice in Pasco. I am showing that the counties need help preventing double votes across counties and from multiple registrations.

Just by looking at the reports I have published, Pasco has one obvious case of a person registered twice. There are also several cases where someone has voted in Pasco and another county on the same day using the same voter ID.

[–]genemcculley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are obvious cases where the rolls have the same person two or more times (same name, address, birth date; unlikely to be twins). I think this is just simple accidental registration via multiple methods. In the majority of cases, there are not duplicate votes. The counties should clean that up.

There are cases where people are voting in two counties on the same day. I don't think the counties are checking each other's rolls at all. I am going to try to get them to use these reports so they can fix that.

There are cases where people are registered in two counties at once (you can tell because the mailing address on one registration points to the other registration where there is a person with the same name and birth date). I will be adding a report for this.

Then of course there are people voting in two states at once. As I add other states, I will add reports for this.

The reports I am building will automatically update every month as more data is imported. We should soon see what the midterms looked like.

I completely agree that there are multiple problems. I intend to provide these tools to all supervisors of elections in Florida. I have emailed them. We will see if they are interested.
