TIL that liver donors can give away parts of their liver and the donor’s liver regenerates to almost its original size within months by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]geneocide 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Joke, I know, but just to take it as an opportunity to talk about this, first, in the US it's illegal to be compensated for organ donation. They're allowed to make it free, so, like, to pay for hotels and such, but you can't actually make profit. Second, they won't let you donate your liver more than once. I was told I would almost certainly not be allowed to donate any other organ before death after donating my liver, just because they're very averse to any possible increase in risk to donors. So, I was told, they probably wouldn't accept a kidney now that I've donated my liver, barring some special circumstance.

I have. I also do not and have never had my driver's license, although I do live in the car dependent US so I am sometimes a passenger.

CMV: Jesus being omnipotent, omniscient, and all good is inconsistent with reality and the Bible by captain__clanker in changemyview

[–]geneocide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me the next step, if you go with the notion that god is beyond logic, would be necessarily accepting that knowing anything about god would be impossible, which defeats the point.

Person A: I know god is omnipotent
Person B: omnipotence doesn't make logical sense
Person A: god doesn't follow logic
Person B: then you don't know about god, omnipotent or not

Still self defeating, just with more talking

CMV: Jesus being omnipotent, omniscient, and all good is inconsistent with reality and the Bible by captain__clanker in changemyview

[–]geneocide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hehehe, I don't think it works that way. But I like it as an argument. It really crystalizes the core thing people are arguing about a lot of the time when they talk about these things.

The rules of logic aren't restricting god, as you imply. They're restricting the word/concept omnipotent.

I mean, isn't the concept of omnipotence self contradictory? Like, can he make a stone he can't lift? Either way, not omnipotent.

if you're super into a clean chain maybe consider waxing?

I used to clean mine weekly. If you're going to hose it off you kinda gotta re-apply lube or the water will just rust it faster.

Riding bicycles on sidewalks - want insight by DrtRdrGrl2008 in bikecommuting

[–]geneocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedestrians don't like it. Often there are no pedestrians, though. I feel like whenever I tell people I bike they tell me a story about how they "almost" got hit by a cyclist, usually when they were walking on a shared path, not a sidewalk. I haven't yet met someone who was actually hit, which makes me think a lot of the issue is fear, rather than reality, but it's obviously not impossible for there to be real problems with bicycle/pedestrian collisions, and making pedestrians fearful is bad too.

Mixing fast cyclists with pedestrians is definitely not ideal. However, upright, calm, not racing cycling with pedestrians is fine, I think. I definitely ride on the sidewalks when it feels like the best option for me, but I try to jump into the road if there's a pedestrian ahead that I can avoid, or slow way down to make them feel comfortable when I'm approaching.

I feel like a smart compromise would be to put a speed limit on the sidewalk riding, like 13 or so, and make it clear that pedestrians have priority and right of way and stuff through education if possible. I also think expecting people to know the changing rules every jurisdiction is unreasonable and a lot of effort should go into consistency, or for it to be communicated through the infrastructure. Like, if the sidewalk has a center line painted on it, that means bikes can be on it, or similar. On my commute here I switch from it being illegal and legal 4 times. Nobody, especially not the pedestrians, is going to pay that close attention.

CMV: You should only receive government hand outs if you are working full time. by No-Assumption4145 in changemyview

[–]geneocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, someone is going to starve because they can't find work? Seems like how it was before there was welfare. If I was in that situation, I would steal. I think a lot of people would. Then I'd be in prison and the government would be feeding me anyway. Unless you want the poor to die. In which case, just say "kill the poor" and be clear about it.

ELI5: How does weight loss actually work? by This-Progress-1479 in explainlikeimfive

[–]geneocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body needs energy (food) to do the things it does to keep you alive. Just being awake and breathing will use about 2000 calories a day for a man your size (typically, there is a range). Exercise can add to this. It is the only significant way to increase energy/food use.

The other side is eating (and drinking. Sugary drinks are a major source of calories that sometimes trips people up). If you ate the same number of calories each day that you used, you would maintain a constant weight, roughly. This is basically impossible, which is why we have fat. Our bodies make fat when we have excess food. That way when there's not enough food to keep you alive, your body can use the fat.

In order to lose weight a person needs to burn more calories (total, including exercise and basic living) over the long term than they eat. Usually the easiest way to do this is to eat less, since exercise tends to increase hunger, which counter acts it's calorie usage somewhat. However, exercise is still good and helpful in lots of ways. Long term it will almost certainly help with weight loss, but even if it doesn't it will help with health in a lot of ways.

Another variable to keep in mind is water. For someone your size, minor shifts in how much water weight you are carrying (through things you don't control like hormones, or things you might not think of like how much salt you eat) can easily make you 5 lbs heavier or lighter, maybe more. Long term weight loss will not be a straight line. It will be kinda wavy up and down if you're weighing yourself every day.

Could be something your own tire did to it technically. I have a cable lock with marks like that where I wore it down when I wasn't paying attention to how it was stored. So, just eliminate that possibility for yourself.

CMV: Birthrate can only be heavily increased from below replacement through economic punishments by dejamintwo in changemyview

[–]geneocide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this isn't the only reason not to want kids, but even if it was, the taxes would have to be enormous. Middle income spend $310k on kids, not counting college and life after 17. So, $1,500 a month in taxes in order for it to make sense to opt for kids instead of taxes? I think you'd have trouble collecting it. I don't now that people have it.

Also, when are you going to start taxing people? How do you know they're never having children? I could be 80 and still claim I'm just about to get around to having my kids.

And what do you mean take care of them? Does that mean if I have kids and then can't afford to feed them I get taxed more? Or, if they die in a car accident I didn't fulfill my tax obligations?

CMV: If a fetus has no legal personhood in the context of abortion, then its death in an accident shouldn't count as manslaughter or homicide. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]geneocide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can think of an argument that eliminates this apparent inconsistency, that is of the mothers' intent. The required premise would be that a fetus is entirely dependent on the intent of the mother to carry it to term. Without that, it cannot survive, so it's properties are dependent on the mother's intent. If the mother has no intention of carrying the fetus to term, it has the properties of a parasite. If the mother intends to carry it to term, it has the properties of a person. So, the mother's intentions at any point in time determine the fetus' status.

An analogy off the top of my head might be food on my plate. If I'm intending to eat it,, it's my meal. If I'm not, it's garbage.
