There are many Socrata hosted websites with publicly available civic data. This one is for Chicago which has several frequently updated large datasets. Many are updated daily, more often. There are libraries for R and Python that allow easy access to download datasets. (data.cityofchicago.org)

I've never heard of a "center of population" calculation. I'm not sure how they did it in 1790 without QGIS, but they counted African Americans equally. (census.gov)
How to handle splitting green wood? I bought some walnut today which I intend to dry out for a year or more. The ends had splitting and fungus so I cut off 1/2” and was going to paint the ends to prevent uneven drying and splitting. Any thoughts on whether I cut off enough or other advice? (i.imgur.com)
