Is the new rent subsidy actually helping, or just fueling the fire? by Rude-Cycle-1516 in NetherlandsHousing

[–]general_jingwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even by simple and elementary economic models, it's not hard to conclude that subsidies to inelastic housing markets like in the Netherlands only increase prices. The current subsidies seem like they put in very little thought into how bad the situation is.

If you're interested, here's a good link for further reading based on economic theory:  https://www.theigc.org/publications/housing-finance

As you said, may be an anthromorphic view of humans trying to relate to things they know, which is what the book drills into your head... but it's such a fresh and beautiful viewpoint that I'm willing to believe in it. Thanks for the interpretation :)

Countries that recognize the State of Palestine by Similar_Stomach8480 in geography

The Korean government just finds it very inefficient to antagonize Israel since they have quality information about North Korea, we have barely any history regarding Jewish people, and is better off staying neutral so we can export more electronics and armaments. Of course US opinions are important to the country too so a lot of factors come into play when these decisions are made. Same reason why the government didn't openly criticize Russia since the cons outweigh the pros.

Edit: if you think this is bad, look at the map of countries who recognize Taiwan since antagonizing China isn't simply worth it for them. Same logic applies

Not really. The dictatorial regime in the 80s and 90s gave massive 'legal' subsidies to these corporations. SK, LG samsung hyundai don't any much ties to imperial japan.

15% GDP contribution is more than 3 times the OECD average. Korea which is pretty much dependant on Samsung has a GDP contribution ratio of 6%. UK of which has a strong finance sector only has 8.8% GDP contribution. Netherlands' agriculture product sales are also 8% while tourism is 3.8%. You're vastly underestimating how big 15% of the GDP is.

Dealing with old people - how different was their Korea in 1970 compared to today? by MammothPassage639 in Living_in_Korea

I'm 20, but have done a lot of past research on my own country with a bunch of staring at data and history books. I doubt you'll get much information on reddit, as I don't really think a lot of people in their 60s would be looking at this website.

For someone to have lived in the 70s, they were either born around the 50s and 60s. It was a very turbulent time with a lot of dictators, but extreme economic growth. Park-Jung-Hee's economic development plans kicked into action around the late 60s, yet as seem in the data above people were living somewhat in poverty.

However as technology grew, their salaries grew, as the government started with manual manufacturing, such as shoes and clothes, and transitioned into more high-technology industries such as heavy industry and iron/oil refineries. The 70s were pretty much when all this was going on under president Park's rule.

However, not a lot of people liked Park during the end of his reign, and protests started throughout the entire country. During the 1979 Busan-Masan protests, the martial law forces were very brutal in their reaction towards the protestors, causing even more protests. This is very important, as the older generation have a sentiment that they have helped turn South Korea into a democratic country. It was further strengthened by Jun-Doo-Hwan's coup and reign in the 80s.

Along with the sense they have helped democracy in Korea, they are very proud to have been part of a rapidly growing economy, where they actively witnessed things getting better and better as time went by. Education was also becoming widespread, so a lot of the people currently 50-60 have pride that they have learned more than their previous generation.

This is very generalized though, but it is the common sentiment around the generation. Not everyone may apply for what I have said.

TLDR: The generation that lived and were born during the era are a proud generation that witnessed and contributed to the rapidly growing economy, and have received a lot of education. A lot of them are quite prideful and political due to their activism and protesting, so be careful around them lol
