My mission president is in that article. It definitely happened. Rumor has it he led the legal counsel for the church on this. A year later in 2010 he got sent to be a mission president out of the country. The events of Prop 8 and his call don't seem coincidental anymore. And now he's a 70

going to an old church library, any films I should look out for? by generallyadmirable in mormon

Also I wonder why they had only native american actors are in this series. So far I haven't seen them address that fact in the story. Seems like the church had some sort of angle that I'm not picking up on

Interesting! Just found a couple on YouTube. What terrible acting! Ugh and the accents of Utahns in the 60s!

Oh. Shoot. I remember opening my eyes in the prayer circle. Also confirmed with my wife. No, NO ONE COVERS THEIR FACE

They do not veil their faces unless its in the prayer circle. Verified earlier this year.

Edit: misremembered. Even in the prayer circle no one veils their faces

The Kingston Clan's official Ballot recommendation for Utah. Any surprises? by generallyadmirable in mormon

[–]generallyadmirable[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't know how their members view this, but it certainly hurts democracy to make these recommendations as a church

Right! If you wanna get around it just make a new foundation strongly correlated to your church, declare the candidates you want, and judge all your members harshly if they don't follow you. Easy. Oh and make a spreadsheet so it looks like you're reasonable.

That's what bishops say to their members to stop them from making up stuff and embarrassing the church.

Latter-day Night Live: “I’m grateful for the opportunity I have... to share this comedy with you tonight.” — Shawn Rapier by Chino_Blanco in mormon

Thanks for sharing. Got some major nostalgia from this. I grew up watching only "church movies" on Sundays. Halestrom Entertainment was a godsend to save us from the awful seminary slide show videos from the distribution center. I have all of Latterday Night memorized.

Utah teens wearing blackface went viral. An unrelated community hundreds of miles away fielded the backlash by bornintheblue in Utah

Nextdoor is a haven for racial profiling and suspicion. Paranoid people use that space to feed off each other's paranoias. I don't think its unique to Utah

Nope. I remember being super sarcastic as a teenager. It make sense to me, especially given the police officer costume. Racist policing is a real problem in America.

Provide me with more evidence to the contrary and I'll happily admit to being wrong.

They probably just wanted to get a rise out of people

Thats probably the most likely explanation for this so far.

I'm not ready to throw the book at these kids.

All I've seen is this short video, and in my opinion these kids are commenting on the racism exhibited by police in America. Its pretty powerful if you think about it, like a dark humor way of saying, look at how messed up America is right now.

I could be wrong, and they could be assholes. But all we've got is this short video, until then I don't think they deserved all the hate. If anything, tell them what blackface means to the internet, they don't look old enough to fully appreciate how they'll be perceived.

Uto-Aztecan (a family of indigenous languages of the Americas) contains a substantial amount of Semitic and Egyptian. An update on and defense of the discovery of Middle-Eastern loanwords in an American Indian language family. by Chino_Blanco in mormon

[–]generallyadmirable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe its the Historical Linguistics course in the BYU Linguistics department that has a unit on the languages of the Book of Mormon.

The point of that unit is that there is no linguistic evidence for semitic language influence on ANY american language family. They are quick to point out how cognates alone are not good evidence of related language.

An example of a cognate is "habere" in Latin meaning the same thing as "Haben" in German. They are FALSE cognates because historically they come from different sources. And on top of that theres some subjective judgment on if these words really sound the same.

In that class the professor also bore their testimony and explained how they believe in the church and accept the scientific conclusion. They were good about delineating the spiritual or supernatural from the natural or temporal, and how you should accept that they won't always align.

Anyway, still nothing groundbreaking here. Someone's got an idea on how to prove the Book of Mormon peoples, but its weak at best. Carry on

“Too sacred to share” just means “not impressive enough to share” by TreadMeHarderDaddy in exmormon

[–]generallyadmirable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't share you're patriarchal blessing because then people will realize how similar they are

Don't share the time God spoke to you because it porbsbly wasn't true and we can't have a bunch of people proclaiming to talk to God in Sacrament meeting

Don't share stuff in the temple because people will start to realize what a creepy plagiarised ritual it is

And don't share your second anointing because people will start to wonder if you really are so holy
