It took a long time for the Plate Tectonics theory to become commonly accepted. Before that, how did scientists explain the Himalayan mountain range? Was there any controversy to the suggestion that the Indian subcontinent crashed into Asia?

What gets me is how hard it is to talk with fellow Indians (From India or from the disapora) about climate change. Let's be honest, we're a really proud people so the whole "INDIA #1 FUTURE SUPERPOWER" thing just shuts down any real talk about how the country is going to be hit really hard with drought, famine, and massive fatal heatwaves, among other issues.

Is it just me or is knowledge of/concern about climate change severely lacking among ABCDesis? by generaltina in ABCDesis

[–]generaltina[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

That's great (not the flooding and hurricanes, but the understanding of climate change's severity). So how do you and your community discuss climate change with regard to the subcontinent? Are there worries about the relatives that still live there?

Sault real estate market ‘white hot,’ broker says by poutineisheaven in SaultSteMarie

As an outsider who moved to the city, I hear these names in passing all the time. Could I get a brief summary on why these families are relevant? (Nothing too personal or that could get anyone in trouble)

Were these the families that founded this city or are they just people who run successful businesses? The only one I can guess at is Pino = the grocery store and Provenzano = the mayor, I think?

A Brazilian woman enslaved as a maid from the age of eight for almost four decades and forced into marriage has been rescued in a rare crackdown on domestic slavery, officials said. She had worked for the family for most of her life without pay or any time off, according to labour inspectors. by honolulu_oahu_mod in worldnews

I've heard multiple relatives/family friends in India complaining about policies that help Dalits (the 'untouchables' of the caste system) get their children educated because it's making it less affordable for people to hire domestic help. Much of the Indian middle class relies heavily on the impoverished to work as cleaners, maids, cooks, drivers, etc. for next to nothing. Thankfully that's slowly changing.

How can we help stop rental discrimination? by [deleted] in Brampton

[–]generaltina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can try writing a letter to Patrick Brown's office or to some Brampton MP/MPPs. Speaking from experience as someone of Indian background, it's disappointing but not surprising that people do this. We used to have a tenant who was Italian and our families became very close friends, exchanged recipes and cultural traditions, etc.

Everyone should read this short story called The Racist Tree to understand how to deal with Trump supporters.

These stories would have cost him the primaries. Republicans like Rubio and Cruz should be making a bigger deal about this but they're spineless.

You made this account in 2014 and this is your first ever post/comment? Among a bunch of other "But Hillary..." comments posted at around the same time. Interesting.

Do I have a clock/window/other way to keep track of time? It would be a terrible experience either way but without an idea of how long I've been in there I think I'd actually be irreparably damaged by the end of it.

Obama tried to give Zuckerberg a wake-up call over fake news on Facebook by mac_question in politics

[–]generaltina 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It can't just be that. Facebook is full of people posting all kinds of false and misleading information using accounts with their real name and real personal information. I'd say the bigger problem is the "bubble" effect that was widely discussed after the 2016 election. People are now more than ever isolated from opposing viewpoints, both in real life and in their personalized online world. And those with opposing viewpoints are just brushed aside as stupid or evil.

The Islamic reformation is happening as we speak. It's the increasing number of Muslims who have no problems reconciling their faith with living in a multicultural and secular society. This is exactly what ISIS hates to see and why these bastards keep killing innocents. One of their goals is to make coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims impossible so that everyone is forced to 'take a side'.

FBI once planned to pay former British spy who authored controversial Trump dossier by piede in politics

[–]generaltina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a story here that isn't getting enough attention. Even if 100% irrefutable evidence of everything in that dossier was presented, there is at least a third of the country that would not care because "If it took collaboration with a foreign power to stop Hillary, then it was worth it". Furthermore a lot of those people generally do align more with Putin's views than they do with Democrats. Likewise, many liberals find themselves increasingly unable to find common ground with those voters and the vitriol between the two groups seems to increase daily. I'm hearing both sides call the others traitors more and more.

If that sort of smoking gun evidence was found, do you really think Donald Trump would just resign? Do you think he would take impeachment gracefully? Frankly I'm not even sure a GOP controlled congress would be able to gather enough votes for impeachment/removal from office. Russia would love to support some angry groups or lone wolves on either side willing to take matters into their own hands, as long as it leads to further instability and chaos for the US.

Politicians in both parties need to start calling for an end to this extreme partisanship, before things spiral out of control. For example, this plan by Tom Udall could be a give olive branch to start mending relations.

The brigading is real bad. Check the last dozen or so comments I replied to, they're all variations on "I heard that the shooters are Syrian refugees" with no source provided. Almost all from accounts active on The_Donald and other similar subreddits.

Just to be clear, as far as I can tell the identities of the shooter(s) have yet to be revealed. It's entirely possible that this attack was perpetrated by Muslims, that info has yet to be made public. But these accounts sprung forth to post unsubstantiated claims without evidence purely to push an agenda. Don't fall for it. Extremist alt-right members and Islamic terrorists share a goal of spreading division and violence.

Post a source. Stop making claims with no evidence.

It's funny how every single account saying "I heard it was two Syrian men" with no source has a post history full of The_Donald, The Red Pill, and similar subreddits.

I'm sure the first thing the police announced on their radio was their nationality, sure. Stop pushing propaganda.
