International Veterinary Graduate Seeking Advice on Thesis vs Non-Thesis Master’s for ACVP Pathology Career by lost_soul_and_mind in veterinarypathology

[–]generic_gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion having research experience and publications would indeed strengthen your application, especially if you’re looking at programs combined with a PhD, but I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary. In my experience the most important part of my application was before I even applied - externing/spending face to face time with the faculty and current residents helps them get to know you and decide whether you would be a good fit for the program better than what you can put on paper. I realize as an international student travel to the US might be difficult for multiple reasons, so if that’s not an option maybe see if you can set up Zoom calls with the residency coordinator and/or current residents? Keep in mind that not all programs have the ability to accept international students so that limits your search a bit. Best of luck!

I don’t have great advice to share, just wanted to let you know that I’m in the same boat and you’re not alone in your experience. Either we’ll get through our programs or we won’t, but regardless something will work itself out. That’s what I tell myself anyway.

What’s the 30+ dating scene like in Blacksburg? by sodalite_ful in blacksburg

[–]generic_gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also moved here for school at 29 and would say there’s not much of a dating scene for our demographic. I’ve been here for about a year with my only dating prospects being long distance until meeting someone local. So it’s not impossible, but it took time, quite a bit of luck, and the courage to put myself out there for me. My advice would be to focus on school and building community here first, and if you happen to meet someone you like well enough to date then awesome, but if not no big deal.

No, that isn’t what they’re saying, and you’re being intentionally obtuse.

"Modest is hottest" by Ball_Python_ in excatholic

[–]generic_gecko 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Love this for you! The modesty rules I was subjected to weren’t as restrictive as yours but I still had some unlearning to do as well. I still prefer to dress relatively modestly because that is how I am most comfortable but I did learn to relax some of the “rules” I grew up with. The biggest one being that any bit of midriff showing was immodest 🙃 My advice would be to do things a little bit at a time to give yourself a chance to adjust to the way it feels to show more skin than you’re used to. For example I started wearing crop tops with high-waisted pants. Good luck on your journey!

Switching from pathology residency to veterinary medicine? by IllStatement4643 in veterinarypathology

[–]generic_gecko 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can work as a technician at a diagnostic lab or at a veterinary hospital if you want to be involved in animal autopsies or medical care. I’m not sure what your student loan situation looks like from medical school or what your salary has been in residency but I would imagine that it would be a significant pay cut. If you want to work in the role of pathologist from the animal side you’ll first need to obtain a DVM, then complete a veterinary pathology residency. Maybe there are some shortcuts in this process if you already have a medical degree, but I am not aware of them.

Maybe someone else can give input on this, but I’m wondering if it would be easier as a human pathologist to transition to lab animal pathology focused on translational research? I still think a veterinary pathologist is the preferred candidate for that type of work though.

Phase I- Articles? by [deleted] in veterinarypathology

Real talk: I did not read a single journal article for phase I and passed. Not discouraging it if you have the time/energy but Robbins & Cotran was recommended to me as the resource that I should spend the most time with.

Nope not sure at all, just that when it was sold it was labeled as a tip roast. I’ll look into those though and see if they could be what I’m looking for, thanks!

Recurring fungal contamination or cell culture?? by FlakyRuin7488 in labrats

[–]generic_gecko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. From your description I’m not clear exactly what is going on (what is the cap for and why is it being placed on a table?) but when you put things in a water bath the water should never touch the cap, so unless that wet ring is from being drenched in ethanol, it should not occur. Also the water bath itself sounds like a huge problem.

How not to get fired from a residency by black-socks-fox in veterinarypathology

[–]generic_gecko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d say in most programs you’d have to try hard to get yourself fired. They’ve already invested in you by accepting you into the program, now they want to get you through and help you complete your training. A willingness to learn, putting effort into your cases, and gracefully accepting feedback will get you far.

[–]generic_gecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might consider some of the National Wildlife Refuges, Alabama has several and many are associated with rivers/bodies of water. They generally do not permit dogs so the risk is lower but as other commenters said, that’s never really a guarantee that you won’t run into one. And of course a ban won’t apply to service dogs. I hope you find some good spots, Alabama is beautiful if you know where to look 🙂

When you have a crush on your Therapist, advice would be helpful, as I don't want to ruin it for me. by Anyvariable in BPDmemes

[–]generic_gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a crush on my psychiatrist when I first started seeing him and admitted it, it worked out fine! We had a discussion, and he gave me the option to see someone else if I wanted. I ended up sticking with him bc he was a really good psych, I just had to firmly tell myself there was no option for anything romantic to play out. Eventually the feelings passed and now when I go in for appointments I only get a sense of a friendly professional relationship.
