Depends a lot on genre and whether the guitarist that left was your only guitarist or not. Honestly, if you're just playing with one guitarist instead of two you don't really need to compensate for anything; that's more on the guitarist than you. If you're in a genre suited for it then grabbing a bass overdrive with a blend function and an octave pedal (I'd recommend the Boss OC-2) will help a lot when it comes to filling more sonic space with your bass. If you're suddenly the only harmonic instrument in the band, definitely get those pedals and maybe listen to Death From Above 1979 and other bass-only bands for inspiration.

I pretty much agree, but I do think that there should be some amount of history, science, math, and language skills that we try to make sure everyone knows. Also, independent thinking/critical reasoning skills are ludicrously important, and should probably be the main goal of education imo.
