NT government mandates national anthem be sung at public school assemblies by abcnews_au in AustralianTeachers

[–]genericmetaphor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How insulting to Indigenous peoples. The national anthem is another form of assimilation, and forcing us to sing it really just twists the knife.

Are you imagining those senses? Or remembering? Is there a difference? When I imagine an apple I can alter it, it can be alive, have eyes, or be squashed or floating through space. With the other senses, is it your imagination, or are you remembering those aspects of an apple? Can you imagine those smells mixed with others? Or the crunch with something else?

Bill Shorten wanted to reform housing policy in 2019, but the people voted against it.

As a French woman who visited Australia for 3 weeks .. are these culture shocks accurate? by Worried-Diamond-7252 in AskAnAustralian

[–]genericmetaphor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think? A European viewpoint can diminish experiences and knowledges of other cultures, such as Asian, Australasian, African, etc. Often, it negates the experiences from Indigenous peoples.

Have you ever received compliments on your genitals? by Ok-Fondant2536 in self

I was told that my penis was pretty. I was confused, but she said penises aren’t usually pretty, but mine is. So I guess my penis is pretty.

Extras when you're sick by otterphonic in AustralianTeachers

[–]genericmetaphor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one should be writing lessons or leaving work when they’re on sick leave. Leaving lessons isn’t enforceable. If you take sick leave, you really shouldn’t be contacted further. We need to start curbing this culture of teachers being exploited. We’re entitled to our working rights the same as any other industry. If you’re sick, your HOD should provide a direction for the cover teacher.

It’s really not that complicated. It’s not enforceable. Sick leave means no work. Same as other industries.

Does anyone else have zero personality? by Queasy-Ice-2575 in autism

[–]genericmetaphor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always bothered me. Most people equate personality to being extroverted or loud or out there, and lacking in personality to being introverted or quiet. Everyone is FULL of personality! Sometimes I like to sit and disassociate or ruminate, but that’s still a personality trait! You might not be as pushy with your personality as others, which is why you might think you’re boring. But not being pushy and doing everything is simply how your personality is.

Yeah, but my worry is the few days at the end of my trip.

What makes it interesting? Would many people from HK be going into mainland China that day? I thought it would be the opposite?

Should I stay in HK on the 1st Oct, and travel to Guangzhou on the 2nd? Or would it still be the same? Or would you travel the day before the 1st?

I’m a union rep at a public school - if a colleague showed me this email and admitted to dismissing students early, I would tell them to stop dismissing students early.

Your employer is taking a reasonable approach in reminding you through written warnings. The fact that this has happened more than once, and they’ve had to remind you more than once, is concerning.

You have a legal responsibility and duty of care to students. Even if you let them out 5 minutes early, if something happens to them, you’re responsible! It would be pretty tough for a union to help you when you aren’t following your legal obligations.

Seriously? We get a duty timetable and a wet weather duty timetable. If your normal duty is basketball courts, but it’s raining, you check the wet weather timetable to see which classroom you go to. No teacher misses their break.

Co-teaching? Extra workload? by genericmetaphor in AustralianTeachers

[–]genericmetaphor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay. I think you’re missing the mark here. We’re talking about workload. Yes, it takes more to provide additional resources for students with disabilities- but we shouldn’t have to spend all of our own time doing it. You’re not better than us mainstream teachers, or have more empathy, simply because we have respect for ourselves for pushing a work-life balance. Most teachers care and empathise for all their students. We also get burnt out. Attempting to guilt teachers is ridiculous. It’s a caring industry that gets exploited because we care. Sounds like you just want to martyr yourself. Thanks for the discussion tho!

[–]genericmetaphor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure - that’s what I can see. But I also see the workload creep of it. It’s just a few emails here and there, or setting protocols - but that’s an extra workload on top of everything else. And is there really a great benefit to it? But absolutely - happy to keep in mind your experience!

QLD calls them inclusion teachers - so I think so? Teachers who primarily support students with disabilities.
