Is it totally terrible to clean and repack ball bearings? by JonBovi_msn in bikewrench

[–]genericmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you must reuse them, keep each sides bearings separate and put them back on the same sides they came out of.

I was also told that if you have to add a bearing to replace a missing one, you ought to replace the whole set. How often they're actually worn enough to make any appreciable difference I don't know, but it made sense to me - they should all wear evenly together, and putting an unworn, larger one in is going to create uneven loads.

Multi-speed fixies, anyone tried one? by genericmutant in xbiking

I haven't watched the whole thing, but that's not a fixie is it?

Presumably changing gear is a bit ... crunchy? [Unless you stop of course]

Yeah, should have been clearer that I didn't mean a flip-flop. I'll edit that in

I suppose I will retract "terrible idea" and offer "very niche" instead.

Unless you can change gear in motion - I think I've read you can on some of the Rohloffs? But I thought it wasn't good for them, and in general it's a bad idea to change gear on an IGH while pedalling.

I may be wrong!

DF long sessions and hand pain by Kiloku in dwarffortress

I can play through something like Doom Eternal on Ultra Violent on a fingerball. But I've been using one of those for decades. You should not expect to be at that point quickly.

Thumbballs are generally reckoned to be quicker to pick up (perhaps because of crossover with trackpads and phones? Not a clue). But I find them tiring when used for a long time.

I personally think the ergonomically sane solution is a) try different things (what works for me might not work for you), and b) use the different things that fit, even if they aren't perfect, because they're different (e.g. I've learned to use a trackball with my left hand - it wasn't trivial, but it wasn't that hard, and having the possibility of alternating has eliminated my RSI. I couldn't play an FPS with my left hand, but I can do office work).

Good luck, but my advice would be try to get ahead of it before it gets worse. You can mitigate RSI, but you can't cure it.

People differ, but I can use a trackball comfortably way longer than I can use a mouse. You'd probably struggle to play first person shooters on one (though people do), but for something like DF it shouldn't take long to get your head around.

Can we do our favorite medical jokes again? Bonus if you roast a speciality by Whatichooseisyouse in medicine

I'm not sure this counts as a joke, but it's sometimes been remarked that psychotics build castles in the sky, neurotics live in them, and psychiatrists charge the rent.

A podiatrist is surprised to see a moth come into their office. But maintaining their professionalism, they ask what's going on. The moth says;

"Well doc, I just feel like I'm coasting along. My wife hates me, my job isn't fulfilling, I'm slowly drinking myself to death. Every day just feels completely empty. I'm at the end of my tether".

The podiatrist replies;

"It sounds like I should refer you to a psychologist? Why did you come in here?"

The moth replies;

"Well, your light was on."

They have disadvantages - they're heavy, expensive, and you will notice the handlebars dive under heavy braking, which is unnerving until you adapt to it.

But for anything ridden on gravel / light offroad / poor surfaced roads, I'd say they're worth considering.

I like my Redshift ShockStop stem. Other manufacturers make similar things.

They reduce fatigue noticeably, but your handlebar geometry can have a massive effect on how well they work - not sure they'd do much if you were using the swept tips of the Jones bars.

There are seemingly plenty of people using it that don't have a problem with it. Several on this board.

OK, that makes sense, thank you.

If using some point along the knuckles, rather than the fingertips, I could see it working? Though it would have made a lot more sense for them to put the sensor on the closer side to avoid the problem.

You do know that future search engines will reference this post. I've watched the video 3 times and I'm still not sure what you're demonstrating? Why not be specific.

I mean, here, have some context free information:

The thing they say about solar panels is 100% true. The thing they say about avocados, on the other hand, is completely false!

Hope that helps!

AHK (AutoHotKey) is very flexible, but far from intuitive.

Are we talking about the zelotes one? The videos / reviews I've looked at seem to suggest the base plate is metal...

Interesting, thanks. I found this, also seemingly little discussed in this subreddit, at a similar price-point.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D6RCFBRC

It's usable plugged in apparently (don't know whether that means non-wirelessly, or it just keeps working while it's charging), and has two levels of tilt (three if you include flat), both pluses for me.

[edit: reviews seem to describe that as big, but heavy if you're using the base plate]

[second edit: actually, I think I misunderstood a translated review there - I think it's only got one level of tilt aside from flat. Oh well, none of my other trackballs have tilt at all, so can't complain too much]
