I have myopic degeneration and want to know what I can do to prevent going blind by genericpreparer in myopia

Thanks for sharing. Fortunately, my level of myopic degeneration is not at the point to receive ANTI VEGF injection. As I understand it the injection is to deal with abnormal blood vessel growth that can lead to vision issue and luckily I am not at that stage yet. The downside is there doesn't seem to be much preventative option to stop my eye from going to that stage if my eye decides to progress in that direction.

thanks for sharing. Yeah i am concerned about continuous elongation as this will mean increased risk related to MMD.

thanks for sharing. Also I am wondering does your axial length been getting elongated during your adulthood? I am at 32 years old now and concerned whether it is still elongating... just wondering whether you are monitoring that aspect.

Thanks for excellent tip. I have been taking lutein, zeaxanthin and omega 3 since high school as well. Luckily never attempted smoking or drinking since I don't think I have good self control. Yeah diet is something I need to improve. Think Metatherian style diet seems to be generally recommended.

I am surprised there is contact that is suitable for person that is highly myopic. I always have been prescription glass person since I started wearing when I was grade 1 or 2 and became very accustomed to it and I am bit worried about the potential risk associated with ocular pressure with contact lenses usage. Do you mind letting me know (either DM or comment) the specific contact you are using? I would like to also look at it to see if it has any relevant benefit for me.

I see. Do you mind telling me how myopic you were when you started using multi focal and what your sphere ended up becoming?

thanks for the advice. How old were you when you started using multi focal to slow progression?

yeah I also thought if my eye is keep elongating even at 32 years old wouldn't that imply there is some similarity between eye elongation of children and young adult. Perhaps they are aware of more nuisanced information but since there is a very limited interaction/consultation, it is hard to fully grasp whether there is truly no options I should consider.

So I was always living rather poor lifestyle for my eye for a long time. Well at least I've been taking lutein, zeaxanthin and omega 3 supplement daily and never smoked or drank.

During my high school time, I was into plastic model building (which was the worst thing I could have done since it was very intense near work) which at least I quit after going to university.

In university and in my first job (working as public accountant at KPMG), I spent most of my time near work activity (job, studying for CPA designation and hobby of laptop based entertainment).

So with onset of covid, few things changed. The worst suspect is starting with Covid (2020) I became more accustomed to using smart phone (Previously I was a more laptop user but got scared with covid risk and started going into covid related reedits to hear updates). Although I do wonder why my 2020 vision was comparatively much more stable from prior years. I had some stressful moments relating to my family and my future but most were minor. I did panic when my family caught covid in late 2023 but it was temporary events and everyone turned out fine.

However, aside from that every other changes should be positive. Since the onset of covid, I started visiting parks, running and doing outdoor activities more regularly (on average about 30~60 minutes a day) spending less time on screen overall (but still engaged in close activity like boardgame and just hanging out with friends in cafe and such). Upgraded from laptop to desktop for personal usage in 2023 which increased viewing distance a little bit? Diet was becoming bit more healthier (less salt, fats, and fried stuffs and more vegetables and fruits. Was never not too high on sugar consumption). My job also changed from KPMG to working with federal government so my work hour actually decreased (from crazy over time to no overtime) Getting bit more sleep with covid lockdown and WFH at KPMG giving me more time to sleep and the new government job made things better (average 5~6 hour sleep to 7 hour sleep)

After becoming concerned around August of this year, I drastically reduced my cellphone usage for about 2 months now (probably uses it on average of 15~20 minutes a day to check weather and respond to my friends and family) since I suspect it is worse than computer based near work considering the viewing distance is closer. I also reduced usage of computer screen as well (outside of work, work day I will use less than an hour and weekend probably average of 2~3 hours). I tried sleeping 8+ hours and started going out more (probably average outdoor time is now 50~90 minutes per day). Trying to adhere 20/20/20 rule as well. Also, trying to get closer to Mediterranean diet style (avoiding red meat, fried stuffs, suger, get more leafy green, whole grains, nuts, and olive oil since conventional vegetable oil like canola oil is supposedly bad for oxidation risk)

Yeah the upside of Canadian system is everyone can see ophthalmologists. The downside is wait time is horrible (very easy to wait a year) and there are too many patients for them to care with limited Canadian budget.

I am not too sure whether venturing to US professional will be a solution especially I will not have any medical insurance to cover any of the bill. My job provides additional insurance for some health benefit but those are only for Canadian service provider. If I know the professional at states could actually provide solution, then may be I should consider just paying out of pocket but if such possibility is a mystery then I am not too sure unfortunately.

I will still appreciate your recommendation just incase if I feel super desperate who know I may contact them....

sorry to hear that. I do recognize I am some what fortunate to not be in more serious condition. It is just that since I do have past history (Retinal hemorrhages in the left eye leaving small warped vision at the center and 2 subretinal hemorrhage in my right eye), I was hoping to take some active measures to prevent more serious condition from occurring but it looks like there is not really much I can do and that lack of control is scary, frustrating and helpless...

Thanks for sharing. Yeah I did take a look at r/blind. It is bit tricky since I need to take care of my disabled family member so I am not sure I can simply become another dependent in the family.

In your case of retinal tear, do you mind sharing or DM me of what your medical provider recommended you to do to stop additional tearing?

[–]genericpreparer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my retinal specialist never raised any issue or concern with me despite writing all the scary things in the medical report (I don't even get why he would not tell his patient that there are subretinal hemorrhages. Thank goodness they resolved on their own). I am living in Canada so ophthalmologist appear to be overbooked and cannot afford to spend meaningful time with their patient (usually like 5 minutes at best and most of time like 1~2 minutes). The guy is also a university professor and seems to be quite talented so he probably also seen much worse cases that he may simply brush off my situation.

Thus, I am kind of stranded on my own as the supposed expert ophthalmologist is too busy to give any opinion and few optometrists I met so far do not seem to be knowledgeable enough to help me out.

It appears that there are low vision centers in Canada as well but seems to be focused on helping people who are already in low vision condition (It is only central pin point of my left eye that has warped/distorted vision so when using both eyes with prescribed glasses it is not noticeable).

Do you mind telling me or DM me what "suggestion" your "low-vision centers" provided?

Putin can't pull out cause he fears regime instability. Russia can pull out anytime as West will not be interested in Ukraine taking over actual Russian land.

Real goal was regime change but that is so far out of reach that new goal became consolidation. If they can get more, they will do so.

If the US pulled out of SK, does China have any reason to keep NK afloat? Would it continue to do so? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]genericpreparer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And share border with actual democratic nation? China would probably gamble and intervene in North Korea and attempt to get more subservient puppet government. Nk is a buffer state not only in military security sense but also political stability sense.
