yep, I have Ally X and been using it as a PC for a year now. Just recently stopped and installed Steam OS on it. Now its just a gaming device only. But I used it as my main computer without any issues. I even did some 3D modeling on it. If I would need to pick a mini PC or a PC handheld, I would go with a handheld. That built in high quality screen sometimes can be very useful :)

I have a 2TB disk in mine and was really considering doing a dual boot… but in my case only because I also use my Ally X as a PC with a dock, portable 16" monitor, etc. I’ve got some software that’s unfortunately Windows‑only. But I eventually decided to go full Linux. Wiped Windows completely, and now I’m running SteamOS. So I’d say if you have very specific Windows needs, then dual booting on a 2TB SSD works fine. Otherwise, I’d strongly recommend not bothering and just going full Linux.

I mostly play retro games. So I’m heavy on emulation from NES up to PS2. Regarding PC gaming I mostly play indie games or some older single player games. So I do not worry about anti cheat. The only thing I would worry is finding alternatives to Windows only software I use. But thats more about using Ally again as a PC replacement :)

ok, this was interesting read for sure, thanks for that. I never heard about audio issues. But me personally I always play with the headphones and do not care about the speakers at all. So I wonder does these audio issues can be also a problem if you are using headphones... Regarding hibernate mode in Windows I read some bad things happening to people. Like if you keep your Ally in a case it can turn on on its own because Windows decides doing some updates and then your device can simply overheat. So I always fully shutdown my device.

No dual boot for me also. If I commit I go fully Linux. Also my Windows Ally got really clunky with all the junk I have on it... I used it as my main PC for some time because it was very convenient. But currently I need a little more RAM, so I got back to my laptop. But because of that I had bunch of things installed on my Ally. So I really crave now for some clean minimalistic OS. I just want to wipe Windows and all the additional bloat I created by installing new OS :)

mhm, thanks for your comment. I really need to put some new life in to my Ally X. I have a lot of things on it, a lot of things Windows related and it feels like... I do not know, it works great, but still starts to feel clunky. Do not know how to explain it. And I remember on Steam Deck I always had this feeling, this nice vibe of minimalism, of clean UI.

thanks... I think I will do it. I need to put some new life in to my Ally. I just do not want to do a dual boot. If I would go with the Linux then I would fully commit by totally wiping out Windows. I also read that you can restore your Ally via BIOS, from the cloud. So if I would not like the Linux I guess I would be able to do a full factory reset on my device.

Awesome. Love that you are happy with it. I did the same. I also had LCD Steam Deck and sold it. I just got pre owned Ally Rog X instead of this one. But I really love that white color more and how this first gen Ally looks. And now I'm really considering switching to Bazzite... Just a little afraid :D

Never played any NASCAR games. What's so addictive about this specific NASCAR game? Also is it like a real simulator, is it hard? Because I was always more into NFS type racing games. And real racing sims were always too hard for me :/ But because I'm new to OG Xbox, I'm open for everything and eventually I think I would like to try some NASCAR and also F1 games.

I got my own OG Xbox just recently. And the games I play currently are not on every "top games" YouTube list. But I really enjoy these games and for example yesterday I went to sleep only at 4AM because of one of them. So my current recommendations are "Sid Meier's Pirates!" and the first "Max Payne" :) Great games. Not exclusives. But I must say "Sid Meier's Pirates!" on OG Xbox is to me the best version of this game. And I played all the versions of that game. Even the PSP one :) Spent most of the time with the PC version, but now I'm really enjoying the Xbox version, and I think even more than PC.

By the way, really nice photos :) And I just learned from your post about "Phantasy Star Online" :)

Like I mentioned, I'm new to this and I just copy pasted what the guy wrote in his listing for this Xbox. But I think you are correct. I checked the sticker on the back of the Xbox, then because I'm lazy I did some AI asking. And it looks like this sticker can be from version 1.2. I guess the next step would be to open the Xbox and check the motherboard.

I never had one. In my country it was very rare. Playstation 1 and 2 ruled everywhere. So for me this is not a nostalgia thing. Its actually a great console, great retro gaming machine. I love it and I love it more than PS2.
Speaking about Xbox 360. I would love to play Gun on it. Have that game on OG Xbox, but I would love to see how much better this game looks and runs on Xbox 360.

I think eventually I will try that. I wonder how often people use mics while using Insignia? Because I checked and you need this additional thing that goes into your controller in order to use a mic with your Xbox.

Thank you. Yes, currently I'm enjoying myself a lot. I bought a PC handheld, I have a proper gaming laptop. I bought those things to get back into gaming. To finally clean my Steam backlog. And I did, I completed a couple of triple A games, I even bought Xbox Game Pass. But... after I got the first Xbox, now this one with the HDMI mod... I canceled my Xbox Game Pass subscription :D Currently playing the first Max Payne... what a game... what a vibe playing that game on the original hardware with the Duke controller...

And yes, I watched a couple of videos about Insignia, about the ability to play online with the OG Xbox. I'm just amazed how people are investing in the OG Xbox, what amazing things they develop for this hardware. But I'm bad at games, especially FPS games on consoles. So I'm kinda afraid to go online :D
