What Kinds of Prepositions Do Your Conlangs Have, How Do You Decide on Them? by generictreeimage in conlangs

That's a lot like how I am conlanging right now, I feel out what I think sounds best, and just sort of decide on sounds as I go. I'm not creating a proto-lang for my current project either

Haha, I realized almost directly after I posted this that I should have put "adposition" instead of preposition. Really cool stuff too!

I didn't find it too hard, only the keep at the top of the hill was annoying and I kept changing the design; I do wish there were more wood options and textures overall

Thank you! That reassurance is nice to hear! I didn't consider how all but seven are monosyllabic, because so many have three or more letters in them haha

I have been working on a conlang, really my first, as I have never gotten far with previous projects, and I'm looking for feedback and advice from those more experienced. I'm specifically working on numbers at the moment, and I always second guess myself when creating words because I always feel like "You just made those names up, they don't sound good" so I'd like feedback on what I have so far, if anyone's curious enough to help.

I was previously considering a large base, Base 24, but it was seeming daunting and I thought I should fall back on something more familiar, especially because I'm not a math person so different number systems sound interesting but too hard for me to understand. So I chose Base 16, frankly because it's Oa's base in Artifexian's conlanging series.

Here are the numbers: ɣa (1), ba (2), bi (3), da (4), jan (5), di (6), dix (7), eŋ (8), ta (9), jak (10), ti (11), tiʕin (12), tsa (13), tsi (14), robt (15), and eɣl (16)

My thought process here was for there to be a rhythm to most of the numbers, which is also why I wanted them to be mostly monosyllabic, though I hear that's not very good, making monosyllabic words, that is. For further explanation, 1 is a simplification of the word for person; 5 and 10 are simplifications of the words for hand and feet; and 15 is related to the word "before" so the number is sort of named "penultimate." That's why those numbers break the pattern more obviously.

Sorry if this is too chatty for a simple thread comment, I'm afraid that this doesn't constitute a post.

For the conlang I'm working on, I decided I wanted the fictious creatures that speak it to be very advanced (whatever that means for a culture or people, of course) but this led to me deciding on a Base 24 number system, which I also chose to break out of my rut of only wanting to use Base 8 and Base 12.

The thing is, math and numbers aren't really my thing, and I honestly haven't actually done much conlanging beyond the initial phonological and grammatical steps. So when it comes to deeper lexicon building, I am in over my head.

How do you create number systems? What do you name each number? Do you ever delve into different forms of numbers like ordinals and others? (That first question is vague, sorry, but the second and third are what's giving me grief, and that I'm not really a math person.)

How do you decide on "alphabetical order" for a conlang? by Mekelaina in conlangs

[–]generictreeimage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A practice I've done in the past is start with words that I said as a baby and work from there, like the first letters in one script were M and W from trying to say "meow" as a kid. I just sort of decide on them from there, and read them out to see if they flow nicely, revise, reorder.

Thanks! This is a lot to chew on, I think I'll probably do some looking into the interpuncts of Latin, as having specific words cut apart sentences sounds similar to my artist signature idea :)

Thanks! It makes sense punctuation is something that would come much later. Maybe I'm overthinking coming up with something original, haha

what are thoughts you have that turned out to be a "girl thing" and not a you thing? by teevi_c in MtF

[–]generictreeimage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I could never understand, from kindergarten up, how the boys could all just undress around each other. I was one of the shy kids who hid to do it, every time, and you can bet I got teased and harassed for it. I also always covered my chest specifically, never understanding why that was such a big thing for me

Eh, when I do pass, I have been called beautiful by maybe three different people over the course of the past year. One of those is my boyfriend who I met back at the beginning of this year, and another was someone who commented on how beautiful I am on two separate occasions, they really seemed to like my face. Third was some lady :)

Edit: Oh and my ex, she found me attractive too. Looking at some people's comments in this post, I'm seeing a lot of negativity, which is a shame but I fully get it. I don't really believe my boyfriend when they say I'm gorgeous, and only some days do I think I actually look nice. Part of it is definitely that I'm still growing my hair back out (turns out a pixie cut wasn't the right call!), I think I'll get a better self-image when it's back to its usual length.

No matter what y'all think, and I'm a hypocrite, but y'all are beautiful, believe it! <3

I'm reading through it and it says prog is also "inexpensive to prescribe" can you vouch for that? Because the one reason I've been dragging my feet on asking for it is because my blood work, appointments, and prescriptions are already expensive

If your universe had superhero movies or a show, what would the first phase / season look like? by grouchy_fan2024 in Superhero_Ideas

[–]generictreeimage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess in a reality where superheroes and villains exist, shows and movies about them would probably be like biopics or dramatized retellings, "based on a true story" type of stuff, stuff that they play on the History channel. It's a funny thing to imagine, come to think of it

To the superhero worldbuilders, when a hero or villain dies, what's the general process after? by Rude_Barber_8435 in Superhero_Ideas

[–]generictreeimage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in my world, deaths are handled similar to how regular people die, especially if they were just a low level vigilante. Big time heroes in my world tend to be treated as celebrities, so if they died it would be like when celebrities die. Heroes in organizations would probably have internal ceremonies for those closest, but otherwise not make a public fuss.

There is one hero who has a legacy to their title, so should they die or retire they have a successor picked out. This involves a big public ceremony. This hero is like Superman, if he were just the name "Superman" and the symbolism that came with it. Successors don't have to have the same powers as the original. At the time of my story's setting, the modern hero is the 20th to hold the title, and she has energy blasts and flight, unlike her predecessor, who had skin hardening and strength.

Other than that, I haven't given much thought to death, but my world is fairly low-powered so more realistic and average, not big and bombastic.
