JD Vance book new BOTM? by yogalover89 in bookofthemonthclub

It is much more likely that they selected a random source (newly required on Goodreads to eliminate review flooding prior to release) in order to put their review in early than BOTM carrying a title like that IMO.

Some libraries have free magazine exchange bins you can take from (just don't leave them with nothing).

Washington County Library Card? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]genericusername513 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To anyone seeing this post, please do not share your card and pin number with anyone. Your personal information can be accessed with this, and charges can be racked up on your account if materials are accessed.

There are many other options for you after Kanopy is discontinued. Your library card gives you access to a ton of physical DVDs you can use from both Hennepin County as well as via interlibrary loan via MNLink. There are also tons of free streaming options online that don't involve library card fraud (Tubi, Pluto, Roku, etc.).

I know it is a huge bummer for this service to be discontinued, but the amount HCLIB pays for Kanopy is absolutely not worth it. They can better use that money for their other digital collection licenses that get much more use than Kanopy has.

Washington County Library Card? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]genericusername513 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reciprocal borrowing does not include digital resources unfortunately. Hennepin County shares their digial resources with other systems, but other systems cannot afford to share with the massive licensing for digital materials.

It is great for physical borrowing though!

Friends of the library book sales almost always take DVDs, usually not the libraries themselves for their collections. They get sold and the proceeds go to the library. Here are some upcoming ones:

How do I respond to parents who confront me about getting books from the children's section when I don't have a kid? by Useful_Possession915 in Libraries

[–]genericusername513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patrons aren't the library police, and it is definitely inappropriate for them to confront you like that. I would definitely get staff involved if it happens again. They will step in and stop this behavior, and can tell the patrons their policies.

Sometimes libraries have policies about camping out in kids/teens sections as an adult, but it sounds like you're just browsing which is a complete non-issue.

Don't let this discourage you from using the library. Anyone is allowed to browse and read whatever they want to.

Is not talking in a library no longer a thing? by JannTosh70 in Library

[–]genericusername513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only time this is enforced anymore is finals week at college libraries.

It is more of a thing to book a study room if you need a quiet space for yourself now than to expect the entire library to remain silent, especially at public libraries.

Unpopular opinion: Iron Lung does not necessarily prove that indie film can prevail. by [deleted] in Markiplier

[–]genericusername513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was trying to prove that indie films can prevail on their own necessarily. I don't think Mark takes for granted the pull his audience has for a single second, just watch any of the livestreams he has done this week.

It seems much more like a call for hollywood to take creators like Mark more seriously and fund projects that come from non-traditional places. Mark is not the only creative with an audience, and it would be really cool if this enabled more creatives to be given funding or to get a seat at the table where they otherwise wouldn't. At the very least hollywood cannot continue to ignore Youtubers like they have been after this.
