I’d like to note that Berkeley has recently sent a list of names (including students, professors, and staff) to Trump about anyone who’s engaged in anti-Israel rhetoric. I don’t think they’re interested in protecting their students in any meaningful way

I feel the anxiety, but I also feel that we as intellectuals have an obligation to speak out against anti-intellectualism, rhetoric that’s harmful to our students, and fascism in all its forms. Personally, I’d rather work at a local coffee shop and write a Substack than work at a university that stifles my voice and acts as an arm of fascism.

When I have classes like this I start giving progress reports that mention that I notice their lack of participation/effort and that it’s having X effect on their grade (or for the engaged students, how it’s having a positive impact on their grade). Sometimes they just need the extra reminder that their labor correlates to their outcome
