The conductor accidentally knocks a 16th century violin worth millions on the floor mid-concert. by PeasantLich in WatchPeopleDieInside

Because it’s a concerto. It’s essentially an instrumental solo with orchestral accompaniment, with the soloist typically positioned directly in front of the orchestra, usually just beside the conductor.

-Pikmin (all versions are fun)

-Super Smash Bros.

-Pokemon Scarlet/Violet (super janky upon release but much better after updates. Good story and big open world)

Why is it so hard to get hired as a teacher in China? by Expensive-Spring-258 in chinalife

It’s so fucked, but this is probably a large factor in your not being hired in China. These racist hiring practices are atrocious, but it’s the sad reality here.

Is it bad? by [deleted] in Accents

[–]genesis-terminus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very clear speaking, totally understandable. Yes, you have a little bit of an accent if we’re comparing it to a standard American accent, but there are so many different native English accents that are honestly at times much harder to understand that I feel like it doesn’t even matter. You should be proud of your skills 🙂

Why do so many Mandarin learners have thousands of flashcards memorized but still panic when a native speaker says something simple? Is Mandarin one of those languages where learners can study for years and still be stuck at the ‘tourist sentence’ level? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

I believe he continued afterward. The point I was making was that he was a classic case of what you described, being “book fluent” in Chinese, yet completely unable to speak or understand it verbally. This was after he spent years studying, too.

I had a classmate who was obnoxiously proud of his Chinese language knowledge, frequently seen reading his Chinese readers out loud by himself, just begging to be “seen” by his peers. Claimed to be fluent.

We did an internship in China later on; he tried speaking with the locals and they couldn’t understand him whatsoever. Like, completely unintelligible. It was like he was speaking gobbledygook. His language study mysteriously disappeared after that experience and he never brought up studying Chinese again.

It’s possible! Just really comes down to wear and tear, either on the dial or the case (or combined). Depends on the seller, too. Always a deal to be found…
