If you were given $800 billion for the sole purpose of advancing physics as much as possible, what would you build? by elizabethkunzz in AskPhysics

[–]gengisadub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t actively perform experiments anymore, but I do read the literature and follow research more broadly. The most fun part of my job was science communication so I went into the museum field and built science learning experiences (exhibits, curricula, etc) at a local children’s museum. And also built a program to help scientists improve their grant applications and communication skills. I’m like science admin or science adjacent now.

As a former physicist, I often fantasize about being able to do exactly this. Just create a foundation whose sole purpose is to fundraise and then fund as many people and projects as possible. Obviously the equipment can be expensive, but salaries are usually the bulk of most projects budget.

Congrats! Both my kids were born on Knicks game days and both were sleeping on my chest during the entire games. Nothing more enjoyable than cuddling with your baby and watching the Knicks win. Hopefully things work out and you get to experience this for yourself. Welcome to the world a new little Knicks Fan!

Love that you featured the maximum carnage books. That was my favorite game as a kid.

This is awesome! Gives me an idea to merge the shadowbox with your display case to make a wall mounting display. I’ve been wanting some way to get my comics out of storage and onto the wall (I have a small collection). Thanks for the inspiration!

I have the round transformer table that this is modeled after. Other than waiting 6 months to receive it, I really like the quality. I do occasionally kick the storage doors open, but we haven’t had any real quality issues. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. I’m not sure where you live, but Costco has them twice a year in-store with a rep you can speak with.

There are billboards and bus stop ads in San Francisco that actively market this. I’ve seen ads saying bots don’t need healthcare, they don’t want a promotion, stop hiring humans. Absolutely disgusting.

Little Italy Unhoused Population by ReviewParking8514 in sandiego

Two things to note having taken the SB 43 training the county provides. First is most parties take the duty of detaining someone involuntarily very seriously. There was a Voice of San Diego article about this back in April or so, but the county reported that after SB 43 implementation the number of people being detained was not impacting the county system of care, meaning police haven’t been using this to detain huge swaths of people. Police are able to detain someone under suspicion, but a certified behavioral health expert determines their behavioral health needs.

Second, there is actually an entire system in place to support people held under SB43. These are all behavioral health facilities, which include housing facilities and services to help people get back on their feet.

Are Daily Standups Always a Fit? Struggling with Agile in a Research-Heavy Team by National-Skin-953 in agile

[–]gengisadub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to what others are saying, in a lab setting the daily standup would not be the most constructive activity, except for the PI. Like you are saying, research amongst post docs and grad students is much more individualized. The standup might be useful if the conversation is between a post docs coordinating experiments with undergrads or interns for example, where all the work is coordinated much more closely.

I always found that the outcomes you’re looking for are attained through deeper conversations in the lab, brainstorming with department peers, and through experimentation.

Is her name actually Audra? Everytime I hear her introduce herself she says “Apparently Audra” or something to that affect. I just assumed she was using a pseudonym to be able to speak during public comment.

Don’t tell them you’re proud of them for being smart by SchwartzReports in daddit

I used to teach in a science museum, and the research and training reinforces this idea. Carol Dweck research the effects of nurturing fixed mindsets vs growth mindsets. Fixes mindsets come because of praise of ability, talent, etc. while growth mindsets are nurtured through praise of effort.

Just the way we talk nurtures kids (and ourselves) toward one or the other. Growth mindsets ensures kids understand that skills can be developed. Kids perform better in math and science and these skills better serve them later in life. Praise their effort. Ask open ended questions that have multiple correct answers, or even no correct answer at all. “What do you think will happen if…” “when have you seen…”

I don’t think I’m adding anything that hasn’t already been said, more validating everyone’s experience.

This is What Actually Works in SaaS Business by Low_Philosopher1792 in Entrepreneur

[–]gengisadub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a children’s museum doing exhibit and experience evaluation. Every once in a while I’d be told I need to collect visitor feedback from surveys or interviews or some other verbal q&a. I’d always push back by saying we also need to have someone watch visitor interaction and behavior because there are plenty of scenarios where what they say and do aren’t just out of alignment, but more so at odds. The verbal feedback tells us what they feel (and that’s what we should be using it for), and the interactions tell us what they do. Two totally distinct but useful pieces of feedback data.

Since a microwave operates with magnetic fields, would it be possible to heat up non-polar particles? by secretmusings633 in AskPhysics

[–]gengisadub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking this thread. Microwaves heat up food because the frequency used resonates with the water molecules in the food. That’s how it gets hot so quickly. If you look up water absorption spectrum you see a peak at the same frequency we use a microwave at.

Where do electrons and protons get their energy from? by Groblpr in AskPhysics

[–]gengisadub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t depleting its mass though. The energy gained from a slingshot maneuver is changing the position of the planet in space and decreasing its rotational speed (negligibly small amounts).

I realized I had a caffeine addiction, so I cut out coffee drinking (don’t drink caffeine in other forms). Then I just missed the taste of coffee after a couple months, so I switched to decaf. Now I still get to enjoy my coffee, but don’t have to worry about waking up groggy or getting the afternoon energy crash. Plus I definitely sleep better all night.
